The official travels of Ottoman Sultans within or outside the Ottoman territory have been studied separately and in a descriptive framework in the current historiography. This work puts particular emphasis on the two travels of Sultan Abdulaziz, one in Egypt and the other in Europe while comparing their logics of displacements with those accomplished by his predecessors. This comparative approach allows us to depict the existing relationship between the rhetorics of nineteenth-century reforms and the practices of official travels in the Ottoman context of westernization. This study somehow shows the extent to which the displacements of Sultan Abdulaziz mark a certain continuity with those of former Sultans for having consolidated the spirit of reforms within the Ottoman population in the Tanzimat period. These travels, however, mark a new era in terms of their logistics and the distance of the trajectories.
