Mortimer L. Menpes was a dry-point etcher, painter of genre, architectural sujects, and writer; born in Australia (Adelaide), came to England in ca.1875 where remained. He exhibited at the RPE from 1882 to 1913 and 36 original etchings at the RA from 1880 to 1900.
Menpes was born February 28 1855 in Port Adelaide, not 1860 (a common mistake since Menpes himself promoted the later birth date). A copy of his birth certificate is in the Menpes artists file in the Art Gallery of South Australia library. He died in Pangbourne in 1938.
