The Right Eyes: Curating a Theology of Modernist Painting By Daniel A Siedell

This is not a child scrawling on a wall. This is a tradition; it is a religion, Asher Lev. You are entering a religion called painting.-Chaim Potok, My Name is Asher Lev 1 Modern art was driven by a particular kind of faith. It was an aggressive faith, a risky faith, which could, at any time, become doubt. In addition, it seemed to be a faith that required doubt. Such theological language might seem surprising since modern artistic practice has had an ambivalent relation to religion, especially the Christian Church. But modern artistic practices developed an apparatus that might best be described as a secular theology, with creeds, doctrines, hagiographies, rituals, confessions, and, yes, a kind of faith. Sociologist Sarah Thornton, writes 'contemporary art has become a kind of alternative religion for atheists' adding that it 'demands leaps of faith, but…rewards the believer with a sense of consequence. 2 This kind of religious behavior that Thornton observed is in part a remnant of a 'theology' that drove modernist painting for nearly a century, from its emergence in Paris in the 1880s through the 1960s, a theology that had at its core a kind of 'faith' that has often either been overlooked completely by theorists, art historians, and critics, or popularized into an 'art as religion' discourse that has flowed through the visual arts since the early nineteenth century. 3 The development of this peculiar concept of faith coincided with and coalesced around the critical reception of the work and life of Paul Cézanne. 4 I suggest that the contours of this faith become apparent when juxtaposed with an early modern theological concept that transformed not only religion, but politics and culture in Europe and the US: Luther's concept of justification sola fide. 5

Religion and the Historical Imagination: Esoteric Tradition as Poetic Invention (2017) By Wouter J. Hanegraaff

More specifically, attention is focused here on the importance of the historical imagination as an object of research (as distinct from its importance as af actor in research) and its relation to strict historicity.T he dynamics of the historical imagination can be analyzedi nt erms of ad ouble polarity:f actualityv ersus non-factuality and poeticity versus non-poeticity.H istorical narrativesw ith a highd egree of poeticity tend to be remembereda nd have an impact on readers even if they are factuallyinaccurate, while narrativeswith alow degree of poet-icity tend to be disregarded or forgotten even if they are factuallya ccurate. Against this background, four influential historical 'grand narratives' are analyzed: (1) the Renaissance and predominantlyCatholic story of 'ancient wisdom' through the ages; (2)its negative counterpart inspired by Protestant polemics, referred to as the story of 'pagan error' through the ages; (3) the Enlightenment story of progress through rational 'Enlightenment';a nd (4) its counterpart more congenialt oR omantic sentiments, the story of ap rogressive 'education of Humanity.' Such imaginative narrativesh aveas trongi mpact because they are able to engagethe emotions, and hence we need to analyze how specific nar-rativesafford specific economies of emotionality. Because religious grand narra-tivesare the reflection of highlyeclectic types of historiography, they need to be countered by an anti-eclectic historiographyt hat does not sacrifice factuality to poeticity.A nd yet, it is at least as important for historians to accept the task of tellingn ew 'true stories' about religion too:n arrativest hat engaget he imagination of their readersw ithout sacrificing nuance, complexity,a nd factual accuracy. ..

Religion and Art: A Tempestuous Affair By TARA MC KEON

https://www.academia.edu/8985114/Religion_and_Art_A_Tempestuous_Affair?nav_from=fb784a2b-8f61-4e56-820e-05ddfca8a954 This thesis explores the resurgence of religion within contemporary art, contextualizing it against the backdrop of secularization, particularly following the events of 9/11. It argues that the return to religion in art challenges the notion of a purely secularized society and highlights the malleability of religious structures as they permeate various aspects of contemporary life, including politics and culture. By employing the theories of Hegel and Nietzsche, and engaging with contemporary theorists like Terry Eagleton and Slavoj Žižek, the thesis aims to illuminate the complex relationship between religion and art, demonstrating that despite secularization's efforts, religion continues to influence contemporary society in multifaceted ways.

Religion, Paradoxes, and the Absurd By Carole Cusack

https://www.academia.edu/143702753/Religion_Paradoxes_and_the_Absurd?email_work_card=title The Enlightenment downgraded the paradoxical as it violated principles of logic. This was partly because (Christian) theology was viewed by secular rationalists as the paradoxical/ irrationalist discourse par excellence. Very little work on religion and paradox, or the broader category of the absurd, exists and it usually addresses historical sources in the world religions, especially Christianity and Buddhism. Yet paradox and absurdity flourish in the production of art (visual, literary, and performative). I have argued that religion and art are more closely connected than is usually accepted; invented religions are also evidence of art-making and are meaningful because they value creativity, paradox, and play. They may also be absurd, but this is not the insulting criticism that those accustomed to "traditional" religions imagine. It may even be a strength of this relatively new religious form.

https://www.academia.edu/40867029/Review_Thurgood_Graham_and_Randy_LaPolla_eds_The_Sino_Tibetan_Languages_Second_Edition_London_and_New_York_Routledge_2017_xxx_1018_pp_ISBN_978_1_138_78332_4_price_300_GBP?nav_from=67077b52-1f7d-434b-94ae-6f5dd0febc13 It has been fourteen years since the appearance of the first edition of this compendium of Trans-Himalayan languages. In its second edition, the volume has swollen to encompass 53 chapters. As Simon and Hill (2015: 381) noted, the language family "is known by names including 'Tibeto-Burman', 'Sino-Tibetan' and 'Trans-Himalayan', of which the last is the most neutral and accurate". McColl et al. (2018: 362) put it more succinctly in their Science article, stating simply: "Trans-Himalayan (formerly Sino-Tibetan)". In the very title to this volume, the two editors, Graham Ward Thurgood and Randy John LaPolla, loudly proclaim their adherence to the obsolete and empirically unsupported "Sino-Tibetan" phylogeny, but many of the contributors to this Routledge volume do not themselves subscribe to the same antiquated Indo-Chinese understanding of the language family. Outside of this volume, a good number of the contributing scholars openly abjure this family tree model. Later, we shall examine how the outspoken bias of the two editors pervades the volume in a thorough and more insidious manner than in the first edition. The anthology comprises 44 grammatical sketches, two of which are devoted to dead Trans-Himalayan languages, five survey articles, two editorial pieces, a piece on the Chinese writing system and a discussion of word order. Editorial misrepresentations, the state of the art and Gerber's Law This volume contains many valuable, some truly wonderful and a few problematic instalments, but the Routledge compendium is truly marred by the two editorial pieces authored by Thurgood and LaPolla and positioned at the very beginning of the book. In addition to the two large editorial pieces, the first section also contains a brief study of word order in Trans-Himalayan languages by Matthew Synge Dryer. A volume that purports to present a general overview of the field should dispassionately present different positions held by specialists in that field, and the failure even just once to mention that alternative views exist that are quite at variance with Thurgood and LaPolla's own particular view characterises an unfair comportment on the part of the two editors that is not just unsportsmanlike, but unscholarly and unworthy of our field. For well over a century, the phylogeny of the language family has been a matter of considerable controversy. Yet both editors are careful to cite and quote only such sources as happen to agree with their own model. The empirically unsupported Indo-Chinese taxonomy relentlessly propounded by an ever dwindling number of "true believer" Sino-Tibetanists permeates the very arrangement of the book, and the two editors have even wilfully skewed the contents of the volume in order to fit their obsolete Indo-Chinese family tree. In keeping with this "Sino-Tibetan" conceit, the editors have included six instalments on Sinitic, though the sheer brevity of Dah-an Ho's instalment on Mandarin could reflect a reluctance on the part of its contributor to indulge the paradigm championed by the two editors. Indeed, as already noted, many of the scholars who have contributed to this volume reject the language family tree model touted by the editors. Moreover, the editorial twosome surreptitiously sneak their own "Rung" subgroup into the table of contents, thereby falsely suggesting that this fiction represents a valid taxon within the family. To exacerbate matters, their table of contents incompetently groups Tshangla and Newar as "Bodish" languages.

Tibetan Linguistic Terminology on the Base of the Tibetan Traditional Grammar Treatises Corpus By Pavel Grokhovskiy, Maria Smirnova, Victor Zakharov, and Maria Khokhlova

For this purpose Tibetan grammatical works corpus was created. At the same time Russian translations of the works were added to the corpus, so it is factually a parallel Tibetan-Russian corpus. The corpus represents the collection of grammar treatises of the Tibetan grammatical tradition formed in VII-VIII c. The corpus is useful to researchers of the Tibetan linguistic tradition as well as to those specialized in linguistic studies of classical and modern Tibetan and its teaching. On the basis of corpus a specific grammatical lexical database is created. The database will be useful both to tibetologists and general linguistics specialists.

Nominalization in Tibeto-Burman languages of the Himalayan area By Carol Genetti

https://www.academia.edu/1334194/Nominalization_in_Tibeto_Burman_languages_of_the_Himalayan_area?nav_from=2dff30c4-5de7-4df7-90d9-b726abe26e60 Tibeto-Burman languages exhibit an interesting composite of behavior in nominalized structures. In particular, these languages make extensive use of clausal nominalization (found in attributive phrases, complementation, relative clauses, and independent utterances), as well as derivational nominalization. This paper describes the syntactic and functional dimensions of nominalization in five distantly-related Tibeto-Burman languages of the Himalayan area. It demonstrates that the same affixes are used to derive lexical nouns and lexical adjectives and that this bifunctionality is a natural consequence of clausal nominalization. While clausal and derivational nominalizations are distinct structures synchronically, each can give rise to the other. The center of these historical developments is relativization, which instantiates clausal syntax but is ultimately a referential device.

Between nature and culture. From Italy and the Netherlands new perspectives towards a sustainable use of historical landscapes By Federica Marulo

Although preserving such values means dealing with their conflicting trends, finding a balance is, however, a fundamental issue, so that the heritage field can contribute to the global challenge of sustainable development. In relation to this, the Italian and Dutch experiences with the revitalization of military structures represent an interesting observatory in Western Europe, in which the dialectics between cultural and ecological values has been variously addressed according to their different appreciation. Considering this conceptual premise, the paper investigates some recent revitalization projects involving the forts of the Entrenched Field of Mestre (IT) and the New Dutch Waterline (NL), two 19th-century military landscapes embedded in the hydraulic setting of their area of influence. Linking documentary research, interviews and field observations, it highlights the role that an integrated approach to cultural and natural values can play in the promotion of a sustainable use of historical landscapes.

Relationship with place: a transformative and sustainable pedagogy for the planet Julie Singleton* [1]

https://www.academia.edu/2997-6006/1/1/10.20935/AcadEnvSci7269 The central hypothesis of this conceptual commentary is that place-based educational approaches that use local environments as the learning context could not only provide needed educational reforms but also sow the seeds of sustainable behaviors of future generations. Furthermore, natural environments are offered as an optimal context for the emotional and sensory-rich needs of learning experiences that transform eco-paradigms and develop land ethics. The supporting literature examines the nexus of environmental education, place-based approaches, benefits of nature experience, and transformational learning. Breaking barriers of current economic, political, and educational institutions requires integrative approaches—head, hand, and heart—to transform eco-paradigms. A conceptual diagram is offered to visualize this holistic approach. The rich context of a natural place enhances the esthetic quality of a learning experience and is dependent on the relationships within the community of learners, sensory interaction with the learning context or place, the emotion that arouses, thoughts derived from reflection on the experience, and the depth of engagement and behavior change that ensues. I support the power of place as a learning context through personal narrative. Although place-based education can be applied in any community and educational setting, I offer my own cultural perspective as an American with a critique of the consumer culture of the place in which I reside and the effect of rigid institutions on eco-values. Place-based educational reforms could develop caring for local environments leading to young people striving to preserve the places in which they have learned and come to care about.

Göttler and Mochizuki, eds., Landscape and Earth in Early Modernity: Picturing Unruly Nature, 2023 By Mia Mochizuki

Landscape emerged as a site of artistic exploration at a time when environments and ecologies were reshaped and transformed. This volume historicizes the contingency of an ever-changing elemental world, reframing and reimagining landscape as a mediating space in the interplay between the natural and the artificial, the real and the imaginary, the internal and the external. The lens of the “unruly” reveals the latent landscapes that undergirded their conception, the elemental resources that resurfaced from the bowels of the earth, the staged topographies that unsettled the boundaries between nature and technology, and the fragile ecologies that undermined the status quo of human environs. Landscape and Earth in Early Modernity: Picturing Unruly Nature argues for an art history attentive to the vicissitudes of circumstance and attributes the regrounding of representation during a transitional age to the unquiet landscape.

The political mobilization of nature in seventeenth-century French formal gardens By Chandra Mukerji

https://www.academia.edu/3584766/The_political_mobilization_of_nature_in_seventeenth_century_French_formal_gardens?nav_from=b6be76ff-4e04-4cff-84f3-44e1aed6938e The paper explores the transformation of natural landscapes into symbols of state power during Louis XIV's reign in seventeenth-century France, particularly through the lens of formal gardens like Versailles. It argues that these gardens were not merely aesthetic achievements but crucial elements of a material culture that embodied political control, displayed military power, and manipulated nature to serve the monarchy's strategic objectives. The research highlights the interplay between architecture, military engineering, and landscape design, providing insights into the ways in which nature was politically mobilized as a tool of authority.

To showcase the improvement of biodiversity and the socio-ecological synergies that PF2050 facilitates, this article describes the work done in Wellington City, specifically in Miramar suburb, by different organizations and community groups. Thanks to the predator suppression work done in Miramar, local stewards have been working with the Landscape Architecture program of Te Herenga Waka/Victoria University of Wellington to design the restoration of Mātai Moana/Mt. Crawford and create an unfenced urban ecosanctuary and heritage reserve. The applied methodology showcases how collaborative landscape design can maximize the ecological impact of restoration projects while facilitating community engagement with biodiversity. This case study also highlights the importance of complementing biological invasion management with community-led restoration projects. It reveals how stewardship, collaboration, and education can become drivers to the recovery of biodiversity in urban environments.

Medieval Political Ecologies and Eco-Nationalists: What If Nature Is Cultural? By Antonella Sciancalepore

In the late-medieval French romance Perceforest, in particular, we observe a vision of nature that can serve a message of political and cultural conquest. In thi

Presentation “There’s so much we can still learn from the ancients about nature,” argues Serenella Iovino (In: Schliephake: 2017, p. 315). The objective of the III Medieval Art Research Meeting: Cosmovisions: Medieval Heritage and the Contemporary Ecocritical Debate is to contribute to contemporary environmental discussions from the perspective of medieval studies. We are, indeed, living through a clear ecological crisis, an Anthropocene characterized by the strong negative impact of humans on the cosmos and the earth in particular. In an article titled “Revealing Roots,” Iovino proposes that it would be crucial to incorporate “ancient cultures into the contemporary debate on environmental humanities” (op. cit.). Following the Italian researcher’s judgment, we believe that the ecological visions contained in medieval texts and images can be brought to the fore and interact with contemporary environmental concerns. Indeed, this reading allows us to uncover the “historical ecologies” that the Middle Ages, with all its richness, contains. This would also be an anachronistic reading that examines the modernity of the medieval era. Our goal is to reveal the ecological visions expressed in medieval images and texts and illustrate the discursive constructions of the relationships and boundaries between humans, non-humans, and nature that both images and texts propose and incorporate. What are the images and thoughts that shaped the “ecological visions” of medieval artists? From this anthropocentric or ecocentric perspective that informs the general views of nature in the Middle Ages, papers will be accepted on the following themes: 1. Nature as an environmental dimension in its strategies of representation. 2. Medieval cultural and intertextual forms that bring new ideas about Nature, especially in their contemporary and ecocritical approach. 3. The relationships of humans with “others than humans” (animals and plants); 4. What specific "Weltanschauung" during the Middle Ages, in the form of texts and images, helps to clarify the poetic decline of ecological visions. 5. The connection between culture and the physical world in the medieval scope. 6. The study of natural phenomena and the privileged place for “otium”. 7. Animals, plants, monsters, natural harmony, and environmental adversities in texts and images as a metaphor for life. Communication languages: Portuguese, Spanish, and English.

A zempléni csésze Kelet és Nyugat között - The Zemplín Cup between East and West, 2024 By Tivadar Vida

https://www.academia.edu/143685931/A_zempl%C3%A9ni_cs%C3%A9sze_Kelet_%C3%A9s_Nyugat_k%C3%B6z%C3%B6tt_The_Zempl%C3%ADn_Cup_between_East_and_West_2024 The study assumes that the distinctive shape of the Zemplín Cup (SK), which dates from the Hungarian Conquest period, is not unconnected to developments in toreutics (artistic metalworking) in the 9th and 10th centuries. The study investigates analogies across a wide geographical area and from multiple cultures, attempting to interpret these in the context of links between Europe, Eurasia, and the Mediterranean world, namely between East and West. As regards shape, the cup matches others from the period, meaning that the craftsman who made it must have been familiar with the legacy of forms on which it draws. He may have become acquainted with this legacy partly by way of artefacts that mediated it to him, yet the techniques used to make the cup are not indicative of Central Asian, East European, Byzantine, or Carolingian workshops. This artefact is the work of a local goldsmith which was ordered by the conquering Hungarian elite. The Zemplín Cup is a distinctive product of Hungarian toreutics during the Conquest period, but the artist who fashioned it was certainly familiar with metalworking traditions in the East and West at this time. In the case of the Zemplín Cup, Avar-period, West European, and Carolingian-era antecedents ‒ possibly Pannonian ones ‒ are presented (in addition to the Eastern parallels taken into account hitherto) that a master-craftsman creating in the Carpathian Basin already was able to build on.

Baroque Commons: Visions of Natural Sovereignty in Global Crisis By Fabien Montcher

https://www.academia.edu/143686771/Baroque_Commons_Visions_of_Natural_Sovereignty_in_Global_Crisis?email_work_card=title This paper explores the concept of baroque commons—idealized visual representations of nature created by elite families in early modern Europe amid environmental disruption, confessional unrest, and global crisis. Due to fears of natural chaos and social instability, dynastic powers turned to theatrical images of harmonious landscapes, gardens, and symbolic maps to assert control over both real and imagined spaces. These representations not only legitimized territorial expansion and bonded labor but also reframed nature as a manageable and sovereign domain. Focusing on transregional 17th-century campaigns of families such as the Farnese and Borghese, this study examines how baroque commons served as tools of environmental imperialism and dynastic self-promotion, offering new insight into the entangled politics of nature, image-making, and power during a global age of crisis. In this article, Prince Ottavio Farnese’s dissertation served as a key text in promoting baroque commons, using visual and textual strategies to advance dynastic claims and assert control over nature amid environmental and political upheaval.

Analyse de baumes issus de tête momifiée (Thèbes) By Annie Perraud and Catherine Vieillescazes

The cumulation of accumulation: Theses and research agenda for 5000 years of world system history By Barry K Gills

https://www.academia.edu/73813701/The_cumulation_of_accumulation_Theses_and_research_agenda_for_5000_years_of_world_system_history?nav_from=6eb02971-8c45-40b7-81b3-fe22261ed9c2 This essay argues that the world system began its development 5,000 years ago, rather than 500. Capital accumulation has been the motor/driving force of the world system's development since its beginning. We define the extent or bounding of the world system by reference to a systematic network of transfer of economic surplus among (political) regions, which links their "domestic systems" of exploitation and accumulation into an over-arching system of inter-penetrating and competitive super-accumulation. On these criteria, the world system developed from its origins in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Indus, into the "Asio-Afro-European ecumene" and incorporated the Western hemisphere after A.D 1500. Throughout its historical development, logistic inter-linkages among regions have been extremely important to world system extension and to the shifting pattern of power and accumulation. We examine the particularly crucial role of three logistical corridors through the "Middle East" which link the circum-Mediterranean world to Asia. We also posit the centrality of Central Asia to the development of the world system. The essay explores cycles and trends characterizing the development of the entire world system. Among these are its cycles of infrastructural investment and technological innovation. These cycles are also related to competitive economic and military conflict patterns. Calculating Byzantium? Social Network Analysis and Complexity Sciences as tools for the exploration of medieval social dynamics. By Johannes Preiser-Kapeller

https://www.academia.edu/512048/Calculating_Byzantium_Social_Network_Analysis_and_Complexity_Sciences_as_tools_for_the_exploration_of_medieval_social_dynamics The exploration of medieval social dynamics, particularly in Byzantium, necessitates innovative methodologies due to limitations in available statistical data. The integration of social network analysis and complexity sciences offers potential pathways to enhance understanding of historical societal developments. By scrutinizing various models and their applicability to Byzantine society, this research seeks to illustrate the complexities and dynamics underlying social interactions and political structures of the era.

This crisis took hold in all regions, ranging from China in the East to England in the West.

Argentina. grisparera@gmail.com 2 "Lectures on Government and Binding" (CHOMSKY, 1981), "La nueva sintaxis.

https://www.academia.edu/2997-6006/2/3/10.20935/AcadEnvSci7825 This study presents a structured synthesis of 86 references on community-based conservation (CBC), with a focus on the Lower Guinea Forest Ecosystem (LGFE). Through a dual analytical framework—comprising three core pillars (successful case studies, strategies from practical experience, and obstacles/improvements) and four thematic categories (Participation and Governance, Livelihoods, Institutional Gaps, and Empowerment)—the study identifies recurring patterns, lessons, and constraints in CBC implementation. The findings affirm that CBC can effectively align biodiversity protection with local development goals when enabling conditions—such as secure tenure, inclusive governance, and cultural legitimacy—are in place. However, institutional weaknesses, power asymmetries, and inadequate long-term financing continue to undermine its effectiveness. The study concludes that CBC must be treated not as a fixed model, but as an adaptive, negotiated process that requires sustained local engagement, policy support, and structural reform to deliver equitable and durable conservation outcomes.

Tomb walls were often elaborately painted and inscribed with scenes and objects deemed desirable for the afterlife. Votive objects, furniture, clothing, jewelry, and importantly, food including bread, cereals, fruit, jars of wine, beer, oil, meat, and poultry were included in the burial goods. An intriguing feature of the meat and poultry produced for the deceased from the highest levels of Egyptian society was that they were mummified to ensure their preservation. However, little is known about the way they were prepared, such as whether balms were used, and if they were used, how they compared with those applied to human and animal mummies? We present herein the results of lipid biomarker and stable carbon isotope investigations of tissues, bandaging, and organic balms associated with a variety of meat mummies that reveal that treatments ranged from simple desiccation and wrapping in bandages to, in the case of the tomb of Yuya and Tjuia (18th Dynasty, 1386-1349 BC), a balm associated with a beef rib mummy containing a high abundance of Pistacia resin and, thus, more sophisticated than the balms found on many contemporaneous human mummies.

GC/MS studies allowed the elucidation of a great number of clearly separated compounds found in the ancient embalming material. Phenols, guaiacols, naphthalenes, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenoids, oxidised diterpene resin acids and triterpenoids were noticed. These results and particularly the detection of an unused embalming material shed some new light on the possible way as to how the different embalming materials might have been prepared and applied. It was striking to see the accordance of the present data with the well-known treatises by Herodotus (490-425 B. C.) and by Pliny the Elder (23/24-79 A. C.). The impact of the historical observations on modern science and in return the dramatic promotion of ancient texts stimulated by the present study is intrigui...

Peer Reviewed: Embalming In The Old Kingdom Of Pharaonic Egypt By Ursula Baumer

Our knowledge of conservation techniques used in the Old Kingdom is limited. In general, mummification was accomplished after dehydrating the body. To improve this mummification process, embalming was progressively used from the time of the Middle Kingdom onward. In an earlier study from the Tubingen laboratory, mummified alkaline phosphatase was successfully isolated from bone samples obtained from a Ptolemaic mummy (1). This mummy had been richly pretreated with phenolic and fungicidal compounds, which suppressed secondary microbial growth. We were very interested in ascertaining the limitations of preserving this zinc-magnesium enzyme in mummified Egyptian bone samples dating back to the Old Kingdom when no conservation, according to general knowledge, was assumed to have been done. Thus, we performed a study on the wellcharacterized, mummified skeleton of IDU II, secretary general of the pine wood trade office. This high-ranking official lived some 2200 years B.C. and was buried in a solid wood coffin. He was identified by the inscriptions on the outside of his thick, boarded coffin. The tomb of IDU II was unearthed in 1914 at Giza, and its contents were brought to the Pelizaeus Museum (Hildesheim, Germany) (http://mfah.org/ splendor/docs/highlts/hlldemus.html). The mummy (inventory No. 2639) con-Controversy exists over whether embalming was already being performed in the Old Kingdom in the course of mummifying the deceased.

Anthropological and analytical studies of two Egyptian human mummies’ heads from Deir-el-Medineh By Catherine Vieillescazes

These individuals come from the same necropolis, Deir el-Medineh in Upper Egypt. They were coated with particular substances not often encountered in studies of mummification balms. The objective was to identify the composition of the two types of samples found on each individual: an amorphous material resembling mummy balm and a sandy substance. The knowledge of the anthropology and the mummification practices associated to analytical chemistry study of the balms permitted to obtain a global characterization of these persons. The FTIR and GC-MS results notably permitted to observe (i) the presence of fat and beeswax within the amorphous black samples and (ii) the presence of natron, fatty matter and mastic resin within the sandy samples; this types of samplings are uncommon in ancient Egypt.

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), one of the most tragic and dramatic periods in the history of Spain, presents, in music, very open and attractive features in different ways. Despite the harshness of the situation, the limitations and cruelty that were experienced in the day-to-day in the front and the rear, music had a very important role at both sides. In this article we focus on the Central Council of Music, an agency created by the democratic republican government that directed the designs of the music in the Popular front. In 1937 the capital and different establishments related with it, were transferred from Madrid to Valencia because of the war. In the same year, in the month of June, and with this situation, the Council arose, continuing with the work made before by the National Board of Music. Despite the difficulties, the Central Council of Music tried to create new standards and give an answer to the problems of the previous period. In order to do it, the Council tried to organize Musical Missions, courses to train people in the front and the rear in music learning and create the National Concert Orchestra. The Council’s ideology had the aim of encourage musicological research and musical composition, edition of music and books, conducting concerts and festivals in different parts of the Spanish geography and the magazine publishing among many others activities. Particularly remarkable is the publication of a magazine called Música.

Abstract: This article analyzes the musical legacy of the Spanish Transition to democracy from a critical perspective. Musical criticism and Musicology have studied music as an autonomous aesthetic field, instead of a social praxis. Remarkably, the academic world has not paid much attention to the relationship between music and society. This article stresses out the space of conflict generated by musical experiences during that period of time and the strategies that have been applied over the past few decades in what we consider to be an attempt to erase it. Key Words: Spanish Transition to Democracy, music, society, social practice.

Geometry-driven modeling of electron localization in InAs/GaAs double quantum dots Igor Filikhin* [1] , Branislav Vlahovic [1] , Tanja Zatezalo [1] , Patrick Flanigan [1] , Jimmie Oxley [2]

https://www.academia.edu/3064-979X/2/3/10.20935/AcadQuant7862 The coupled electronic states in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) double quantum dot (DQD) systems are investigated using a phenomenological model applied to InAs/GaAs heterostructures. The single-band effective potential approach previously proposed by our group is employed to numerically calculate the energy spectrum and spatial localization of a single electron, serving as an indicator of the coupling strength within the binary system. For identical quantum dots (QDs) in a DQD, the electronic states exhibit ideal coherence. We systematically vary the DQD geometry and the strength of the confinement potential (via an applied electric field) to examine the effects of symmetry breaking and the sensitivity of electron localization in both identical and nearly identical DQDs. Our results show that coherence in DQDs is highly sensitive to these subtle variations. This sensitivity can be harnessed to detect changes in the surrounding environment, such as fluctuations in chemical or electrical properties that affect the DQD system.
