NASA’s Chandra Breaks Down ‘Treble Clef’s’ Galaxy Cluster Collision

https://science.nasa.gov/missions/chandra/nasas-chandra-breaks-down-treble-clefs-galaxy-cluster-collision/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=nn202641 Astronomers have used NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory to break down the cause of a remarkable formation of radio waves they have nicknamed the “Treble Clef” because its distinct shape strongly resembles the musical symbol. The researchers discovered the Treble Clef is likely caused by an outburst from a supermassive black hole, followed by a collision of two galaxy clusters. A paper describing the findings, led by Andrea Botteon of the National Institute for Astrophysics, or INAF, in Italy, published Wednesday in the Astronomy & Astrophysics journal.

The mission aims to characterize Phobos and Deimos, determine their origins, and return a sample from Phobos to Earth. The MMX spacecraft is scheduled to launch from JAXA's Tanegashima Space Center in Japan at 3:41 p.m. EDT on Monday, Oct. 19.

NASA’s Perseverance Sets Off-World Record for Total Distance Driven

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover has driven farther than any vehicle ever has on the surface of another world. On Oct. 11, the rover’s odometer reached 28.10 miles, surpassing the record of 28.06 miles set by the agency’s Opportunity rover, which explored Mars from 2004 to 2018. Perseverance reached the milestone on the 2,006th Martian day, or sol, of its mission, covering in five and a half years a distance that took Opportunity nearly 15 years to travel. The achievement came as Perseverance traveled toward an area called Idubi through a region along the western rim of Jezero Crater known as “Lac de Charmes.” There, the rover is investigating what may be some of the oldest terrain ever explored in the solar system. The rocks and landscape in Lac de Charmes are so ancient that comparable formations on Earth have long since been erased by erosion and plate tectonics. The science team hopes that Idubi may preserve evidence of ancient hydrothermal systems. NASA recently approved the mission’s first extension, which began in October and will allow Perseverance to continue exploring the rim of Jezero Crater through 2028. https://science.nasa.gov/blogs/perseverance-mars-rover/2026/10/12/nasas-perseverance-sets-off-world-record-for-total-distance-driven/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=nn202641

How a new wave of science philanthropists can have the greatest impact Tech entrepreneurs are bringing an engineer’s eye to research funding. They must be open about their findings to reap maximum benefit.

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-03326-2 Some of the richest people in history are using charitable donations to explore fresh approaches to funding scientific research. Their ranks could soon grow: in the next year or so, initial public offerings by some of the biggest artificial-intelligence companies, OpenAI and Anthropic, both in San Francisco, California, could see the companies valued at more than US$1 trillion apiece, making hundreds of their employees millionaires in the process.

A single antimatter particle in a cage opens door to 'revolutionary' physics Physicists trap and cool down positron for months to measure its 'magnetic moment' with extraordinary precision. By Elizabeth Gibney

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-03342-2 Physicists have now suspended a single positron — the antimatter equivalent of an electron — in mid-air and cooled it to its lowest possible energy state. The set-up will enable researchers to study magnetic properties of the positron with unprecedented precision. Physicist hope to spot subtle differences between matter and antimatter that could shed light on one of physics’ greatest mysteries.

Global emissions slow — but world hurtles towards 2 °C of warming The United Nations’ latest climate report is a stark reminder that limiting warming to the safest levels is now likely out of reach. By James Dinneen

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-03355-x Despite a possible plateau in global greenhouse-gas emissions last year, average temperatures are set to hurtle past 2 °C of warming around mid-century barring a major acceleration in emissions cuts, finds the United Nations’ latest report on climate change.

This lizard’s ‘great escape’ was frozen in amber for 99 million years A tiny fossil tail offers the first “irrefutable” proof of a dropped tail 19 Oct 20266:20 PM ETByRodrigo Pérez Ortega

https://www.science.org/content/article/lizard-s-great-escape-was-frozen-amber-99-million-years?utm_source=Live+Audience&utm_campaign=b691f2a608-nature-briefing-daily-20261020&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-33f35e09ea-50432164 A 99-million-year-old fossilized lizard tail seems to be the oldest-known evidence of the creatures’ ability to intentionally detach their appendages. Many modern-day lizards escape from predators by shedding and leaving behind their tails as a distraction, an ability called caudal autotomy. A 3D reconstruction of the fossilized tail revealed rosette-like wedges of muscle around a clean-cut bone — characteristics similar to those of modern shed tails. Researchers had long suspected that this behaviour was ancient in origin, but had found little evidence of it in known fossils.

US government probe into postdoc visas worries scientists The administration says that the universities being investigated are using the visas to undercut wages for US nationals, but researchers say that restricting international applications could harm science. By Nicola Jones

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-03345-z?utm_source=Live+Audience&utm_campaign=b691f2a608-nature-briefing-daily-20261020&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-33f35e09ea-50432164 The US government has launched an investigation into nine universities’ employment of international researchers. The probe’s purpose is to reduce “visa fraud”, according to vice-president JD Vance, who said that these universities are using too many J-1 visas — the main type used by international postdoctoral researchers in the United States. Critics say that the rationale for the investigation is flawed, that international postdocs play a crucial part in US laboratories and that the announcement is deepening the sense of unease felt by international scientists.

Climate scientists face deluge of public-records requests about fossil-fuel studies A Nature investigation identified more than 30 requests since 2024 to US universities in a campaign questioning climate attribution science. By James Dinneen

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-03275-w?utm_source=Live+Audience&utm_campaign=b691f2a608-nature-briefing-daily-20261020&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-33f35e09ea-50432164 Climate scientists in the United States are facing a surge in public-records requests about their work linking emissions from fossil fuels to environmental harms. “Climate attribution is under attack,” says climate scientist Christopher Callahan. Requests of this kind are legal. But some researchers say the field has become a target because it plays a growing role in lawsuits against major industrial emitters. They say that the volume of requests seems intended to dissuade work on climate attribution, wastes time and public money, and could suppress healthy scientific debate.

Idefix weighs 25 kilograms on Earth, but will weigh only 12 grams — about the weight of one Earth pencil — when it lands on Phobos in August 2027.

Three reasons why AI is not conscious and perhaps never will be Large language models can mimic thought and feeling with uncanny skill. But evidence from neuroscience suggests that intelligence alone is not enough for subjective experience. By Anil K. Seth, Ned Block & Giulio Tononi

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-03313-7?utm_source=Live+Audience&utm_campaign=b691f2a608-nature-briefing-daily-20261020&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-33f35e09ea-50432164 Large language models (LLMs) can mimic thought and feeling with uncanny skill — but they are not conscious, and deeming them so could hinder attempts to regulate them, argue neuroscientists Anil Seth and Giulio Tononi and philosopher Ned Block. LLMs beguile us by aping human language, the authors argue, noting that other impressive systems — such as AlphaFold, the protein-structure-prediction tool — aren’t considered to possess consciousness. And the mind isn’t merely a carbon-based computer — the living tissue of the human brain is essential, according to the leading theories of consciousness. Silicon-based computers are very unlikely to be sufficient for consciousness, and don’t satisfy certain crucial properties that conscious brains do, the authors write.

Tutankhamun: The Life and Death of The Warrior Boy King. Part One Russell Jacquet-Acea 2020, Akhenaten and Biblical Joseph, Bringers of Monotheism to Egypt

https://www.academia.edu/43378534/Tutankhamun_The_Life_and_Death_of_The_Warrior_Boy_King_Part_One?rhid=43381231104&swp=rr-rw-wc-3253994&nav_from=985625fa-e215-410f-a8be-3f5375e85b53 Pharaoh Tutankhamun remains one of the most well-known Pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Born as “Tutankhaten”, historians are now realizing that when he took the throne at the age of 10, he became Egypt’s “Warrior Pharaoh”, dying in battle at age 19. Most commonly known as “King Tut”, he left no heir to the throne, built no structures of importance, made no contributions to Egyptian history and was buried in haste inside a small tomb not fit for a King. Yet Tut’s legacy is due to the discovery of his intact tomb that contained the most valuable collection of riches ever found. It was the discovery of the Millennium! When Howard Carter along with the Earl of Carnarvon discovered and entered the tomb on 27 November 1922, Carter breached a hole in the first door and stuck a candle in to see what was in there. “Details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, stange animals, statues and gold - ‘everywhere the glint of gold’ he later said. When Lord Carnarvon asked him ‘Can you see anything?’ Carter answered “Yes, wonderful things”. Tut’s” arrival on the scene came at a most tumultuous time in Egypt’s history. Tut’s grandparents Akhenaten and Nefertiti had turned Egypt’s religious and social world upside down with Akhenaten’s monotheistic attempt at Atenism and the banishment of the traditional gods of Egypt. The new city Akhenaten built and where Tut was raised was called “Akhet-Aten” meaning “The Horizon of the Aten” and must have been magnificent. However, this was all accomplished by the neglect of the Egyptian territorial lands up north Akhenaten’s ancestors had conquered. Their cries for help went unanswered as the powerful Hittite Empire, led by its warrior king Suppiluliuma swooped in and completely subdued previously held territories of Egypt north of Kadesh. When Akhenaten died Nefertiti’s attempt at a political solution to avoid war with the Hittites was a request to the Hittite King to send his son to her for marriage. That scheme failed when both were forced to disappear from the scene of life. Nefertiti suddenly died and the Hittite Prince Zannanza was assassinated. This caused an all-out war between Egypt and Hatti, a war that was in full fray when Tutankhamun took the throne as a young boy. It was during Tutankhamun’s reign that the first Habiru prisoners were brought to Egypt that began generations of enslavement. He was unfortunately handed the reigns of physically leading the war on the battlefield like his ancestors had done before him. Tut however, lacked the experience his ancestors had in battle and was defeated far away from home before being brought back to Egypt for a rushed burial. It was a most traumatizing disappointment to all of Egypt to have lost their young king. The solution from that point on was that Pharaoh, although old, had to be an experienced professional military man. Aya, Horemheb and Ramesses I followed Tutankhamun as aging warrior pharaohs in their fierce war against the Hittites, a war that would last until Ramesses II’s peace treaty with the Hittites in his Year 21, ca. 1258BC, some 66 years after Suppiluliuma had declared war on Egypt. Many decades-long held beliefs about Tutankhamun and this Atenist era will be re-examined, corrected and updated with additional present-day facts of Tutankhamun’s status as a Warrior King.

The title of the book refers to Meritaton as the unknown Queen of Akhet-Aton. Indeed, she is difficult to define, one of her trademarks in iconographic art is the bald head and often she does not wear any cloths… The book tries to collect important information and images of the Queen that might have played a pivotal role in the transition of the falling Amarna period back to the conventional state concept under King Tutankhamun. Ankhesenamun, Queen Consort of Tutankhamun. The book deals with the life and death of Ankhesenamun, the queen consort at Tutankhamun's side, which can be reconstructed from historical sources. The question of whether she was the mysterious Dahamunzu, who wrote a strange letter to the hostile king of the Hittites, is discussed in detail. On the basis of the images that can be attributed to her, an attempt is also made to define the appearance of Ankhesenamun and to suggest possible mummies, which are discussed in the research (KV 21A or CG 61076). It is possible, however, that the burial of Ankhesenamun has not yet been found, for there are no traces that would indicate a looted tomb. Combined publication of Ankhesenamun and Merytaten

Mertitaton and Ankhesenamun. The Royal Daughter of Queen Nefertiti Updated and Enlarged 2026 Edition Dr. Michael E . Habicht

https://www.academia.edu/179080248/Mertitaton_and_Ankhesenamun_The_Royal_Daughter_of_Queen_Nefertiti_Updated_and_Enlarged_2026_Edition?email_work_card=title Meritaton & Ankhesenamun: The Royal Daughters of Queen Nefertiti The first part of this volume focuses on Meritaton (aka Merytaten), the enigmatic and often elusive Queen of Akhet-Aton. Distinctive in iconographic art for her shaven head and frequent depictions without clothing, her historical role remains highly debated. This book synthesizes critical data and visual evidence to analyse her pivotal position during the transition from the declining Amarna period under Nefertiti (Smenkhkare) back to the traditional state concept re-established under King Tutankhamun. The second part reconstructs the life and demise of Ankhesenamun, queen consort to Tutankhamun, based on contemporary historical sources. It features a detailed discussion on whether she can be identified as the mysterious 'Dahamunzu', author of the extraordinary letter to the Hittite king. Utilizing attributable imagery, the study explores Ankhesenamun’s physical appearance and evaluates current academic debates surrounding potential maternal mummies (such as KV 21A or CG 61076). Furthermore, the text addresses the possibility that her final resting place remains undiscovered, given the lack of recorded traces pointing to a looted tomb. Revised, updated, and enlarged 2026 edition.

A clear example of this was the land belonging to the now-defunct Community of Villages of Daroca, where, following the conquest of the town in 1120, a significant number of livestock farmers, coming from both within and outside the kingdom, gradually settled. The abundance of land, coupled with low population density, meant that the residents were able to graze their herds — consisting mainly of small livestock — within the boundaries of the Community, without having to resort to transhumance. However, the growing importance of livestock farming from the 14th century onwards meant that its pastures were coveted by many, especially by livestock farmers from Zaragoza. This group was very powerful from a political and economic standpoint, and enjoyed a large number of privileges —the most valuable, and undoubtedly the most controversial, being that of universal grazing rights—, some of which conflicted with those held by the residents of the Daroca Community. Numerous conflicts arose with them right up until the very dissolution of this institution in 1837. These external pressures, but also internal needs, led the Community to create a large number of dehesas and to attempt to protect their exclusive use, closing them off throughout the year whenever possible. Thanks to the historical records, we know that there were various types of dehesas and restricted areas, and that the penalties for trespassing varied considerably depending on both the offence committed and the village that owned the land. The dehesas were protected during the major land-clearing processes that took place in the Community during the 16th century, owing to the large influx of people who came to these lands during that period. This is undoubtedly explained by the importance of this activity in this region of Aragon and the extent to which the Community’s officials were aware of it.

History of Knowlege, Economic Analysis, and Power Struggles Jakob Tanner Jakob Tanner, History of Knowledge, Economic Analysis and Power Struggles, in: Nach Feierabend. Zürcher Jahrbuch für Wissensgeschichte 15, Zürich: Diaphanes 2020, S. 145-158.

https://www.academia.edu/44057778/History_of_Knowlege_Economic_Analysis_and_Power_Struggles?email_work_card=title This article outlines what the history of knowledge can contribute to a problemsensitive analysis of the economy, which is understood not as a well-defined and separated subsystem, but as a blurred reality, entangled with every aspect of the tightly interwoven social life. From this vantage point, the problem of any economy appears to be less about the optimal allocation of resources through pricing systems or planning techniques but rather about communication processes and the use of knowledge. In this respect, there is an affinity to the question posed by Friedrich A. Hayek in his famous 1945 paper "The use of knowledge in society," who criticized an understanding of economics as a fully transparent reality with given "data" that markets of bureaucracies can process in order to come up with a "rational economic order." 2 However, instead of focusing on the adaptive function of "dispersed bits of incomplete and frequently contradictory knowledge which all the separate individuals possess" in complex social systems (as Hayek suggested), 3 in this article the social fact of power asymmetries is at the center of the analysis. How can knowledge generate power? A striking answer to this question emphasizes the intrinsic uncertainty of any economic activity and argues with the concomitant volatility and intricacies of expectation building. This draws attention away from the continuous incremental transformations and discoveries in normal times to the discontinuous and conflict-laden changes in economic booms and crisis periods. It becomes then evident that the statistical predictability of forthcoming events resp. the calculation of risks gives way to an awareness of imponderable contingencies that may break up historical continuums by thwarting the aspirations of all actors concerned. In particular, we come to see the capitalist dynamic, which has reshaped the world over recent centuries, as fueled by "imagined futures" and driven by "fictional expectations." 4 These terms are taken from the title of a seminal book by Jens Beckert who captures this phenomenon conclusively by exploring the knowledge-power-nexus and emphasizing the de facto potency of imaginary projections into the future. In this approach, the exertion of power consists in the capacity to coin and influence the expectations of other actors (or "third parties"): "To have power means: My expectations count!" 5 diaphanes eTexT: Beleg_Jakob_Tanner / 28.09.2020

The reconstruction is verified for the field plan BM 46719, which preserves a scratch calculation on its reverse. Each step was or could be achieved by consulting metrological and arithmetical tables, which strongly reduces the need for computation.

The Iranian Mirza Hosayn Ali Nuri (1817–1892), known as Bahāʾu’llāh (“Glory of God”) founded the Baha’i faith in 1863 as an offshoot of the Bābī sect, founded by Mīrzā Mirza ʿAlīi Moḥammad Muhammad (the Bāb, “gateway”, 1819–1850) in 1844. Baha’i began as a Twelver Shia offshoot but developed into a universal monotheist tradition. The idea of a universal language and a universal divine polity are sourced from the Bible, and in modernity connected the Baha’i faith to the United Nations and the artificial universal language Esperanto, developed by L. L. Zamenhof (1859-1917) and launched in 1887. These developments in new religion, new language, and global cooperation suggested a certain optimism about the future as 1900 loomed. In the twenty-first century, the situation is reversed; sovereign citizens and the founding of micro-nations link with the proliferation of personal spiritualities/ invented religions, and strategies of linguistic variance, including revitalisation of Indigenous and regional languages. This paper argues that democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and civil liberties favoured the growth of individualism and enabled the diverse manifestations of politics, religion, and cultural identity. Yet, these relatively innocuous developments have a shadow side, the erosion of democratic governments, the collapse of multi-lateral treaties, and the assault on rights and freedoms.

It draws on the latest results of the Italian-Palestinian Expedition and on a critical reassessment of the data from earlier expeditions. Jericho was destroyed at the end of the Middle Bronze III and almost abandoned in the Late Bronze IA. From the mid-15th century BC onward it regained an urban form, smaller than before but still structured, and became part of the system of vassal centres of the Egyptian empire of the 18th and 19th Dynasties. The paper focuses on the “Spring Hill”, the eastern acropolis of the site. New excavations there have clarified its complex stratigraphy and defined the role of the so-called “Middle Building”. This building is interpreted as the residence of the local governor and as a seat of administrative and ideological functions, as a 14th-century BC cuneiform tablet shows. The study of the necropolis, especially Tombs 4, 5 and 13, adds a complementary picture. It shows a socially stratified elite with access to Cypriot, Aegean and Egyptian imports, active in the same chronological horizons as the residence on the acropolis. Taken together, the topographical, architectural, funerary and historical-political data show that Late Bronze Age Jericho was not a marginal or abandoned site. It was a resilient urban centre, though reduced in size. The city came to an end within the first quarter of the 13th century BC, probably through a combination of earthquakes and military action in the Ramesside period. Finally, the article confirms that there is no archaeological basis for linking this phase of the city’s history to the biblical account of Joshua 6, which was written many centuries later in the ideological and political context of the 1st millennium BC.
