Antonio Gargiullo was born in the south of Italy and settled in Rome where he became admired for his genre scenes, many of which were Orientalist in nature. Like his contemporaries and the world around him, who were so mystified and engrossed in the Islamic culture of the Middle East, he had no trouble finding accessories and costumes to re-create these scenes in Rome. Inspiration came from Guiseppe Signorini's Oriental-themed masquerade ball in 1881, the influx of Tunisians visiting Rome, the Persian rugs imported from abroad, and the numerous Islamic objects used as barter in this metropolitan city.
