Ocurre lo mismo con Naturaleza muerta con pavos reales, en la que un pájaro yace en un charco de su propia sangre y el otro cuelga de sus patas. La impresión se multiplica con El buey sacrificado, donde vemos un animal muerto que cuelga de una viga de madera. Para Moser, no hay un Cristo en todo el Louvre que encarne la emoción del sacrificio como lo hace este cadáver, abierto en canal. Sin remitir a nada religioso, el cuadro «despierta la misma sensación espectral que nos suscitan los misterios más sagrados». Es más: «llegó a verse en términos tan positivos que sus obras incluso se oscurecieron artificialmente», pues los conservadores de sus cuadros decidieron a conciencia no renovar el barniz que protege las pinturas para no aclarar la obra. Por si fuera poco, hasta bien entrado el siglo XX, algunos restauradores añadieron pigmentos a fin de oscurecer los lienzos.

The papers largely concentrate on pictorial depictions of banqueting and/or food offerings and how they might be understood in such settings, although some papers consider tomb deposits and furnishings. The book reconstructs a case of witchcraft which took place in the seventeenth century, shortly after the Auto de Fe of Logroño (1610). The author takes us through the process of ‘construction’ of a witch as he positions himself with regard to the controversial and complex phenomenon of witchcraft. The region was extensively investigated by its first director of antiquities, Apostolos S. Arvanitopoulos (active 1905–1926), who conducted large-scale excavations (most of them still unpublished), opened a major museum, and published hundreds of inscriptions. Scattered among many academic institutions and until the late 1990s mostly inaccessible, Arvanitopoulos’s very rich archives are invaluable for recontextualizing archaeological finds but also constitute historical sources in their own right. The so-called ‘Grave Z’ at Demetrias will be used as a case study to showcase the potential and the challenges of Arvanitopoulos’s archives. There is a growing interest in re-naturalizing urban environments by increasing vegetation cover as a means to foster more resilient cities and enhance environmental comfort for urban dwellers. Numerous policy recommendations emphasize vague targets such as increasing urban biodiversity or expanding tree canopy cover. While these indicators are indeed relevant and contribute to ecosystem service provision, they remain insufficient as standalone goals, failing to account for the complexity of factors involved in the design and planning of green urban infrastructure. This article places particular emphasis on the role of trees as the core unit of green infrastructure. Other vegetative strata, such as herbaceous layers or vertical greening systems, are acknowledged but regarded as secondary or complementary to tree-based systems. We highlight the conceptual ambiguity surrounding terms like “biodiversity” or “canopy increase” and argue that these metrics, although widely used, must be subordinated to a more integrative and function-driven planning paradigm. Urban forestry strategies should not aim merely to boost biodiversity indices but rather to develop evidence-based planting proposals that consider plant functional traits, optimize ecosystem service delivery, minimize disservices, and ensure species selection aligns with future climate conditions. This also involves maximizing genetic diversity, conducting detailed assessments of below-ground conditions (soils), as well as canopy height and diameter class structures, to enhance resilience against pests and diseases. Furthermore, spatial distribution must be planned to ensure justice and equity across socioeconomic groups. Ultimately, fulfilling all these criteria is likely to result in more biodiverse urban forests, but this diversity will be the consequence of well-defined, objective, and scientifically grounded decisions, rather than an arbitrary increase in a metric whose optimal threshold remains undefined. The goal is not simply more biodiversity, but smarter, functionally informed biodiversity.

Surface and chemical effects on 199Hg spin polarization relaxation in optically pumped magnetometers Steven K. Lamoreaux* [1]

A serious problem that has not been resolved is the instability of the 199Hg spin relaxation rate in atomic vapor cells under irradiation with 254 nm Hg resonance light. In this paper, previously obtained data are re-analyzed or analyzed for the first time. The effects of impurities of H2 and O2 are elucidated, and possible ways to stabilize cells are discussed. The surface states originating from the van der Waals interaction of 199Hg with fused silica are analyzed and shown to be essential to understand relaxation mechanisms. A discussion of the possible use of a mixture of N2O and other gases is presented. This research article is different from most because it describes work using optically pumped 199Hg that has been conducted over the last 40 years, some of which was never published, and with only partial theoretical analysis. As such, a review article is not possible due to the limited specific literature to review. Typically, studies of cell wall-induced atomic polarization relaxation times, defined here as (with wall relaxation rate), were performed in the context of building an apparatus to measure some fundamental process of greater immediate interest; as typical in such work, tedious technical details are barely left as a footnote if presented at all.

Las novelas seleccionadas han sido Retrato de una bruja de Luis de Castresana; La herbolera de Toti Martínez de Lezea; Ars Magica de Nerea Riesco; Las maléficas de Mikel Azurmendi y Regreso a tu piel de Lus Gabás. En un trabajo en gran parte descriptivo, se presentarán estos cinco relatos, resaltando los aspectos más llamativos que tratan sobre la brujería y las tesis que se vierten sobre este fenómeno y sobre la caza de brujas. Por tanto, se facilita al lector una panorámica acerca de los textos que ahondan en esta temática y se muestra que, en la actualidad, sigue muy vigente el interés por estas prácticas y su persecución, debido a lo complejo y controvertido del asunto y al drama que se vivió en los siglos XV, XVI y XVII, y que estos escritores han querido reflejar. ...

The examples are taken from throughout the Hebrew Bible and therefore the context is antiquity, yet similar processes also determine the nature of maps from subsequent eras. Biblical maps display how spatial representation of the nation relies on intersecting mythic and political standards. My analysis of this dynamic is driven by the question of why there are two different maps of Israel's land. One set of maps spans from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Jordan River in the east and a second set reaches from the Sea to the River Euphrates. A conceptual stability results from the parallel of land spanning from river to sea, while conflicting notions of the state arise from their discrepancies. I argue that the seemingly paradoxical existence of two topographies illustrates how maps reconcile the idea of the nation with regnant mythic conceptions as well as how the nation borrows the means of self-presentation from empire. ...

The effectiveness of FLR is influenced by regional differences, socio-economic conditions, and the policy–practice gap. This study assesses key factors contributing to the success of FLR and its impact in the Congo–Nile Crest agro-ecological zone (CNC AEZ), a portion of the Congo basin in Rwanda. The research draws on 150 household surveys, 15 key informant interviews, and a review of 21 regulatory frameworks, including international agreements, global strategies, national laws, policies, and institutional frameworks. Findings from the survey indicate that 98% of farmers are aware of FLR initiatives and 90.6% participated in FLR projects, with 83.33% using both native and non-native species. Farmers reported a number of benefits from FLR, including improved climate resilience, income from agriculture and forest products, better infrastructure, and increased knowledge of sustainable practices. However, many farmers felt unsupported due to inconsistent seed availability and a lack of follow-up training. Challenges identified from both survey and regulatory framework analysis include a lack of strong financial mechanisms and monitoring system, limited resources, land use competition, soil erosion, illegal deforestation, market constraints, and low private sector involvement. Agroforestry emerged as a promising approach, enhancing restoration and food security at once. This study emphasizes the need for aligning policy frameworks with socio-economic realities. The findings from farmers, environmental practitioners, and policy documents highlight key recommendations, including community participation, quality seed provision, research, market accessibility, and cross-sectoral collaboration, as essential to FLR success. This study provides critical community-informed evidence to guide FLR policy refinement and implementation in CNC AEZ and other regions with similar socio-ecological contexts.

Podemos pensar en Pandora, cuya curiosidad supuso la perdición del género humano, o en Eva, la primera pecadora; por su culpa actualmente debemos trabajar y parir a los hijos con dolor. Ellas fueron las primeras, pero no las únicas, pues a lo largo de la Historia muchas mujeres han sido perseguidas y acusadas de provocar un grave daño al género humano… al menos, en opinión de sus verdugos. Una figura femenina que, todavía hoy, continúa asociándose con el terror y la maldad es la de la bruja, esa vieja fea y grotesca que viaja por los aires sobre una escoba, prepara peligrosas pócimas con extraños ingredientes en un caldero, y aterroriza a niños y niñas desde las páginas de los cuentos infantiles. El término "bruja", actualmente definido por la Real Academia Española de la Lengua como "mujer que, según la opinión vulgar, tiene pacto con el diablo y, por ello, poderes extraordinarios" o "mujer fea y vieja", no siempre ha tenido connotaciones tan negativas. De hecho, el indoeuropeo weik significaba "portadora de conocimiento" y el actual término inglés witch deriva de la raíz wicca, que designa a curanderas, hechiceras y parteras. Según Manuela Dunn Mascetti, las witch fueron los primeros médicos y "sólo con la aparición del patriarcado" dicho término "adquirió las connotaciones negativas que aún posee en la actualidad" (Dunn Mascetti, 1998: 63, nota a pie). En la Antigüedad clásica, se relacionaba a las brujas con el culto a Hécate, diosa de las plantas venenosas, que podían ser empleadas tanto para curar como para matar. Se trataba de una divinidad triple, que era representaba con tres cabezas (de serpiente, de caballo y de perro) o con tres cuerpos. En esa misma época, se creía en la existencia de mujeres que podían transformarse a sí mismas o a otras personas en animales, volar durante la noche y volverse incorpóreas para penetrar en los lugares más recónditos; además de fabricar hechizos o filtros amorosos, provocar enfermedades y catástrofes naturales. También se les atribuía la elaboración de venenos, así como de sustancias embellecedoras, y se acudía a ellas para que mediaran en asuntos amorosos. Dichas mujeres se reunían de noche para celebrar la "cena de Hécate", en la que compartían sus conocimientos de brujería y sus poderes mágicos, con la protección de la diosa. Diversos autores clásicos tratan el tema de la hechicería y la magia como algo natural y cotidiano. Teócrito nos narra cómo Simeta se vale de sus poderes para conseguir el amor de Delfis. Petronio, en El Satiricón, relata los conjuros de la bruja Enotea, así como el modo en que ésta lee el futuro. Apuleyo, en El asno de oro, introduce el personaje de Pánfila, que se convierte en lechuza con la ayuda de ungüentos mágicos que ella misma prepara. Esta bruja, demás de transformar a unos animales en otros, es capaz de convertir en tinieblas la luz del día. En Las metamorfosis de Ovidio aparece la bruja Medea, quien, además de realizar otros actos maravillosos, logra detener el envejecimiento. A otra famosa hechicera la encontramos en las páginas de La Odisea, de Homero. Circe habitaba en la isla de Ea, donde preparaba pociones mágicas a base de hierbas, cuyas propiedades probaba con los náufragos que llegaban a su costa. De hecho, en Grecia y Roma, este tipo de prácticas mágicas no estaban prohibidas ni condenadas, siempre que se utilizasen con un fin benéfico y diesen respuesta a una necesidad del pueblo. Sólo eran perseguidas si causaban algún daño, como sucedió en Roma en el año 331 a. C., cuando 170 hechiceras fueron condenadas por haber envenenado con sus pócimas a cientos de personas. Hasta el siglo III d. C., la muerte en la hoguera era la pena que correspondía a quien utilizase la magia o el encantamiento para terminar con la vida de sus víctimas. En el siglo IV, al imponerse el cristianismo, la hechicería comenzó a ser vista como una manifestación pagana y, más tarde, se la relacionó con el culto al diablo. La Iglesia empleó todos los medios de que disponía para erradicarla: sucesivamente, destruyó los templos paganos (S. IV); prohibió la adivinación y el empleo de amuletos (S. IV); castigó la práctica de la magia y la creencia en supersticiones (S. VI); y excomulgó a los astrólogos (S. VII). Las antiguas creencias paganas fueron objeto de reinterpretación y, de este modo, "la nueva religión, por vía de sus autoridades, procedió de modo parecido a como antes había procedido el Paganismo con las creencias cristianas: las alteró algo, para convertirlas mejor en pura representación del mal" (Caro Baroja, 2003: 73). ...

La literatura, al igual que otros soportes culturales, contribuye en el proceso de construcción, consolidación y transmisión de imaginarios de «otras» culturas que ayudan a la naturalización de estereotipos y prejuicios que se defienden como ver-dades incuestionables. En este caso, el orientalismo ha logrado que en el orden sim-bólico occidental sobre lo marroquí predomine su caracterización como violento. La narrativa española de tema marroquí refuerza esta idea hasta tal punto que con la excusa de " reflejar " la realidad de un país árabe-islámico, lo que consigue, performativamente, es instaurar esa realidad social en el imaginario generalizado. ABSTRACT: This article aims to analyze the violence of the Moroccan woman imagined in the Spanish fiction narrative written by women during the 20th century, but also the violence to which she is subjected. Literature, like other cultural media, contributes in the process of constructing, consolidating and transmitting imaginaries of " other " cultures that help the naturalization of stereotypes and prejudices that are defended as unquestionable truths. Las siguientes páginas repasarán sus imaginados modelos de conducta, el raudal de tópicos repetidos con los que se describe y los valores que se le asignan. Principalmente, se detendrá en sus perfiles más habituales: la curandera, la adivina y la casamentera. En cuanto a las fuentes primarias utilizadas, responden al conjunto de novelas y relatos de ficción escritos por mujeres españolas y que teniendo por tema central Marruecos fueron escritos durante el pasado siglo XX.
