Following Aram M. Frenkian’s investigation, this study re-examines one of the three elements identified by Frenkian as Indian influences on Sextus’ oeuvre: the smokefire illustration, the snake-rope analogy, and the quadrilemma. The same elements, among others, were identified by Thomas McEvilley as evidence of Greek influence on Madhyamaka Buddhism. After inspecting the supposedly earliest occurrences in both Greek and Indian philosophy and literature, we must acknowledge, at least until other evidence arises, that these three elements are not indicators of direct borrowing. The presence of the same similes and verbal expression in both Indian and Greek philosophical contexts, however, is most probably an indicator of intellectual exchange, even if this is not due to direct influence out of textual contact but more likely arising from verbal communication. It seems practical to postulate a “common pool” of philosophical expressions, a certain distinct philosophical language, which was available to philosophers of both cultures. El concepto de Capitalismo Digital (CD) que surge a fines del siglo XX , así como la publicación de Schiller (2000) que consideraba el CD como “una nueva época que absorbe toda la economía política” (Rivera, 2020), el tema del capitalismo y las nuevas técnicas digitales plantean nuevos modos de producción y nuevas fuentes de creación del valor económico así que diferentes relaciones entre los agentes económicos. Otros autores de inspiración marxista piensan, sin embargo, que el CD no es más que una dimensión del mismo capitalismo con el mismo modo de producción y donde lo único que cambia es el producto (digital) creado por el CD. Para estos intelectuales marxistas es poco probable que el capitalismo sea reemplazado en un futuro próximo. Otro aspecto de la problemática concierne la relación entre los cambios en el sistema económico y los paradigmas sucesivos que tratan de explicar estos cambios. En este articulo trataremos de mostrar que las mutaciones sucesivas del capitalismo en siglos pasados han tenido poca relación (y a veces ninguna) con las teorías económicas. En cambio, la metamorfosis en el CD se repercute no solo en el ámbito social, las instituciones y el marco legislativo que las sostiene sino inclusive en las teorías económicas enseñadas durante décadas en las universidades. Los postulados de base de esas teorías escapan a la lógica del CD: la Inteligencia Artificial, como nuevo agente económico y la interconectividad de los productos transforman no solo las relaciones en la estructura de la cadena del valor y las leyes del mercado (oferta y demanda) sino también plantean la relación hombre-máquina como un enigma que incluye el futuro de la humanidad. Este articulo pretende mostrar también el largo proceso de transformación del capitalismo como una evolución ineluctable (¿dialéctica?) que el mismo Karl Marx diagnosticó en siglos pasados pero que nunca pudo imaginar hasta donde llegaría la metamorfosis del sistema capitalista. Trataremos de mostrar que esa “hoja de ruta” trazada por Marx lleva actualmente al sistema capitalista, no al paraíso comunista profetizado por Marx, sino a un punto culminante donde el hombre pudiera desaparecer frente a su propia creación, la Inteligencia Artificial. Para examinar las principales características de las tres grandes mutaciones del capitalismo y su relación con los principales paradigmas sincrónicos, consideraremos la evolución intrínseca del “capital” como postulado de base que permitirá de identificar los cambios del modo de producción y las características de las metamorfosis social y económica. Se analizará así en primer lugar la revolución industrial (con la emergencia del capital-máquina) luego la revolución financiera (con la emergencia del capital-finanzas) y finalmente la metamorfosis digital (con la emergencia del capital-dato) como nueva fuente de beneficio para el capitalismo. The estate at Loukou is notable for its extensive decorative program, including elaborate mosaics and a large sculpture collection that juxtaposed bespoke copies of famous works with others that were already antiquities at the time of their display in the 2nd c. CE. Both sculptural compositions discussed here belong to the former category and depict two mythological figures in interlocking arrangements (symplegma). The choice of these two sculptures and their unique display at Loukou reflects the preferences of their patron: the sophist, politician, and cosmopolitan benefactor Herodes Atticus. This paper argues that the two paired colossal groups formed the crux of Herodes's custom decorative program at Loukou, where he fostered elite discourse around themes of conflict and loss.

Se constata aquí, además de la construcción de espacios de autoridad y agencia femenina, la transmisibilidad involuntaria de un patrimonio inmaterial cuya interpretación encontraba lógica y significación específica en una etapa de agudas querellas confesionales.

Identity politics, individuation, psychology, digital selves, and life writing testify to the primacy of the self as a spiritual and religious goal. Is this a new phenomenon? This lecture brings together Johan Huizinga’s Homo Ludens: A Study of the Play-Element in Culture (1938) and Erving Goffman’s sociological study The Presentation of the Self in Everyday Life (1956) and argues these two pioneering scholars inadvertently offered a model of the origins of religions that is still not fully integrated into Religious Studies after more than half a century. I argue that play is crucial to the origin of religion, and the performance of self and community offers a model of the maintenance of the religious institution, in that religions are primarily sites of identity. It is concluded that embodied experience (rather than orthodoxy of belief) is the core of religious and spiritual identity and thus is an ignored or neglected factor in the cultural complex that is commonly identified as religion.

I. Gurdjieff (1877-1949) established the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man at the Prieuré des Basses Loges in January 2023. This launch was overshadowed by the death of New Zealand author Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) on 9 January, the day before the official opening. Before Mansfield died Gurdjieff was referred to in the correspondence of many people, and in contemporary journalism, as a “magician” and “charlatan,” and the Institute as an “asylum for the insane.” After his death some pupils wrote accounts of their time with their teacher, including descriptions of group living in the Prieuré, and how it functioned as a template for intentional communities led by Gurdjieff’s pupils and successors. Several novels have taken up the idea that the Prieuré was a kind of mental institution. Surrealist novelist Leonora Carrington was a veteran of incarceration in an asylum and a Fourth Way group, and The Hearing Trumpet (1974) sites Gurdjieff as the medical director of an aged care home; while in Andrew Crumey’s novel Beethoven’s Assassins (2023) the Prieuré becomes a psychiatric hospital in the Scottish Borders with mystical interests run by the enigmatic Dr Hyle. The equivalence between Gurdjieff’s Institute and psychiatric institutions posited by Carrington and Crumey is interrogated and its implications the popular reception of Gurdjieff himself are assessed.

Gurdjieff (c. 1877-1949), in Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson (1950) uses the same metaphor in Chapter 48, “From the Author.” Here it is claimed to be an illustration of Gurdjieff’s teaching on the four potential bodies in human spiritual development (physical, astral, mental and causal) and thus important for the esoteric process of growing a soul. The chariot image is employed in P. D. Ouspensky’s In Search of the Miraculous (1949) in Chapters 2, 5, and 15 to the same ends. This paper examines similarities and differences in the ancient uses of Ratha Kalpana, and compares these to Gurdjieff’s appropriation of the image and specific linking of it to his goal of surviving bodily death through the acquisition of a soul.

How has it been possible to reason with Freud in support of both emancipatory and normalizing forms of modernity? Drawing on six cases studies, this issue compares their historical variants in order to reconstruct their transformations and shed light on the reversibility of this diagnosis of the times. Whether framed in terms of reception, circulation, transfer, or appropriation, studies of Freud have generally relied on a transmission model. While this perspective accounts for the international diffusion of psychoanalysis, it is less well equipped to explain how the same way of reasoning with Freud could support diagnoses of the times that were both emancipatory and normalizing. This special issue proposes to shift the analysis from the transmission of ideas to the transformation of ways of judging modernity. It advances the hypothesis that, in Freud, the articulation of the development of personality, civilization, and morality constitutes a generative mode of reasoning that makes possible divergent yet plausible reassignments. The variants observable in colonial, national, and postcolonial political conjunctures make it possible to reconstruct the intellectual transformations from Poland to New Zealand, through Madagascar, India, Brazil, and Korea.

Another issue is how to best combine data collected for a range of purposes, with new custom-collated data, in order to answer current research questions. This article discusses these issues in the context of the Leverhulme-funded project 'Beyond Walls: Reassessing Iron Age and Roman Encounters in Northern Britain'. The project utilized a broad range of existing and newly created data, drawn from a variety of sources across modern regional and national boundaries, to examine widereaching changes in late prehistoric to late antique settlement landscapes in northern Britain. Using this extensive range of data within a multi-scalar approach, the project has been able to assess settlement patterns and associated environmental evidence at a range of spatial and temporal scales, some preliminary examples of which are presented here.

It has so far been dated to the 5th-6th centuries. On the basis of stylistic arguments, this paper suggests that it should be attributed to the 4th century and that the king should be identified with Shāpūr II (309-379), depicted in his minority and wearing the crown of his father Hormizd II (302-309). This would be the earliest Sasanian royal plate depicting a reigning ruler. The image was intended to overshadow the intrigues and machinations of the nobility for the succession of Hormizd II, and perhaps to symbolically represent the first military operations of the young Shāpūr II against the Arabs.

Esta discusión se ilustra con el estudio de la colonización española de la costa patagónica a fines del siglo XVIII, en particular, el caso de la Nueva Población y Fuerte de Floridablanca (Bahía de San Julián, 1780-1784). El estudio de la reproducción y transformación social en Floridablanca se centró en los escenarios sociales no contemplados por la Corona española en su planificación colonial. El énfasis en las prácticas cotidianas en una escala pequeña permitió un abordaje a la tensión entre las categorías definidas desde el orden colonial y su puesta en práctica.

The study sample consisted of 168 grademiddle school students in Hail. They were randomly divided into two experimental groups; the first (N=56) students and the second (N=56), and a control group (N=56). The first experimental group was studied using Ausubel's model; the second experimental group was studied using the metacognitive strategy (K.W.L); and the control group was studied using the conventional method. The research tools used in this study is an achievement test and scale for mathematical communication. The results showed that there were significant differences in achievement for the first and the second experimental group compared to the control group. Hence, this demonstrates the effectiveness of these two methods in teaching. The results showed statistically significant differences in mathematical communication due to the teaching methods. In addition, the second experimental group outperformed the first experimental group and the control group. The results also showed a statistically significant difference between pre-administration and the postadministration in favor of the post-administration for the three research groups. Further recommendations were suggested for future research.

This study presents a forensic facial approximation based on data from a three-dimensional composite skull derived from Layer 7 of the site, with structural predominance of the Irhoud 1 fossil. The methodology employed open-source software tools, combining anatomical projections and the constrained anatomical deformation technique. Endocast segmentation yielded a volume of 1364 mL, a result fully compatible with measurements and segmentations obtained in previous studies directly from the fossil, while also aligning with the variation observed in modern populations. Two sets of images were produced: an objective approximation in grayscale, focused on osteological correspondence, and a colored artistic version featuring skin pigmentation and facial hair for scientific communication. The results reinforce the feasibility and reproducibility of open-access methodologies applied to paleoanthropology, offering an anatomically coherent representation of this Middle Pleistocene hominin. If the contractual agreement is invalid, there is given a so-called >condictio indebiti<, even if the translation of property is valid.-The acquisition of property in good faith is based on Roman law; the prinicple of acquisition in good faith protects the legal relations and postpones the interest of the (former) owner.-The relationships between the property owner and the unrightful possessor may be rather intricated, Roman law gives the answers. Roman law was the private international law that ruled the legal transactions of civil life. The European Union is on the way for more unification of civil law in its member states, but there is still a very long distance to go-the way is rather stony, because the member states are in some espects fixed on their own codified civil law. This way is stony, because there is no lingua franca in the European Union: The success of Roman law was based on the success of the Latin language, whose grammar, syntax and phonology is rather easy. Latin was the lingua franca of the ancient Europe, of the medieval Europe and in the further sequence up to the Enlightenment, whereas the European Union has as many official languages as it has member states. Nevertheless, the Latin language is not dead and the Roman law is not outdated.

By design, the survey treats value alignment, transparency, fairness, and accountability as relevant contexts rather than as core dimensions. This commentary advances a friendly amendment: accountability is not a peripheral dimension that can be deferred, but the binding constraint on agentic-AI trustworthiness. The reason it resists the survey’s stage-targeted, technical treatment is structural and temporal. Accountability mechanisms are deliberative and operate at human, institutional speed; agentic systems act autonomously, continuously, and at scale. This asymmetry—a governance lag—means that even a fully implemented suite of technical mitigations leaves a residual gap that only governance can close, while prevailing governance instruments remain calibrated to human-paced oversight. A complete trustworthiness agenda must therefore foreground accountability as a first-order design and governance problem.

Such systems boost the problem not only by increasing opportunities to create realistic AI-generated fake content, but also, and essentially, by facilitating the dissemination of disinformation to a targeted audience and at scale by malicious stakeholders. This situation entails multiple ethical and human rights concerns, in particular regarding human dignity, autonomy, democracy, and peace. In reaction, other AI systems are developed to detect and moderate disinformation online. Such systems do not escape from ethical and human rights concerns either, especially regarding freedom of expression and information. Having originally started with ascending co-regulation, the European Union (EU) is now heading toward descending co-regulation of the phenomenon. In particular, the Digital Services Act proposal provides for transparency obligations and external audit for very large online platforms' recommender systems and content moderation. While with this proposal, the Commission focusses on the regulation of content considered as problematic, the EU Parliament and the EU Council call for enhancing access to trustworthy content. In light of our study, we stress that the disinformation problem is mainly caused by the business model of the web that is based on advertising revenues, and that adapting this model would reduce the problem considerably. We also observe that while AI systems are inappropriate to moderate disinformation content online, and even to detect such content, they may be more appropriate to counter the manipulation of the digital ecosystem. Policy Significance Statement This study aims at identifying the right approach to tackle the disinformation problem online with due consideration for ethical values, fundamental rights and freedoms, and democracy. While moderating content as such and using AI systems to that end may be particularly problematic regarding freedom of expression and information, we recommend countering the malicious use of technologies online to manipulate individuals. As considering the main cause of the effective manipulation of individuals online is paramount, the business model of the web should be on the radar screen of public regulation more than content moderation. Furthermore, we do support a vibrant, independent, and pluralistic media landscape with investigative journalists following ethical rules.

Esta investigación pone el foco en esta problemática y el epicentro analítico en experiencias vitales de una mujer de la aristocracia virreinal en el Nápoles renacentista. En ese contexto las inquietudes de Isabel Briceño (Isabella Bresegna) la acercaron consciente y decididamente a posicionamientos y activismo cristiano reformista. Esto tensionó sus relaciones con la iglesia romana. Ese posicionamiento dejó una impronta que no pudo ser borrada por sus descendientes. Se constata aquí, además de la construcción de espacios de autoridad y agencia femenina, la transmisibilidad involuntaria de un patrimonio inmaterial cuya interpretación encontraba lógica y significación específica en una etapa de agudas querellas confesionales.

It has so far been dated to the 5th-6th centuries. On the basis of stylistic arguments, this paper suggests that it should be attributed to the 4th century and that the king should be identified with Shāpūr II (309-379), depicted in his minority and wearing the crown of his father Hormizd II (302-309). This would be the earliest Sasanian royal plate depicting a reigning ruler. The image was intended to overshadow the intrigues and machinations of the nobility for the succession of Hormizd II, and perhaps to symbolically represent the first military operations of the young Shāpūr II against the Arabs.

At the same time, advances in geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) are transforming the collection, analysis, and application of geospatial information for humanitarian responses. This paper presents a SALSA-based (Search, Appraisal, Synthesis, Analysis) integrative review examining the intersections of GeoAI, humanitarian action, environmental justice, infrastructure, and governance. Eighty publications, including twelve comprehensive review articles, were examined to identify major research themes, applications, and emerging challenges. The review demonstrates that Humanitarian GeoAI extends beyond technical innovation to encompass interconnected dimensions of infrastructure, analytical methods, humanitarian applications, and environmental justice, ethics, and governance. These findings are synthesized into a conceptual framework illustrating how geospatial infrastructures enable GeoAI methods, which support humanitarian applications and generate outcomes requiring ethical oversight and governance. The analysis identifies two cross-cutting challenges: the humanitarian–military dual-use dilemma, in which shared data, infrastructures, and analytical systems support both humanitarian and military objectives, and the privacy–safety dilemma, where efforts to protect vulnerable populations may simultaneously increase exposure to surveillance and harm. Future advances in autonomous GIS, generative artificial intelligence, and digital twins are likely to further reshape humanitarian practice. Between the 1830s and the beginning of the 20th century this attitude triggered a flood of mainly British books, private diaries and maps. Over time this enormous production, accompanied by a wide range of phenomena such as evangelical tourism, did instill the idea of a ‘meta-Palestine’, an imaginary place devoid of any history except that of Biblical magnificence. This has had various relevant consequences. The present article aims to deconstruct this perception by observing the process through which a local complex reality has been simplified and denied in its continuity.

The rise of modernity reinterpreted the Bible and the ancient Near East through the lenses of rationalism, secularism, and historicism within a Western framework still deeply shaped by its Christian roots. Driven by archaeology, philology, but also travel writing, all of which produced particular imaginative geographies of the Orient and protoethnographic descriptions of its peoples, this process generated new forms of knowledge that moved beyond religious memory towards a material and symbolic appropriation of the past. This article fleshes out how the Bible and the ancient Near East as intellectual traditions were transformed through different iterations of cultural memories which were created to support the West's narrative of its own origins, exploring how identity and otherness were negotiated and Westernized through this historical process.
