Gale began painting in the Pre-Raphaelite manner, but after travelling to the Middle East in 1862 and again in 1867 he settled into the Arab and Moorish subjects that dominated his work for the remainder of his life. This picture, painted on paper, was probably done on the spot during one of those trips, and was probably exhibited towards the end of his career in 1887 at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts as Interior, Algiers.
