Ephesus and the Amazons Remembering or Recreating the Early History of a Greek Polis in the 5th Century BC By Helene Blinkenberg Hastrup

https://www.academia.edu/35609035/Ephesus_and_the_Amazons_Remembering_or_Recreating_the_Early_History_of_a_Greek_Polis_in_the_5th_Century_BC This essay examines the "Amazon monument of Ephesus", because the “meaning” of prominent freestanding Greek monuments was often more explicit than the “meaning” of architectural sculpture. If we want to understand the ancient cityscapes we need to take these monuments into account and rekindle the interest in Roman copies of Greek monuments; not so much as evidence of Greek sculptural style but of the Greek visual landscape. Observations of the ultra-hot super-Earth TOI-561 b suggest that the exoplanet is surrounded by a thick blanket of gases above a global magma ocean. The results help explain the planet’s unusually low density and challenge the prevailing wisdom that relatively small planets so close to their stars are not able to sustain atmospheres.

In one month of observations spread across two years, the survey will unveil tens of billions of stars and explore previously uncharted structures. “The Galactic Plane Survey will revolutionize our understanding of the Milky Way,” said Julie McEnery, Roman’s senior project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “We’ll be able to explore the mysterious far side of our galaxy and its star-studded heart. Because of the survey’s breadth and depth, it will be a scientific mother lode.” The survey will cover nearly 700 square degrees along the glowing band of the Milky Way—our edge-on view of the disk-shaped structure containing most of our galaxy’s stars, gas, and dust. Scientists expect the survey to map up to 20 billion stars and detect tiny shifts in their positions with repeated high-resolution observations, and it will only take 29 days spread over the course of the mission’s first two years.

Two major historiographical lines converge in this exemplary work. The first relates to the reign of Philip III, one of the major protagonists in the renewal of studies on the Spanish monarchy over the last three decades. The second is devoted to Hispanic Portugal (1580-1640) in general and the Portuguese overseas territories in particular, another innovative line of research that has run parallel to the former. This process had yet to cover the Brazilian chapter, until recently mistakenly perceived as an area outside, or almost outside, the America of the Habsburgs. ...

HABITAR LAS CORPORALIDADES. CLAVES PARA TRASCENDER LA VULNERACIÓN By Carolina Irene Márquez Méndez

- I explore some of the ways in which the colonial legacy inhabits us through our relationship with our habitat, in this exercise of transcending it. Through the body, I have been able to construct a heartfelt reflection linked to genealogical and ethnographic experiences in urban, peripheral, and rural areas, where armed conflict occurs constantly or intermittently. Therefore, the purpose of this reflection is to broaden the conditions for developing our capacity to freely determine ourselves. As a student of these communities, I recognize their capacity for sustenance and enjoyment, where the way of life maintains a meaning deeply intertwined with extended corporealities (Márquez Méndez, 2016): bodies of water, the land and its fruits, the territory and its topography, fungi and the connections of the mycelium, the diversity of flora and fauna that, together with human plurality, make up the ecosystem. The body is where it is possible to appreciate the power of life, its resistance to devastation, and its orientation toward sustaining care. We can also account for its reverse side, when life is exposed to harm, through different material and symbolic modes of violation and multiple violence. ...

- This reflection can contribute to building criteria for moving towards relationships oriented towards the revaluation of life (Márquez, 2016). That is, the possibility of collectively sustaining concrete actions that contribute to genuine dignity; not merely declarative dignity. Having said this, we join the efforts for the political recognition of the diverse expressions of being trans. We decided to revisit a part of the problem linked to a violation we frame as trans-exclusion, which affects a diversity of bodies whose lives are routinely questioned, prejudiced, criminalized, brutalized, and even murdered. ...

Qur’ān By Petra Sijpesteijn

Despite Muhammad being illiterate, the Qur'ān was recited, memorized, and recorded, leading to its compilation under the third caliph Uthman. The text, considered inimitable, is integral to Muslim life, influencing language and culture, and ritualized recitation characterizes important moments in a believer's life. ...

Arabic language By Mohammed Mahbboob Hussain Aazaad

https://www.academia.edu/4565422/Arabic_language?nav_from=a5588a16-98b6-4acd-a187-2adedc6daa08 At the beginning of the 7th century, the Arabic language was a minor language confined to the Arabian Peninsula. To the north, Syriac, an Aramaic dialect, was spoken widely by the common people west of the Euphrates River. Greek and Latin were spoken by the Byzantine governing classes. It was only in 630 that the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius had exchanged Latin for Greek as his official language. East of the Euphrates, Aramaic, in Syriac or Assyrian dialect, was commonly spoken in what is now Iraq. Persian and some Greek were spoken by the rulers. But then, the Arab conquerors quickly spread their own language and replaced the native tongues. Arabic, a language that some have argued lends itself easily to overstatement, to polemic, is a major unifying factor in the present day Arab world, and a key to identity. Along with the religion, the language was historically a crucial element in the process of advancing Islamic culture. Then, as now, the manner of expression, as much as the meaning, was a distinctive Arab characteristic. And in the language lies much of today's Arab spirit of unity. ...

Language is a communication tool used by humans to interact with each other which on both sides knows or understands each other. In linguistics language is defined as an arbitrary sound system, which is used by members of a society to cooperate, interact, and identify (KBBI). Arabic is a language that exists in the arabian peninsula. This language is a language found in the holy book of Muslims, namely the Qur'an. The Arabic language itself has a very significant development. The Arabic language has a very complex development. Generally, people who lived in Arabia at the time of the Prophet shalallahu 'alaihi wa sallam were Arabic linguists they were people who would understand Arabic very well. The history of Arabic has made Arabic a language with a huge number of meanings. ...

The Miracle of Arabic Language: From Pre-Islamic To Islamization By Rahmat Hidayat

https://www.academia.edu/98992800/The_Miracle_of_Arabic_Language_From_Pre_Islamic_To_Islamization?nav_from=5c5e7dbc-1fe1-4f2a-bd8e-a0be6ca3e81d Language contributes greatly to human civilization. Among the world's major languages spoken by mankind is Arabic. Arabic influences many aspects of life, such as Roman civilization in many fields, even music and poetry. Jahiliyyah Arabic only serves as a literary language. But when Islam came, Arabic underwent a very significant development, becoming the language of science. This is what is meant by the process of Islamization. This study aims to explain the influence of Islam on Arabic. Therefore, through this paper it can be concluded that even though there are several Arabic terms that are the same as those used during the Jahiliyyah and the advent of Islam, basically they have different meanings and emphasis. Islam came to have an influence in facilitating the pronunciation of Arabic terms which were previously complicated or even providing new Arabic vocabulary that was not known during the Jahiliyya period. ...

It critiques two dominant narratives regarding Arabicization—the Marwanid caliphs’ systematic policies versus the earlier Umayyad context—arguing they fail to comprehensively explain the language’s success beyond its religious significance. By examining social identity, relations of power, and contextual factors, the chapter proposes a nuanced understanding of how Arabic emerged as a prestige language across diverse populations from Central Asia to Iberia. ...

Aloneness as Connector in Arabic Papyrus Letters of Request By Petra Sijpesteijn

https://www.academia.edu/145355196/Aloneness_as_Connector_in_Arabic_Papyrus_Letters_of_Request?email_work_card=title Amongst the thousands of papyrus and paper documents from medieval Egypt written in Greek, Coptic and Arabic there are a large number of letters of requests and petition letters. This chapter examines how the senders of these letters used the argument of being alone and helpless to persuade the letter’s recipient to undertake some action to help the petitioners. By presenting the petitioner as someone without friends, family or anyone else to help them, a relationship is created with the petitioned who can help based on the social and moral expectations that prevailed in early Islamic Egyptian society. ...

The Early Islamic Empire’s policy of multilingual governance By Petra Sijpesteijn

https://www.academia.edu/145354742/The_Early_Islamic_Empire_s_policy_of_multilingual_governance?email_work_card=title Explaining the process of Arabicization remains one of the main challenges in the study of the history of the early Muslim empire. Arabic was used immediately as a symbol of rule and authority in the areas conquered by the Muslims, and the use of Arabic increased over time. At the same time, the Muslim administration continued to produce and interact with documents in Coptic, Greek, Pahlavi, Latin, and Sogdian even centuries after the conquest. Other historical processes, such as personnel changes in the administration and the development of governance infrastructures, impacted language use and interfered with later accounts recording linguistic transformations in the caliphate’s chancery and beyond. Using documents from Egypt to Khurasan produced by the administrations of the Umayyads and the early ʿAbbāsids — that is to say, from the 640s to the mid ninth century ce — with a focus on the languages that these documents were written in and how these languages relate to each other, together with historical accounts and theoretical insights from empire studies, this chapter will examine the question of language use and language policy in the early Islamic empire as an element of the greater discussion about Arabicization. ...

Mechanisms of social dependency in the early Islamic Empire By Petra Sijpesteijn

https://www.academia.edu/145355157/Mechanisms_of_social_dependency_in_the_early_Islamic_Empire?email_work_card=title The success of Islamic imperialism in the period from the conquests to the Ayyubid dynasty has traditionally been explained as purely the result of military might. This book, however, adopts a bottom-up approach which puts social relationships and local power dynamics at the centre of the Islamic empire's cohesion. Its chapters draw on sources in diverse languages: not just Arabic, but also Greek, Coptic, Syriac, Hebrew, and Bactrian, showing how different linguistic communities intersected and contributed to a connected yet diverse empire. They highlight how not just literary and historical texts, but also physical documents and archaeological evidence should be incorporated into writing histories of the late antique and early medieval Middle East. Social institutions and relationships explored include oaths; petitions, decrees, and begging letters; and financial frameworks such as debt and taxation. ...

The Iberian Peninsula between 300 and 850 By Isaac Sastre de Diego

Given the sparse documentary evidence available, archaeology holds the key to a richer understanding of the developments of the period, and this book addresses a number of issues that arise from analysis of the available material culture, including questions of the process of Christianisation and Islamisation, continuity and abandonment of Roman urban patterns and forms, the end of villas and the growth of villages, and the adaptation of the population and the elites to the changing political circumstances. ...

Finding invisible arians: an archeological perspective on churches, baptism and religious competition in 6th century Spain. pp.675-686. In HORTUS ARTIUM MEDIEVALIUM - ISSN:1330-7274 vol. 23/2, 2017. By Alexandra Chavarria Arnau

The end of the century saw the conversion of arian goths to catholicism in the Third Council of Toledo (589). As written sources were extremely biased and influenced by the eventual outcome, the archaeology of churches is an essential tool for reconstructing this period of history in the iberian peninsula and particularly the religious and political competition between Arians and followers of the nicene creed. ...

Churches and aristocracies in seventh century Spain: some thoughts on the debate on visigothic churches, “Early Medieval Europe”, volume 18 issue 2, 2010, pp. 160-174. By Alexandra Chavarria Arnau

This article aims to present an analysis of the social and economic conditions of the seventh century (particularly the second half) as a background to understanding and defending the existence of church building in late Visigothic Spain. Their physical type (monumental but not enormous), the quality of their construction techniques and decoration, their function (absence of baptisteries and, often, presence of privileged burials) suggest aristocratic patronage of these buildings, an identification widely supported by textual and epigraphical evidence. ...

These finds, gathered in the course of many years of exploration (from 1945 to 1992) in the central part of the settlement, are kept in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. Only part of them was described and published while the bulk of the collection remains unpublished 1 . Most of the finds date back to the period from the last quarter of the 4th to the middle of the 3rd century BC. There are, however, some items from the second half of the 3rd to the first half of the 2nd century. Most of the represented shapes are fragmentary. ...

If we want to understand the ancient cityscapes we need to take these monuments into account and rekindle the interest in Roman copies of Greek monuments; not so much as evidence of Greek sculptural style but of the Greek visual landscape. Periplus to the Unknown. The Greek Conquest of the Black Sea and the Origin of the Amazon Myths By Arturo Sanchez Sanz

https://www.academia.edu/125667278/Periplus_to_the_Unknown_The_Greek_Conquest_of_the_Black_Sea_and_the_Origin_of_the_Amazon_Myths The aim of this paper is to address the colonisation of the Pontus in relation to the Amazon myths. An attempt will be made to clarify the difficulties in identifying both the initial contacts between the Greeks and the ancient steppe nomad peoples in that region and the origin of the Amazon myths on the basis of the apparently more egalitarian lifestyle of those societies 2. Similarly, the intention is to offer an explanation for the presence of iconographic pieces of an Amazon character in that liminal space. The Amazon kingdom, regardless of whether it has been located preferably in the southern Pontus or less frequently in its northern or eastern reaches, was undoubtedly connected with the Black Sea. Even though those myths are rooted in a time long before the period in which the region was colonised by the Greeks, they formed part of it, as occurred with many other accounts dealing with the Argonauts, Medea and so forth, with the mission of exploring those distant lands, bringing them closer to the Greek world and facilitating their control, as well as converting them into essential elements for identifying the 'other' and, by extension, Hellenic culture itself. ...

My focus will be the Norman expansion in the south of Italy and I will compare the image of the Norman soldier in different parts of the European continent, namely Italy, Normandy, and England. What role did the Norman “warlike nature”, energy (strenuitas), courage (corage), boldness (hardiesce), and valour (vaillantize) play in shaping the identity of these newcomers in Italy? I will also compare this with the figure of the Normans on the other side of the Adriatic and I will examine the ways in which Byzantine authors tried to build a comprehensive image of the “Frankish” military tactics and of the “Frankish” soldier as an individual warrior. Was the “Norman invincibility” really a myth? ...

The comparative method and the methodology of linguistic and literary criticism are equally applied. The interest is focussed on the conceptual notions that defined the perception of the Norman invaders by medieval men and, consequently, their cultural representation. In this way, mentalities and social values are revealed, and, thus, historians investigating political developments are offered a research tool for medieval historical sources. ...

The Image of the "Other" in Anne Komnene's Alexiad: The Case of Normans By Tomasz Pełech

https://www.academia.edu/30197096/The_Image_of_the_Other_in_Anne_Komnenes_Alexiad_The_Case_of_Normans The analysis of the image of the "Other" in Anne Komnene's Alexiad focuses on the portrayal of Normans, particularly through characters like Robert Guiscard and his son Bohemond. Guiscard is depicted as a tyrant, whose cruel tactics and relentless ambition pose a significant threat to the Byzantine Empire. His characterization offers a stark contrast to the figure of Alexios I, presenting the Normans as both terrifying and captivating. The narrative emphasizes the themes of power, identity, and conflict within the context of Byzantine self-perception against the backdrop of external adversaries. ...

The Dedication of Phialai after Trials at Athens by Metics and Citizens By Edward Harris

https://www.academia.edu/145322684/The_Dedication_of_Phialai_after_Trials_at_Athens_by_Metics_and_Citizens Thirty-four fragments of lists of phialai dedicated after trials by metics and citizens have been found at Athens. Many scholars (Wilamowitz, D. M. Lewis, D. Kamen et alii) have claimed that these bowls were dedicated after manumissions or after release from the duties of freed people. This essay shows that these views are untenable and proposes an analysis based only on the evidence of the inscriptions. ...

It highlights how the Church and its leaders contributed to the political order, social cohesion, and stability within the Visigothic society. The study argues that bishops not only influenced social norms and legal frameworks but were essential in maintaining governance, reflecting a unique interplay between ecclesiastical and secular authority. ...

Undulating Mud Brick Walls in Acient Pharaonic Egypt By Max Johann Beiersdorf

https://www.academia.edu/37670488/Undulating_Mud_Brick_Walls_in_Acient_Pharaonic_Egypt The undulating mud brick walls from the 7 th –4 th Century BC are among the largest buildings in the ancient Egyptian culture, apart from the famous pyramids of the Old Kingdom. While the monumental temples of this period have continuously been the subjects of research, the exterior walls built with mud bricks have only rarely been the focus of scientific studies. In terms of an architectural semantics, Egyptologists' research has so far mainly focussed on the ancient perception of the buildings and in doing so has assumed the existence of a link between the characteristic appearance of the walls and the ancient Egyptian mythology. Aspects in terms of historical building research as well as the structural analysis were, in contrast, much less examined and mostly only studied on the basis of isolated findings. As part of the project, numerous undulating walls were studied and documented during several fieldwork campaigns in cooperation with the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) since 2011. In the course of this work, the enclosure walls of Heliopolis and Elephantine could be examined in greater detail. This provided insights into the relationship between design and technological advantages. Built in alternate panels of concave and convex courses of mud brick, the sequence of construction could be accelerated by raising the concave panels first. The structural analysis of the walls allows the assumption, that the stability could be increased in conditions of permanent weight. Based on these observations it can be concluded that this construction technique brought essential structural benefits. The paper presents the archaeological fieldwork and illuminates the architecture and construction history of the individual buildings in more detail. Based on observations made from the enclosure wall of the temple of Atum-Re at Heliopolis, which was the largest temple complex in Ancient Egypt, the paper focuses on the organisation of construction work. ...

Heliopolis, Ägypten. Undulierende Umfassungsmauern der ägyptischen Spätzeit By Max Johann Beiersdorf

Approximately 100 m of this outer enclosure wall are rather well preserved to a height of 3 m. The architectural survey finished the documentation of 60 m and pursued a section on top of the outer enclosure wall to investigate the junction of two segments. Built in alternate panels of concave and convex courses of mud brick, the structural analysis of the walls allows to assume, that the stability could be increased in conditions of permanent weight. Based on these observations it can be concluded that this construction technique brought essential structural benefits. ...

Das Alte Ägypten. Band 3: Die Spätzeit By Dr. Michael E . Habicht

Psammetich I.
