La fortaleza de Oréshek está situada en una isla en el nacimiento del río Nevá, al este de San Petersburgo. Construida en el siglo XIV, fue un importante puesto defensivo tanto para los rusos como para los suecos, que la controlaron durante 90 años. Tras la Gran Guerra del Norte, la fortaleza quedó muy alejada del frente y se convirtió primero en prisión para delincuentes políticos y, posteriormente, en museo. La invasión alemana de 1941 la obligó a recordar su heroico pasado.

La relación entre el cine y la literatura se remonta hasta la misma aparición del séptimo arte: no solo porque, ya desde sus inicios, se adaptaron obras de ficción a la gran pantalla, sino porque tanto las estructuras narrativas como los propios argumentos cinematográficos surgieron de la traslación de los recursos dramáticos presentes durante siglos en mitos, fábulas y leyendas, en novelas, obras de teatro u óperas.
Para ahondar en las sinergias entre papel y pantalla, cinco autores y autoras de Anagrama pondrán a nuestra disposición su saber cinematográfico, sus experiencias, sus gustos y su pasión por el cine. Además de recorrer su canon personal, hablaremos del papel de las salas de cine, de la experiencia de dirigir una película, de montarla como quien edita un texto e incluso de trabajar a partir de un relato para adaptarlo a la gran pantalla.

Forty years after the adoption of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion in 1986, this symposium examines what has become of the integration of the social determinants of health into professional practices, healthcare delivery, public policies, and health education. The Charter contributed to broadening the understanding of health by emphasizing its social, economic, environmental, and political dimensions, while promoting equity, participation, and the reorientation of health services. Yet the notion of social determinants also raises a lasting tension within the social sciences. On the one hand, it has supported analyses of health inequalities rooted in structural social relations, including class, gender, and racialization. On the other, reducing social relations to measurable factors such as income, education, or housing risks turning structural inequalities into technical variables and policy indicators. The symposium therefore focuses on the institutional question raised by the Charter’s call to “reorient health services”: how do knowledge and concepts developed at the population and policy levels become operative in concrete situations, professional reasoning, clinical decision-making, and training? It brings together approaches from sociology, anthropology, history, political science, philosophy, law, economics, geography, healthcare, and education to examine processes of translation, appropriation, and transformation.

Blockchain systems rely on classical cryptography of public key encryption and hash functions for its security. These security mechanisms of the distributed technology is made possible by complex mathematical computations, integer factorization and discrete logarithm problems. The emergence of quantum technology is expected to reduce the security of current cryptographic systems. As a result, companies adopting blockchain-based solutions, becomes prone to quantum attack in long-term strategic planning. Grover's and Shor's quantum algorithms, which attack the cryptographic principles on which the blockchain is built, currently pose the biggest threat to the blockchain. To counter these threats, the post-quantum cryptography was proposed. The main aim of this study is to critically analyzed the security of classical blockchain and present some post-quantum implementation algorithms in developing a quantumbased blockchain system that would be able to withstand any attacks using quantum technology.

The review underscores QPP’s versatility across both symmetric and asymmetric cryptography through three core representations: matrix-based for classical encryption, quantum gates for quantum-native encryption, and arithmetic-based for multivariate public key systems such as Merkle–Hellman cryptosystems, multivariate public key cryptography (MPKC), and the most recent homomorphic polynomial public key (HPPK). In particular, QPP strengthens the security of HPPK’s key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) and digital signature (DS) schemes, thus offering robust quantum resistance. This work further examines QPP’s integration with various encryption techniques for enhancing resilience against quantum attacks. Blockchain technology has been prominent recently due to its applications in cryptocurrency. Numerous decentralized blockchain applications have been possible due to blockchains' nature of distributed, secured, and peer-to-peer storage. One of its technical pillars is using public-key cryptography and hash functions, which promise a secure, pseudoanonymous, and distributed storage with nonrepudiation. This security is believed to be difficult to break with classical computational powers. However, recent advances in quantum computing have raised the possibility of breaking these algorithms with quantum computers, thus, threatening the blockchains' security. Quantum-resistant blockchains are being proposed as alternatives to resolve this issue. Some propose to replace traditional cryptography with postquantum cryptography-others base their approaches on quantum computer networks or quantum internets. Nonetheless, a new security infrastructure (e.g., access control/authentication) must be established before any of these could happen. This article provides a theoretical analysis of the quantum blockchain technologies that could be used for decentralized identity authentication. We put together a conceptual design for a quantum blockchain identity framework and give a review of the technical evidence. We investigate its essential components and feasibility, effectiveness, and limitations. Blockchain is one of the most discussed and highly accepted technologies, primarily due to its application in almost every field where third parties are needed for trust. Blockchain technology relies on distributed consensus for trust, which is accomplished using hash functions and public-key cryptography. Most of the cryptographic algorithms in use today are vulnerable to quantum attacks. In this work, a systematic literature review is done so that it can be repeated, starting with identifying the research questions. Focusing on these research questions, literature is analysed to find the answers to these questions. The survey is completed by answering the research questions and identification of the research gaps. It is found in the literature that 30% of the research solutions are applicable for the data layer, 24% for the application and presentation layer, 23% for the network layer, 16% for the consensus layer and only 1% for hardware and infrastructure layer. We also found that 6% of the solutions are not blockchain-based but present different distributed ledger technology.

Introduction: Lattice mismatch at the heterointerface of a core–shell quantum dot (CSQD) architecture generates significant internal strain. The geometrical dimensions of the core and shell regions govern the strain distribution, which modifies the electronic band structure of the quantum dot. The indium nitride/gallium nitride (InN/GaN) CSQD system, possessing a substantial lattice mismatch of approximately 10%, serves as an ideal model for exploring these geometry-dependent band-edge modifications.
Materials and methods: An analytical theoretical framework for a spherical InN/GaN CSQD is developed to calculate geometry-dependent hydrostatic strain and its effect on band-edge shifts. The analytical model utilizes the elastic continuum approximation and deformation-potential formalism. Assuming an idealized, coherent, and defect-free core–shell interface, dimension-dependent strain values, strain-induced band-edge shifts, and interface band offsets were calculated. The dimensional changes include systematically varying the InN core radius and GaN shell thickness between 4 nm and 6 nm.
Results: The analytical calculations demonstrate that the InN core undergoes compressive hydrostatic strain, while the GaN shell experiences tensile hydrostatic strain. Increasing the core radius reduced the compressive strain in the core while enhancing the tensile strain in the shell, resulting in a decreased core and shell band-gap energy. In contrast, increasing the shell thickness subjected the core to greater compressive strain, which increased the core and shell band-gap energy. Across the investigated geometrical variations, the calculated core band-gap energy varies by approximately 13.4–13.9 meV, while the shell band-gap energy varies by approximately 23.8–24.8 meV. Despite these energy shifts, the system retains a stable Type-I band alignment, with the conduction band offset dominating approximately 75% of the total discontinuity.
Conclusions: The findings establish a predictable correlation between the structural geometry of InN/GaN CSQD, the hydrostatic strain, and its influence on band-edge positions. This study provides a theoretical framework for utilizing geometry-induced band-structure engineering, providing a basis for future investigations into the optoelectronic properties of strained III-nitride heterostructures.

Load-carrying was part of the daily infrastructure of Nile Valley societies. Water, firewood, food, children, agricultural products, mud, stone and ritual goods all had to be moved through repeated bodily practices. This study approaches carrying as a learned, gendered and embodied technique: taught socially, repeated through life, and potentially visible in the skeleton. Carrying is not only mechanical movement. It is learned through practice, organised by sex and age, and repeated within household, agricultural, funerary and productive life. Following this approach, the skeleton is treated as a partial record of repeated bodily experience rather than as a direct label for one specific task. Markers were recorded through standardised qualitative grades and transformed into numerical values. Average indices were calculated by anatomical domain: Humeral index Vertebral index Cranio-cervical index Total biomechanical index Means were used to explore general intensity of skeletal change. Standard deviations were used to examine variability within groups. Statistical results were interpreted together with preservation, sample size and archaeological context. Kerma suggests more gendered carrying repertoires: women linked to head-neck loading, men to shoulder, back or unilateral loads. Egyptian colonial Tombos reorganised those practices. Carrying became more mixed, shared and embedded in frontier life. Early Napatan Tombos maintained this transformed repertoire. Egyptian-Nubian contact reshaped how people carried weight, not only how they buried the dead.

On 9 and 10 December 1991, the European Citizen was created during the Maastricht European Council. Since then, Europeans of the member states of the European Union (EU) have witnessed the introduction of a common currency, and the institutional, administrative, and civic Europeanization of Europe characterizes an arguably new Europe for the new millennium. In contrast to the administrative and civic Europeanization, there many and varied debates about what it means or may mean to be European and about European culture. In the context of these discussions, the comparative study of literature of migrants can be productive. Although somewhat different for the individual EU member states, the history of literature of migrants and its reception have unfolded in similar ways. In addition to the creation of a conflicted relationship between national and migrant literature, terms like the German Gastarbeiterliteratur have not only created a separate and distinct category for migrant literature, but have also served to limit its authors to a single characteristic (they are 'guest workers') and, by extension, the content of the works to a few themes such as feelings of loneliness, loss of home, a sense of isolation, etc. Significantly, what dominated the discourse about migrant literature was the concern with themes rather than with its vehicle, i.e., language. The literary productions of migrants to Germany during the past two decades invite comparison of these works to explore the extent and degree to which they are contributions to the debates about 'European identity'. As basis for comparison serve examples from diverse texts and authors with diverse language backgrounds such as Italian, French, Japanese, Arabic, and Turkish, for example. The authors are different in terms of both their (or their parents') countries of origin and in terms of their current homes and languages. The intentional reference to such variegated works serves to illuminate that despite the authors being subject to different first languages, they also have in common the translinguistic character of their texts. Importantly, the translinguistic aspects of the texts do not constitute the encounter (or even clash) between two given cultures (homeland and country of residence). Instead, each of the texts presents instances of the linguistic and creative potential when any two cultures 'meet' to inform each other and, in the process, both emerge as changed. One of the effects on the reader/recipient of the text or texts is defamiliarization with his or her native language; she or he is thus invited not only to encounter something (another culture/country) or someone (the narrator) Other but to also experience the assumed 'normal' (most readers' native language) as Other. In this sense, the different texts all 'teach' that alterity is not far away, but that it exists where one might not expect it (at home, in one's native language). The creative, aesthetic and profound play with language may not bring anyone closer to answering questions about 'European identity' (and may indeed raise new questions in addition to existing ones). However, the turn to its constitutive medium, i.e., language, clearly outlines the challenges that are implicit in recent migrant literatures across Europe and across other parts of the world. For Germany (and Europe), one of these challenges is to acknowledge current realities (as a consequence of historical phenomena) and to reimagine itself as the heterogenous space it has always been.

The rise of quantum computing introduces a profound threat to existing digital security frameworks, particularly those that underpin modern payment systems. Current cryptographic standards, such as RSA, ECC, and ECDSA are susceptible to being broken by quantum algorithms like Shor's and Grover's, jeopardizing the confidentiality, authenticity, and integrity of transactions across financial networks. This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the design, feasibility, and architecture of a universal quantum-safe payment platform capable of processing all types of digital transactions, ranging from mobile money and bank transfers to blockchain-based and card payments through existing delivery channels on a decentralized infrastructure. The research synthesizes current developments in post-quantum cryptography (PQC), including lattice-based, hash-based, and code-based algorithms, and evaluates their suitability for real-time financial systems. The proposed platform incorporates a permissioned distributed ledger, API-level compatibility with legacy financial protocols, and an identity-governed, modular architecture that enables cryptographic agility and policy compliance. Through architectural modeling and critical analysis, this research provides a forward-looking blueprint for building quantum-resilient financial infrastructure. It concludes that while performance and governance hurdles remain, quantum-safe payment networks are both technically feasible and urgently necessary. This work aims to equip stakeholders, especially fintech firms, banks, and regulatory bodies, with a detailed roadmap for transitioning to secure, interoperable, and scalable payment systems in the quantum era.

Avec une emprise cumulée d’1,16 hectare, il s’agit de la troisième fouille extensive sur cette agglomération laténienne, dont l’étendue est estimée à environ 150 hectares (Deberge et al. 2007, 2019). Bien qu’assez mal dotée en moyens eu égard à la densité et à la nature des vestiges, les résultats de cette opération, encore préliminaires à ce stade, renouvèlent sensiblement la connaissance du site.

The paths of economic transitions in the two communist countries have been distinct. China's transition away from state socialism is generally considered a success while Russia's is not. Why did China have a better transition away from a communist economy than Russia? This study compares and contrasts the evolution of the Chinese and Russian economic reforms over the past few decades. It examines many differences and a few points of similarity. Differences include initial conditions and political leadership as well as external economic environments. Nevertheless, despite Russia's ongoing economic difficulties, both countries have made substantial progresses in their moves from communism to capitalism. The two countries are currently converging on a similar economic model of state-led development.

The article offers a large-scope assessment of archaeological and ethnoarchaeological research on foodways within the core Mediterranean heartlands of the Ottoman Empire. It integrates evidence from a range of historical and archaeological sources, both terrestrial and underwater. After presenting an overview of 30 years of scholarship on the subject, it introduces the Ottoman manner of eating, cooking, and dining with the help of glazed tablewares and unglazed coarse wares from archaeological contexts. Furthermore, it shows the means of transportation and the trade routes for foodstuffs, as well as the ways in which they were cooked and consumed, from the sultan's court to country folk in rural villages. Este trabalho trata da análise da cultura material de um sítio arqueológico Guarani (sítios RS-JC-56 e RS-JC-57, considerados um único sítio para efeitos desta tese). Para tanto, realizou-se um breve histórico da arqueologia Guarani no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Abordou-se os remanescentes arqueológicos através dos conceitos de testemunhos, termo utilizado por André Leroi-Gourhan nas escavações do sítio de Pincevent, França, na década de 1960. Apresentou-se a escavação do sítio, os procedimentos utilizados para a classificação das áreas escavadas em área de habitação e área de descarte. A partir da análise dos diferentes testemunhos, realizou-se considerações sobre o uso e função dos artefatos estudados. Também foram apresentadas a cronologia do sítio e uma breve discussão sobre as técnicas utilizadas, com base em mais de vinte e cinco datações realizadas. Apresentaram-se, ainda, algumas interpretações sobre o uso do espaço a partir da distribuição dos testemunhos.

Neste artigo, buscamos evidenciar a presença dos povos originários no município de Doutor Camargo, localizado no médio Rio Ivaí no Estado do Paraná. Apresentam-se as pesquisas arqueológicas desenvolvidas na região e no município, onde foram identificados 14 sítios arqueológicos entre 1968 e 2022, que foram georreferenciados e espacializados a fim de demonstrar que as margens do Rio Ivaí foi uma região atrativa para ocupação humana. As corredeiras do rio foram locais preciosos para a obtenção de proteína animal de peixes, aves e outros animais, suas matas fornecerem uma infinidade de bens para alimentação e abrigos. As primeiras populações de caçadorescoletores chegaram por volta de 6.500 AP, seguida da chegada dos povos ceramistas Guarani por volta de 1490 ± 45 anos AP.

The long-standing debate surrounding Troy as a potential historical source of Plato's Atlantis offers a revealing case study of these dynamics. In recent decades, discussion of the hypothesis has increasingly shifted from methodological evaluation toward classificatory judgments about the legitimacy of the interpretation itself. This tendency became particularly visible when the hypothesis was addressed in a volume devoted to demarcating archaeology from pseudoscience, thereby implicitly situating it within such a classificatory framework, despite its publication in peer-reviewed venues. The subsequent diffusion of this framing through secondary knowledge infrastructures, including Wikipedia, illustrates how contested assessments can become stabilized as seemingly established facts. This article analyzes passages found in Tibetan writings from the early Great Perfection tradition that prescribe the cultivation and consumption of psychoactive fungi as an integral part of the Buddhist path. It identifies these passages as the first instances discovered in premodern Buddhist literature in which the use of psychedelics is unambiguously prescribed to hasten progress toward awakening. In so doing, it makes two central arguments: one, that mounting scholarly consensus claiming premodern Buddhists never used psychoactive substances as part of Buddhist contemplative practice is in need of correction; and two, that the early Tibetan Great Perfection tradition and others that integrate medicine and meditation can serve as resources for investigating how premodern Buddhists envisioned the role of psychedelics in developing contemplative experience. The article concludes with suggestions for how this and similarly focused text-historical research in Buddhist studies might contribute to scientific research on the possible relationships between contemplation and psychedelics.

Gran manual del fracaso Desmontar el éxito, la identidad y el amor Juanpe Sánchez López ¿Se puede aprender a fracasar? ¿Se puede fracasar bien? ¿Cómo romper ese palito recto con el que nos medimos?

Entrelazando lo personal con el análisis cultural, Gran manual del fracaso, de Juanpe Sánchez López, reflexiona acerca de la dicotomía entre éxito y fracaso y cómo estos conceptos han permeado en nuestras vida, en ocasiones convirtiéndolos en la vara de medir diversos aspectos íntimos, como nuestros cuerpos, el amor o incluso la forma en que nos acercamos al arte.
Aprovechando que la semana pasada este ensayo llegó a librerías, hemos conversado con el autor sobre algunos de los aspectos claves del libro.
El título, Gran manual del fracaso, con la ironía. ¿Crees que existe el riesgo de convertir también el fracaso en una nueva forma de rendimiento? Fracasa mejor, aprende de tus errores, conviértete en una versión mejor de ti mismo.
El título es irónico no solo con la propuesta contradictoria que supone en sí la idea de manual con el fracaso, también es juguetón con el propio formato del libro, que es una cosa pequeña, manejable, corta; y a la vez ese «gran manual», como si ahí fueran a estar encerradas todas las respuestas. Lo que quería hacer con esa contradicción del título es encerrar justamente el oxímoron al que nos enfrentamos cuando intentamos manejar, controlar e incluso aprovechar el fracaso.
Y contestando a la pregunta, no creo que exista el riesgo porque ya es una realidad. El fracaso ya se está convirtiendo en una parte del discurso neoliberal: fracasamos para tener éxito, nos caemos para aprender a ser mejores. Esta idea de que todos tenemos que pasar por la fase del fracaso es una trampa, porque invisibiliza el hecho de que hay personas que juegan con ventaja, que están mucho más cerca del éxito, por su clase, por su género, por su raza; y, sobre todo, crea una idea individualizadora del camino: eres tú quien tiene que trabajar, eres tú quien tiene que aprender, estás solo. Cuando este fracaso lo absorben los discursos de la productividad y de la normatividad, se borran las condiciones sociales, culturales y económicas.
Hay una imagen muy potente que aparece a lo largo del libro: ese «palito recto» con el que desde pequeños aprendemos a medir nuestras vidas, y que, sin embargo, tú sostienes que estaba roto desde el principio. ¿El problema está en nuestra incapacidad para alcanzar la medida o quizá se encuentra en la medida misma? ¿En qué momento uno se empieza a plantear esa reflexión?
No sé si hay un momento generalizado o único que te hace saber que el problema no afecta meramente a lo individual y que es, sobre todo, una cuestión colectiva, social y cultural. Desde luego, sí creo que este conocimiento está ligado a una sensación en la que uno se piensa como insuficiente, como fracasado. Ocurre cuando no pasamos una prueba, cuando no conseguimos algo que supuestamente queríamos (...) cuando de repente detrás de esa decepción, de esa tristeza, se amaga un atisbo de placer, de honestidad, de que ahí hay algo que importa, de que en ese hacerlo mal, hacerlo fracasadamente, existe un destello de espacios que desearíamos transitar, aunque no sean los más aplaudidos, los más prestigiosos o los más normativos. Quiero decir: sospechamos que aquello a lo que llamamos éxito no nos encaja cuando fracasamos; y ese fracaso nos hace ver que hay otros caminos y que esos caminos quizás sean más alegres y más disfrutables para nosotros.
Reflexionas también sobre el discurso del fracaso y el cuerpo como una economía de compensaciones: si no puedo ser deseable de una manera, intentaré ser excepcional de otra. ¿Hasta qué punto nuestras identidades se forjan como estrategias para compensar aquello que previamente hemos aprendido a considerar una falta?
Nuestras vidas se comprenden dentro de unas dinámicas que pueden ser crueles y violentas, en las que uno debe poseer ciertos rasgos, actitudes y aptitudes para ser mínimamente querido, mínimamente respetado, mínimamente incluso tolerado. Una vida tranquila significa, muchas veces, ajustarse más o menos a estos patrones. Cuando uno detecta que puede haber algún o algunos fallos en uno mismo con respecto a ese sistema de valores, que no es capaz de cumplir algunos de esos criterios, la respuesta –diría que más obvia e instintiva– es la compensación. Ahora bien (y espero explicarme de forma clara): esta compensación no es un desvío de nuestra verdadera identidad sino que es en sí un rasgo fundante de nosotros mismos. La compensación que se nos empuja a producir para poder ser queridos, respetados o tolerados forma parte intrínseca de quienes somos. Es una estrategia de supervivencia, pero también es un trozo verdadero de nuestro corazón. Ahí está su carácter trágico, porque debajo de lo que nos pasa y de lo que hacemos, debajo de nuestro cuerpo o de nuestros sueños, no hay nada, no hay un verdadero yo: nuestro yo está en aquello que somos capaces o incapaces de hacer para poder ser queridos. Es la condena y a la vez la fortuna de estar vivos: qué hacemos con lo que fuimos, con lo que queremos ser, y cuál es nuestra capacidad de acción, cuáles son nuestros límites.
También analizas el fracaso desde la perspectiva amorosa. El amor es uno de los lugares donde intentamos convertir la vida en una historia de éxito. De hecho, quizás uno de los mayores fracasos amorosos sea precisamente exigirle al amor que garantice que no vamos a perder. ¿No es esa una contradicción irresoluble?
Es un cliché decir esto pero el amor es una cosa compleja. Por un lado, porque nos proporciona seguridades, promesas, visiones hacia el futuro. Por otro, porque es fragilísimo, muchas veces ininteligible y, por supuesto, incontrolable (¿podemos hacer cosas para que nos amen más?). Pero también, por esa misma complejidad, es una cosa hermosa. Vivimos en un momento muy concreto donde se han deshecho muchos mitos del amor romántico y de esa idea que parecía irrompible del «para siempre». Eso nos lleva a terrenos de la incertidumbre: ¿qué hacer entonces si hay cosas que no son duraderas?, ¿a qué nos podemos agarrar? Es quizás más difícil, pero seguro que también es más justa y más satisfactoria una idea del amor que no se da por supuesta, que es dependiente de los sucesos, de los roces, que es accidental. Es mucho más interesante pensar en que las cosas se pueden acabar y que, de hecho, se acaban, porque así podemos contarlas, porque así sabemos que son frágiles, que son importantes, que nosotros estamos inmersos en un mundo donde, a pesar de muchas cosas –y a la vez: gracias a muchas cosas–, terminamos mirando alrededor, buscando miradas, buscando las manos, queriendo que nos quieran. La existencia del amor nos recuerda que no podemos vivir solos y, sobre todo, que seguramente no querríamos vivir solos. Y ese pensamiento que mira hacia lo comunitario es profundamente político.

Del Londres de leer sabemos unas cuantas cosas. Del Londres de viajar también y se resumen en una: no vayas con poco dinero. Tal vez esto del dinero sea importante más adelante (más adelante en este texto, queremos decir).
Londres, la gran metrópoli. Charles Dickens arrastrando su insomnio por las calles, escuchando a borrachos, vagabundos y desesperados en las tabernas, mirando con sus ojos entre la niebla del Támesis, ese río que era a la vez un gran estercolero, “una imagen de la muerte”, y la vía por donde entraba toda la riqueza colonial, una especie de sumidero que tragaba todo lo que vertía la ciudad y todo lo que el mundo tenía para tomar en los territorios de ultramar.
En el capítulo titulado ’Las calles de Londres’, de su sátira colonial Música acuática, T.C. Boyle agarra a Dickens y lo pasa por aquel chiste de los Monty Python titulado ‘Los cuatro de Yorkshire’, unos ricos que compiten a ver quién era más pobre en su infancia. “Hubo una época en que las calles de Londres, plagadas de miasmas y enfermedades, eran una sucesión de estercoleros unidos en vasos comunicantes, dos veces más peligrosas que un campo de batalla y tan aquejadas de incuria como las mazmorras de un manicomio. Eran tiempos muy duros”, escribe. Y continúa con una detallada descripción de todo lo que se encontraba por la calle. El antihéroe Ned Rise, entre el fango y la alta alcurnia, el casi llegar pero no, siempre ha habido clases.
Will Self nos llevó al oscuro corazón de sus mercados y callejones ocultos en ‘Foie humano’, un cuento incluido en Hígado: un tugurio clandestino llamado The Plantation donde beben y beben y vuelven a beber gentes de toda condición, donde se mezclan artistas de éxito con hombres de negocios y otras gentes del hampa. Esa imagen de Self seguramente toma algo de la obra de Iain Sinclair, el paseante, el lector de indicios, una especie de médium entre las capas sepultadas de la ciudad y el presente, como se ve, por ejemplo, en La ciudad de las desapariciones.
Hay en Sinclair la certeza de la maquinaria pesada del comercio y la explotación haciendo crecer una ciudad que él recorre, explora y documenta desde los años sesenta: fábricas, toda la actividad portuaria, tiempos de hardware. Él ha vivido lo suficiente para asistir a un tiempo de software, donde la economía obedece a la especulación, las transacciones desde paraísos fiscales, toda esa red opaca que ha configurado la Londres del siglo XXI. Una ciudad todo fachada donde no es oro todo lo que reluce y todo lo que brilla esconde algo.
Y en esto que llega a la ciudad el periodista Patrick Radden Keefe y escribe un libro sobre esa Londres del presente, la de la apariencia.
A primera hora de la madrugada del 29 de noviembre de 2019, un joven de diecinueve años llamado Zac Brettler cae al Támesis desde un balcón del quinto piso del edificio Riverwalk, una lujosa propiedad en una zona de expansión inmobiliaria. Era el menor de dos hermanos de una familia británica de clase media-alta, pero en otros ámbitos se le conocía con un apellido ruso: se había hecho pasar por el hijo de un oligarca, ese tipo de nuevos ricos que se repartieron los muebles en la mudanza de la antigua URSS hacia el capitalismo y que en Londres encontraron tendida la alfombra roja que siempre despliega el olor del dinero. Decía que estaba metido en negocios, mucho moni en el banco. Cuando murió, la policía investigó su cuenta corriente: tenía cuatro libras. ¿Se suicidó o fue asesinado? El hijo del oligarca es su historia.
“Tengo la sensación de que ha resuelto varios asesinatos”, dijo su colega de The New Yorker, Jia Tolentino, sobre la tenacidad de Patrick Radden Keefe (PRK) para internarse en los laberintos de los sumarios judiciales. La adaptación a serie de televisión de No digas nada –su retrato coral sobre los años duros del conflicto en Irlanda del Norte y ensayo corsario del año 2020– le han colocado en una posición extraña para un periodista, alguien más acostumbrado a hacer las preguntas que a contestarlas, a prestar atención que a convertirse en su centro. Si en libros como El imperio del dolor –sobre la crisis del fentanilo en USA– y Cabeza de serpiente –la inmigración china a Nueva York– había aterrizado grandes tramas hasta el detalle, ahora pone el foco en un caso muy concreto y se mantiene muy cerca de los padres de Zac, que mantuvieron a lo largo del tiempo abierta la pregunta sobre cómo había ocurrido lo que le pasó a su hijo. El cómo es importante.
El hijo del oligarca es un compendió total de PRK: el investigador implacable en busca del dato preciso, el perfilador de personajes (algo que ya comprobamos en su magnífico Maleantes), el que amplia la mirada para ofrecer todo el contexto. El que ha depurado su forma de contar las cosas hasta llegar a un texto que es puro músculo: ese vigor del periodismo narrativo para implicarnos en una historia real con toda la fuerza de las ficciones mejor construidas, una extraña mezcla rítmica entre lo transparente y lo adictivo.
PRK huye de las estrategias tan ubicuas y sensacionalistas del true crime: no hace trampas, no inflama, no inventa hipótesis espectaculares. Busca comprender: a los padres –fuente de la que proviene la gran parte de su investigación– y su sentido de culpa, las genealogías familiares de los sospechosos –desde la Uganda colonial a la metrópoli o a los gánsteres tipo Carter–, la ciudad como un ente en transformación vendida al pelotazo, el dinero viejo y el nuevo y sus colegios de pago como vía de acceso a la élite. El pasado colonial y el presente reflejándose como espejos. Es un libro sobre la mentira, el fingimiento, la ocultación, ese camino al éxito cuya cara B acabó con la vida de un chaval de diecinueve años al que un criptobró le ardía dentro.
“Es como si la ciudad hubiera pasado directamente del siglo XIX al XXI”, dijo un periodista sobre la mentalidad del pelotazo. “Londres se está ahogando y yo vivo junto al río”, cantaban los Clash en ‘London Calling’.
