This paper demonstrates the use and potential of quantitative SNA by means of one example. A network based on 75 documents from the Murašû archive is constructed in order to show a computational, automatic procedure, that demonstrates the potential value of quantitave SNA to cuneiform studies. ...

In our study of this territory, as well as following a chronological order, we distinguish between three well differentiated areas: the coastal strip of Baix Empordà and La Selva, the hinterland of Empúries, and the inland counties. This allows us to make a distinction between two different rates of development. In the first area, where development was earlier and more intensive, we find facilities (presses, amphora workshops) that were at the peak of their use during the period of Augustus and the 1st century and were mainly used for winemaking and amphora manufacture. Inland, in the towns of Emporiae and Gerunda, the pace was different, later and less intensive, but with more continuity. ...

Walking on the stones of years. Some remarks on the NW Iberian rock art By Ramon Fábregas Valcarce and Carlos Rodríguez Rellán

https://www.academia.edu/12963877/Walking_on_the_stones_of_years_Some_remarks_on_the_NW_Iberian_rock_art Over the last two decades, the traditional descriptive paradigm has given way to other views focusing on the relationship between petroglyphs and prehistoric landscapes, seeking to understand that artistic phenomenon in the framework of societies undergoing deep socioeconomic changes and increasingly altering their environment. We shall review, in the light of the last discoveries, aspects such as the chronology of the regional rock art, the audience it was meant to address or the archaeological context of the carved rocks. Going beyond the perception of the rock art as a mediating element, open to the different communities inhabiting the land, we might acknowledge its possible role as an active agent through which human groups would negotiate its own identity and association with the surrounding space. The relationship between petroglyphs and landscape would be a dialectic one, so that several factors could regulate the access and reading of the decorated panels, eventually restricting these to certain individuals or sectors of the communities. Lastly, the similarities with the rock art in other areas of Atlantic Europe may be just another example of the circulation along the seaways of goods, ideas and people at least from the early Neolithic. ...

Subsequent findings in other tombs, generally with corridor, raised to about a hundred the number of these images, usually made on boulders little or no modified by pecking, incision or polish. These figures -sometimes arranged in a row- have been usually recovered in the outer area of access to the orthostatic construction. Their precise chronology and parallels have been the subject of discussion since the first discoveries: a combination of regional traditions and influences from the peninsular south could explain the peculiar features of these cult objects, whose chronology could go back to the middle of the 4th millennium BC and extend to at least the beginnings of the IIIº. Key Words: Idols; NW Iberia; Megaliths; Passage-Graves; Neolithic; Copper Age. ...

From quantitative to qualitative and back again. The interplay between structure and culture and the analysis of networks in pre-modern societies By Johannes Preiser-Kapeller

Of course, these verdicts were not entirely unfounded, as Mustafa Emirbayer and Jeff Goodwin pointed out in 1994 in their influential paper on „Network Analysis, Culture, and the Problem of Agency“: “despite its powerful conceptualization of social structure, network analysis as it has been developed to date has inadequately theorized the causal role of ideals, beliefs, and values, and of the actors that strive to realize them; as a result, it has neglected the cultural and symbolic moment in the very determination of social action.” Although meanwhile various theoretical concepts and models of “relational sociology” have been developed , the cultural dimension is still underrepresented in many works of quantitatively oriented social and also historical network analysis. In this paper, I will present the explanatory value of some of these relational approaches to social reality for historical research and their combination with quantitative network analysis. For various case studies, the actual interplay between the structural and the cultural dimension of social, religious, economic, political or intellectual linkages between individuals, groups, communities, but also cultural concepts will be demonstrated. ...

The enlightened governments strengthened the positions of the Crown. From Madrid, reports and memorials reflected on patronage. Some brought back the memory of the relations between civil and spiritual authority to the beginnings of Christianity, promoting a broad reflection both on the right of patronage and on its diplomatic projections and on pastoral and missionary action. This research analyzes these testimonies and focuses on the analysis of the coadjutories with future succession that, together with the diocesan spoliations, vacant sees, prebends and dispensations, occupied a central part of the controversies, explaining the semantics of these debates. ...

The Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum. Archaeology, Reception, and Digital Reconstruction By Mantha Zarmakoupi

https://www.academia.edu/377982/The_Villa_of_the_Papyri_at_Herculaneum_Archaeology_Reception_and_Digital_Reconstruction?email_work_card=title The Villa of the Papyri is a unique archaeological site and has been very influential in the field of classical studies. The papyri (the only intact library to survive from Greco-Roman antiquity) and bronze sculptures found in the villa have contributed to our knowledge of the ancient world and the villa has become for us the “ideal model” of Roman luxury villa culture. This volume brings together papers delivered by experts in various fields addressing the cultural significance of this ancient site in its contemporary Roman context as well as its cultural reception from its discovery over two hundred and fifty years ago to the most recent excavations in the late twentieth century. They also explore the ways in which digital archaeology can assist our efforts to understand and investigate ancient sites. Topics treated include the Villa’s architecture, decoration, and content (i.e., wall-paintings, sculptures, and papyri); their reception since the 18th century; and the current state of knowledge based on the recent partial excavations in the Villa, presented here in English for the first time. Furthermore, the use of digital models of the Villa that incorporate the data from the new excavations and a discussion on the ways in which such models may be used for educational and research purposes are also presented. ...

Nodes, ties, and theories: Some Considerations on the Correlation between Historical Network Models and the Social Complexity of the Medieval Past By Johannes Preiser-Kapeller

https://www.academia.edu/145687825/Nodes_ties_and_theories_Some_Considerations_on_the_Correlation_between_Historical_Network_Models_and_the_Social_Complexity_of_the_Medieval_Past?email_work_card=title In the last twenty years, the number of studies applying historical network analysis has grown significantly, in part due to the general "boom" in the digital humanities (although network analysis pre-dates the "digital turn"). Yet how can manifold social interactions be modelled as ties and individuals as nodes in a network for the purpose of quantitative analysis? Many historians approach network analysis in the face of significant amounts of digital data primarily from a quantitative perspective, trying to master the concepts, the mathematics, and the software. But one may ask, how can we perceive the actual correlations between network models and graphs and the social realities of the past? The paper presents some theoretical frameworks for this purpose. First, it examines three of the most elaborate concepts in "relational sociology" by Harrison C. White, Bruno Latour, and Niklas Luhmann. Second, it concentrates on attempts to combine Luhmann's systems theory with network theory, and some implications for historical medieval network analysis are suggested. Finally, the main points are summed up. ...

Als Amerika der Schweiz den Käsekrieg erklärte. Das Gershwin-Musical "Strike Up The Band" von 1927 By Jakob Tanner

The story, written by George S. Kaufman, portrays an American cheese manufacturer who manages to get the US government to impose prohibitive import tariffs on foreign competitors. The cheese country of Switzerland acts up and imposes retaliatory tariffs – whereupon the US Armed Forces, under the leadership of the businessman, march into Swiss territory. In my “Magazin” essay, I paid tribute to Gershwin's attempt to confront the popular culture of the interwar period with important political issues. I discuss the obstacles this musical had to overcome on its way to Broadway in New York and show how it ended up in Switzerland more than 70 years later, at an inopportune time. Today, however, its significance is obvious. 1927 schrieb der US-amerikanische Komponist George Gershwin die Songs für ein Musical; sein Bruder Ira Gershwin steuerte die Texte bei. Studying pigments on painted plaster in Minoan, Roman and Early Byzantine Crete. A multi-analytical technique approach By brendan derham

https://www.academia.edu/7070791/Studying_pigments_on_painted_plaster_in_Minoan_Roman_and_Early_Byzantine_Crete_A_multi_analytical_technique_approach?rhid=37146162018&swp=rr-rw-wc-145582392&nav_from=4558db79-6812-411c-8504-98405cd6f0d3 Wall paintings spanning two millennia of Cretan painting history and technology were analysed in an effort to determine similarities and evolutions of painting materials and technology. A multi-technique approach was employed that combined the use of (a) laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Raman microspectroscopy, based on mobile instrumentation, appropriate for rapid, routine-level object characterization, and (b) non-destructive X-ray diffractometry (XRD), performed directly on the wall painting fragment, which provides detailed information on the minerals constituting the paint. Elemental analysis data obtained through LIBS were compared with molecular and crystal structure information from Raman spectroscopy and XRD. Cross-sections from selected samples were also investigated by means of optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled to micro-probe analysis and X-ray mapping that enabled identification of several mineral components of the paint confirming the results of the XRD analysis. In parallel, replica wall paintings, created with known pigments and binding media for reference purposes, were examined with optical microscopy and stain tested for organic materials. The overall study shows that the LIBS and Raman techniques offer key advantages, such as instrument mobility and speed of data collection and interpretation that are particularly important when dealing with on-site investigations. Thus, they are capable of providing important compositional information in an effective manner that enables quick surveying of wall paintings and permit targeted sample selection for further analysis by advanced laboratory techniques. Macroscopic examination, together with SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XRD analyses, has been employed for this purpose. Wall plaster from all sampled fragments was found to be made of a calcite binder mixed with different aggregates, including quartz sand, crushed shells, and ceramic inclusions. Compositional and microstructural analyses indicate that pigments were mixed with fine plaster powder. Plaster, mortar, and pigments of the analyzed stucco fragments were likely locally sourced, contributing to our understanding of regional practices in the southern Levant during the Seleucid period. https://carmel.haifa.ac.il/pdfviewer_2025-1/ ...

Truitt’s Medieval Robots: Mechanism, Magic, Nature and Art (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015). This excellent co-authored volume by Hans Henrik Lohfert Jørgensen, Laura Katrine Skinnebach and Henning Laugerud treats much the same subject matter, but approaches it from the methodological frame of animism, and is beautifully illustrated so that readers can see how the images, statues, machines, and other representations imitated life. ...

(Not so) Distant Mirrors: a complex macro-comparison of polities and political, economic and religious systems in the crisis of the 14th century By Johannes Preiser-Kapeller

https://www.academia.edu/512025/_Not_so_Distant_Mirrors_a_complex_macro_comparison_of_polities_and_political_economic_and_religious_systems_in_the_crisis_of_the_14th_century?email_work_card=title&li=0 In the “calamitous” 14th century, as Barbara Tuchman called it in her classic „A Distant Mirror“ (1978) , the medieval world entered a period of severe crisis in demography, economy, politics and religion. This crisis took hold in all regions, ranging from China in the East to England in the West. Even before the catastrophic pandemic of the Black Death (1346-1352), deteriorating climatic conditions had ended the period of demographic and economic expansion that began in the 10th century. The local and regional impacts and consequences of these general potentially crisis-laden conditions may have differed; outcomes ranged from actual societal collapse to the emergence of powerful new polities – while Byzantium´s power dwindled away, Hungary entered a period of strong rulership and external power in the reign of Louis I of Anjou (1342-1382), for instance. But these conditions provide a framework for global perspective on this period and allow us to use the 14th century-crisis as a field of “natural experiments of history”, as Jared Diamond and James A. Robinson have called them ; accordingly, we analyse how similar crisis phenomena influenced the development of societies with different (or similar) traditions, religions, institutions, geographies or ecologies. In order to be able to capture the local variations and complexities, we adopt concepts and tools provided by the field of complexity science. Mono-causal or linear explanations are inadequate for the analysis and the description of crisis, transformation or collapse of pre-modern polities. Within this framework, complex systems are understood as large networks of individual components, whose interactions at the microscopic level produce “complex” changing patterns of behaviour of the whole system on the macroscopic level. In the last decades, historians and social scientists who became interested in complexity theory tried to use its concepts and terminology for the conceptualisation and description of phenomena in their own fields, but often only in a “metaphoric” way. Less frequently, though, historians have tried to make use of the mathematical foundations of complexity theory or of quantitative tools provided by this field. Recent scholarship has implemented some of these tools especially for the construction of macro-models of socio-economic development. While these studies help us construct analytical tools for the macro-level of our own research, they run the same risk as earlier scholarship of neglecting complex variations at the local and regional levels. Therefore, we combine complexity theory with the analytical framework of „systems theory“ developed by the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann in order to capture the interveawements between politics, economy and religion within a polity and with the political, economic and ecological environment. In addition, we employ the methods and tools of network analysis, which allow us to capture, analyse and model linkages and cause-effect correlations in society, economy, politics and religion on the macro- and micro-level down to groups and individuals. Overall, as a complement to earlier studies our analytical approach shall allow us to capture the “diversité véritable” of our period without losing track of essential commonalities (the “strange parallels”, as Victor Liebermann has called them in his remarkable study on Southeast Asia in Global Context, 2009 ) of this “first world crisis” across all cultures and societies. The scientic value of this approach will be demonstrated for some specific cases. ...

Eugenics before 1945 By Jakob Tanner

https://www.academia.edu/7542029/Eugenics_before_1945?email_work_card=title Eugenics before 1945 An appropriate understanding of eugenics before 1945 implies that this break is questioned and put into perspective. The article conceives eugenics as a multifarious project of modernity that derived from the biopolitical aspiration to improve public health and enhance human capabilities. Consequently, it was supported across the political spectrum. In the course of the Twentieth Century, an international eugenics movement took shape and found widespread and transnational resonance in the public opinion. However, the conflation of the Aryan myth, racial purity and medical coercive measures in Nazi-Germany discredited the concept of eugenics after 1945. Nonetheless, such measures, often combined with elements of soft coercion, were applied in many countries, particularly in the U.S., the Scandinavian countries and Switzerland up to the 1970s. Meanwhile, the feasibility of Reproductive Medicine gave rise to a «liberal eugenics» which is entrenched in the promises of health and happiness descending from the Nineteenth Century. ...

Among other things, Cameron remarked that "Byzantium has been caught between the hostile, or at least prejudiced, assumptions of some classically trained scholars and the national and religious agendas of Greek and other Orthodox writers". 1 This statement points to the multiple challenges that research on the so-called Byzantine Empire faced in the ...

The insignificance of 1204 and 1453 for the history of Byzantine literature, Medioevo Greco 20 (2020) 1-58 By Panagiotis Agapitos

https://www.academia.edu/44423529/The_insignificance_of_1204_and_1453_for_the_history_of_Byzantine_literature_Medioevo_Greco_20_2020_1_58?rhid=37145989772&swp=rr-rw-wc-145523472&nav_from=1daeb2f3-447c-47c9-a59d-e8a44302a15e The present paper proposes a new periodization model for the history of Byzantine literature between the 11th and the 15th century. The paper examines first the use of the historical model in the periodization schemata of various overviews of Byzantine literature along with the essentialist and teleological concepts inherent in this model. Two further sections present the arguments concerning the insignificance of 1204 and 1453 for a literary history of Byzantium because both dates did not leave a visible imprint on the way people wrote after the disasters had occured, while their presence as historical markers of an abrupt end obscures the continuities and the important changes that took place around them. In two last sections the paper offers two new boundaries that are not instantaneous moments in history but fluid and broad segments of time in its unbroken stream. The years around 1050 and 1350 are marked by a series of changes in the way logoi were perceived both in school and in actual practice, and it is, therefore, proposed that Byzantine literature from the eleventh century onwards is shaped by two fluid periods: 1050-1350 and 1350-1500. ...

The Routledge Handbook of Rewriting in Byzantium By Inmaculada Pérez Martín

https://www.academia.edu/145523472/The_Routledge_Handbook_of_Rewriting_in_Byzantium The Routledge Handbook of Rewriting in Byzantium presents an overview of the various rewriting processes involved in the production of Byzantine literature. Due to the lack of recent systematic research on the totality of Byzantine literature, which embraces a long millennium of texts, the fluid concept of 'rewriting', here studied for the first time in all its complexity, serves as a unifying criterion for understanding the literary task of the Byzantines. Literature in Byzantium went well beyond the problems of language and genre and was adapted according to the audience and the expectations of the readers, which varied greatly in di!erent periods. With contributions from 25 scholars, this book analyses and discusses a variety of topics, including the rewriting of the past, modes of persuasion as a driving force behind rewriting, changing muses, the adaptation of hagiography to changing patterns of behaviour, updating of technical texts, and the necessity for theological and philosophical reinterpretation of inherited texts. This book will appeal to students and scholars alike interested in Byzantine literature, culture, and literary methods. ...

Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology - United Kingdom Conference (Edinburgh, 2023) - Abstracts By João Vinícius Chiesa Back

https://www.academia.edu/110280669/Computer_Applications_and_Quantitative_Methods_in_Archaeology_United_Kingdom_Conference_Edinburgh_2023_Abstracts?rhid=37145938207&swp=rr-rw-wc-93841624&nav_from=d2cf2a74-6ac7-450c-b158-243aeaf40fa0 The present proposal is based on the extroversion of the archaeological heritage of the University Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (MUAE/UFRGS) through the creation and use of 3D digital simulations of archaeological artifacts related to the Ancient History of Indigenous South America (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, is known for having been one of the main targets of an intensive European immigration project (mainly Germans and Italians) carried out during the Empire of Brazil (1822-1889) and the First Brazilian Republic (1889- 1930) between the 19th and 20th centuries. This phenomenon obscured, at least in part, the history of the indigenous peoples settled in the region before, during, and after this period. Considering this, this paper highlights the history of the formation of the museum's archaeological and ethnographic collection, as well as previous theoretical and practical experiences related to Digital Archaeology. Finally, it showcases potential uses of Mobile Augmented Reality through a Public History product aimed at disseminating part of the museum's archaeological collection (six artifacts attributable to indigenous peoples from different regions of the mentioned context from periods prior to European colonization) to the general public and explores discussions carried out by History, Museology, and Archaeology, delving into cyber-archaeology and digital humanities. The aforementioned digital (re)constructions were created using 3D modeling software, specifically Blender 3.4., and have contributed to increased socialization, dissemination and appreciation of the communicative potential of the collection. ...

Accessibility to excavated archaeological sites and monuments is often hindered for reasons of preservation or urban development. Portable finds are transferred and, in some cases, exhibited in local museums, but the non-portable remains of ancient structures become eventually effaced from the landscape and the collective memory of local communities. The Smart Eye app provides an "x-ray" type view of excavation sites that have been backfilled and are now invisible. While common practice in heritage sites' digital dissemination to the general public uses 2D or 3D reconstructions in augmented or virtual reality environments, the Smart Eye app presents archaeological remains in the shape and form they were found in by archaeologists supplemented with augmented reality markers that provide simplified textual and visual information aimed toward a non-scholarly public. The aim is to reinstate these heritage sites into the interactive relationship that people have with their landscape and their history. The present paper discusses the chaîne-opératoire of developing the app, from the acquisition of primary documentation data of the excavation sites to the methodology used for the production of the 3D models of the archaeological sites and the development of the app itself and the technical equipment used. Finally, we discuss the results of the preliminary evaluation of the application and future steps to improve it before final testing by the local communities where the archaeological sites are located. ..

POMPEII AND HERC CONSERVATION By Louisa Stocks

Shifted viewpoints in Knowledge/ understanding in Pompeii and Herculaneum include the widening understanding of the diet of people in the region through carbonised seeds and nuts, improved knowledge of the Nature of the Volcanic eruption through volcanology and various scientific developments and the causes of death in Pompeii and Herculaneum through examining skeletal remains. For each area, explain why or how our knowledge/ understanding has changed (1 reason per area) The knowledge about the diet in Pompeii was originally limited to the visual remains of frescos and mosaics, especially the one in the House of Faun, include depictions of fruit, nuts and water. However through differing archaeological practices such as the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy on carbonised materials and pollen analysis have allowed a more precise identification of various other foods such as meat, grains and vegetable such as peas and lentils. Through volcanology, people have also been able to cement ancient sources such as Pliny regarding the nature of the volcanic eruption, who's history of the eruption had been discredited previously, however, through the recognition of pyroclastic flows distinct from lava eruptions has changed the view of Pliny's unreliability and Pliny is now recognised as presenting a reliable recount of the eruption. As for the Causes of death regarding the eruption, asphyxiation was the central belief of deaths due to the large amount of ash fall during the eruption. through the cast method about 50 skeletons have been examined from the second stage of the eruption and has resulted in a review of the cause of death which is now identified as thermal shock because of the pugilistic pose, a contraction of the body muscles as a reaction to temperatures of about 200 degrees Celsius. Describe 3 specific examples (not ones already stated), How modern technology has contributed to improving our understand of life in the Cities of Vesuvius Technology has been invaluable of uncovering further and rediscovering certain aspects of the Cities of vesuvius. Examples include 3D lazer scanning technology in order to uncover further about the economic aspects of Pompeii and Herculaneum. 3D lazer scanning has been valuable in the identification of repairs to walls which aren't visible to the naked eye. this has caused a re-evalution of the economic status of Pompeii at the time, which had originally thought to have been in decline, however the technology introduced, contrasted that and proved it was flourishing economically wise The Pompeii Forum project for example, has used this technology. Another example is Skeletal examination. It is mainly used through the usage of DNA extracted from the teeth as a means of identifying key data of the age and genus of human remains. The usage of this technology has further been able to dispel misconceptions such as the new breed of horse thought to be found in Herculaneum, revealed to be a donkey. Lastly, infrared photography. Infrared technology is used to provide additional information relating to what humans can see on the surface with the naked eye. It can be used on the various frescoes and mosaics, to see beneath the layers of the paint. It was used explicitly in the House of The Vestals. All of these aspects and technologies combined affect the ability to understand the ancient aspects of the Cities of Vesuvius. Moreover, The culmination of 3D lazer scanning, Skeletal examination, infrared photography and other technologies, work together to reveal pivotal aspects of People in history, the way they worked and the effects of the eruption, due to the new information and research that they bring about, and this widely alters, and improves the interpretation of Pompeii and Herculaneum. ...

The Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum. Archaeology, Reception, and Digital Reconstruction By Mantha Zarmakoupi

https://www.academia.edu/377982/The_Villa_of_the_Papyri_at_Herculaneum_Archaeology_Reception_and_Digital_Reconstruction The Villa of the Papyri is a unique archaeological site and has been very influential in the field of classical studies. Furthermore, the use of digital models of the Villa that incorporate the data from the new excavations and a discussion on the ways in which such models may be used for educational and research purposes are also presented. ...

Hermogenes and Hellenistic-Roman Temple Building By Mantha Zarmakoupi

https://www.academia.edu/145611729/Hermogenes_and_Hellenistic_Roman_Temple_Building Recent major excavations at a variety of sites associated with Hermogenes have refreshed, invigorated, and refined our understanding of this important Hellenistic architect. Here, in the first volume dedicated to Hermogenes in more than two decades, new evidence and multivocal analysis allow for fresh contextualization, offering new insights into ancient Greek and Roman architecture and the sociopolitical factors that informed it. Hermogenes remains one of the most influential and famous designers of the Hellenistic world, although he is known primarily via the first-century BCE Roman architect Vitruvius, who credited his Greek predecessor with major accomplishments. Despite his comparative fame, the paucity of sources has nevertheless obscured Hermogenes’ legacy. This volume updates the evidence, reevaluates this highly significant figure, and recontextualizes crucial innovations in the ancient Greek world—innovations that continue to be influential today. ...

Este rom. boier un cuvânt împrumutat? By Sorin Paliga

https://www.academia.edu/145478285/Este_rom_boier_un_cuv%C3%A2nt_%C3%AEmprumutat Is boier 'boyar' a borrowed word? According to a persistent, but entirely unfounded, hypothesis Rom. boier-together with its related forms in Albanian, South Slavic, Russian and even Lithuanianwould reflect a Pre-Ottoman Turkic influence related to a root bay-'elevated, high, long'. The historical and linguistic data do not support this hypothesis. Rom. boier is, in fact, an internal evolution based on bou, pl. boi 'ox' (also bull), just like oaie, pl. oi 'sheep'-oier 'shepherd'. A boier was initially an 'owner of cattle', therefore a 'rich man'. The association 'owner of cattle, owner of herds'-'rich man' is obvious in the relation Lat. pecu, pecus 'herd, flock; cattle, sheep; money'-pecuniosus 'rich, wealthy'-pecunia 'money, property'. This situation, well recorded in the classical Roman society and reflected in the Latin language, explains how bos, bovis, in postclassical Latin *bovus, resulted in Rom. bou, hence, by the same association 'owner of cattle' = 'rich, wealthy man', further the largely spread term boier. Its distribution on a large area (southeast Europe, Russia, even Lithuania) shows that the term must have been consolidated its position before the 10th c. A.D., already in East Romance. There are traces that the same word was used in West Romance as well, as proved by the French personal name Boyer, of the same origin and, initially, with the same meaning: 'owner of cattle'. The Occitan Cathar song Lo boièr (French Le bouvier, English The herdsman) is another proof that the word has been preserved in West Romance as well, but without the meaning 'rich man', which developed in East Romance only. The area of the Eastern Roman Empire is the source of the word, later spread on a large area, reaching Medieval Rus' and the Baltic area. Historical, linguistic and heraldic data concur to this conclusion. The hypothesis that boier is a Pre-Ottoman Turkic influence should be finally abandoned. It is not supported by any serious argument. Note. This article is an updated version of the original study Este boieria o instituție împrumutată (Is boyardom a borrowed institution?), ...

On-chip coupling and synchronization of quantum emitters using superradiant coupling channels Roman Shugayev* [1]

https://www.academia.edu/3064-979X/2/4/10.20935/AcadQuant8025 Superradiance offers an efficient approach for coupling discrete quantum emitters via collective fluorescence. In this work, we suggest a method for the controlled coupling and synchronization of distant integrated photonic emitters using superradiance. Our theoretical modeling and analysis using electromagnetic and Master Equation methods for a case of nanodiamond/SiN heterogenous photonic platform confirms efficient superradiant coupling of distant emitters and a good degree of spurious emission isolation. This approach can offer a path to the scalable generation of multipartite photonic states, such as NOON states, and can enable efficient cluster state generation and one-way quantum computing approaches.

Behavioural nudges in circular economy transitions: evidence and gaps from urban consumption systems Williams Chibueze Munonye* [1] , Princess Sharon Munonye [2] , Daniella Ifunanya Munonye [3] , Obey Akinmorin Akinloye [4]

https://www.academia.edu/2997-6006/2/4/10.20935/AcadEnvSci7946 Urban sustainability requires innovative approaches that simultaneously address resource efficiency, waste reduction, and behavioural change. This study critically examines the role of behavioural nudges in promoting circular economy practices within urban contexts, synthesising insights from behavioural economics, industrial ecology, and urban governance literature. The research highlights how choice architecture, defaults, and framing can influence urban residents’ consumption and disposal behaviours, particularly in waste management, repair initiatives, and resource recovery programmes. Case studies from diverse municipal contexts illustrate both the potential and limitations of nudges, emphasising that short-term behavioural shifts do not automatically translate into long-term environmental gains. Quantitative evidence on resource savings, waste reduction rates, and behavioural persistence underscores the need for system-level integration, linking nudges with infrastructure, policy, and financial incentives. Importantly, the study identifies critical research gaps, including underexplored cultural contexts, vulnerable populations, and a lack of longitudinal impact assessments, which constrain scalable, equitable interventions. The analysis concludes with policy recommendations for designing integrated nudge systems embedded within urban planning, emphasising participatory design, equity, and sustainability metrics. This was achieved by combining behavioural insights with circular economy principles. The study provides a framework for evidence-based interventions that enhance urban resource efficiency, foster pro-environmental behaviour, and support the transition toward resilient and inclusive cities. This research contributes to both academic knowledge and practical policy by outlining pathways for sustainable, long-term urban transformation.

Why urban greening requires more than just species biodiversity Ángel Enrique Salvo-Tierra* [1] , Ángel Ruiz-Valero [1]

https://www.academia.edu/2997-6006/2/4/10.20935/AcadEnvSci7981 Over the past decades, a noticeable shift has taken place in the relationship between humans and nature. There is a growing interest in re-naturalizing urban environments by increasing vegetation cover as a means to foster more resilient cities and enhance environmental comfort for urban dwellers. Numerous policy recommendations emphasize vague targets such as increasing urban biodiversity or expanding tree canopy cover. While these indicators are indeed relevant and contribute to ecosystem service provision, they remain insufficient as standalone goals, failing to account for the complexity of factors involved in the design and planning of green urban infrastructure. This article places particular emphasis on the role of trees as the core unit of green infrastructure. Other vegetative strata, such as herbaceous layers or vertical greening systems, are acknowledged but regarded as secondary or complementary to tree-based systems. We highlight the conceptual ambiguity surrounding terms like “biodiversity” or “canopy increase” and argue that these metrics, although widely used, must be subordinated to a more integrative and function-driven planning paradigm. Urban forestry strategies should not aim merely to boost biodiversity indices but rather to develop evidence-based planting proposals that consider plant functional traits, optimize ecosystem service delivery, minimize disservices, and ensure species selection aligns with future climate conditions. This also involves maximizing genetic diversity, conducting detailed assessments of below-ground conditions (soils), as well as canopy height and diameter class structures, to enhance resilience against pests and diseases. Furthermore, spatial distribution must be planned to ensure justice and equity across socioeconomic groups. Ultimately, fulfilling all these criteria is likely to result in more biodiverse urban forests, but this diversity will be the consequence of well-defined, objective, and scientifically grounded decisions, rather than an arbitrary increase in a metric whose optimal threshold remains undefined. The goal is not simply more biodiversity, but smarter, functionally informed biodiversity.

Modelling drivers of environmental sustainability in artisanal gold mining within river basins using the Ecological Footprint Theory Dickson Okoree Mireku* [1] , Kwame Ofori [2]

https://www.academia.edu/2997-6006/2/4/10.20935/AcadEnvSci8056 The sustainability of gold mining practices, particularly among artisanal miners, has garnered increasing attention due to its environmental and social implications. However, limited empirical research has explored the nuanced factors influencing sustainable practices in gold mining areas. This study examined the roles of Awareness and Education, Future Mining Considerations, and Social Impact Perceptions in shaping Continuous Mining Intentions and their subsequent impact on Environmental Sustainability in Mining Practices. Using a quantitative approach, data from 271 artisanal gold miners were analysed through Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The study found that Continuous Mining Intentions was the main factor significantly and positively predicted Environmental Sustainability in Mining Practices of artisanal miners. Additionally, Awareness and Education significantly predicted both Continuous Mining Intentions and Future Mining Considerations of artisanal gold miners. These results highlight the critical role of awareness, education, and social considerations in promoting sustainable mining practices. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to enhance environmental sustainability in artisanal mining and suggests pathways for integrating education and social awareness into mining policies and programmes.

Machine learning suggests climate and seasonal definitions should change under global warming Milton Speer* [1] , Lance Leslie [1]

https://www.academia.edu/2997-6006/1/3/10.20935/AcadEnvSci7419 Extreme and unseasonal temperature and precipitation events have increased worldwide. The greater frequency and variability of floods, heatwaves, and droughts challenge traditional definitions of climate periods as 30-year means. Machine learning (ML) studies, focusing on southern Australia, identified the dominant attributes of these precipitation and temperature events. The attributes are both local and remote climate drivers, amplified by global warming. Their impacts include longer, hotter warm seasons and shorter, drier wet seasons in Australia’s southern Mediterranean climate regions. In contrast, flooding has increased in coastal eastern Australia. The poleward contraction of mid-latitude westerly winds is a readily identifiable contributor. Improvements in climate models are expected to more accurately predict future phases of climate drivers. Because global warming is not uniform across the Earth’s surface, the revised definitions of climate will vary by region. In this work, we chose one clear example that supports the need for re-considering climate periods.

This paper contextualizes climate change in the Southeast Asian region. The region is highly exposed to natural disasters and greatly vulnerable to changes in the climate. Warming in the region is projected to be similar to the global mean. Increases in frequency of extreme events are also to be expected. Being a dominantly developing region, adaptation and mitigation strategies are not at the same level as those in the developed world. ...

Climate Change and Its Impact on Cultural Shifts in East and Southeast Asia By Duy Trần

https://www.academia.edu/65110666/Climate_Change_and_Its_Impact_on_Cultural_Shifts_in_East_and_Southeast_Asia?nav_from=e32b95a3-a8f1-4807-ba0d-eec4442e6bf1 Predictions warn that the annual mean warming across land in Asia will be approximately 3 • C (5.4 • F) in the 2050s and about 5 • C (9 • F) by the 2080s. Water surface temperatures are projected to increase 2 to 4 • C (3.6 to 7.2 • F). This region will experience more heat waves, heavy precipitation events, and cyclones than the present. Characteristics that make this region particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change are a high rate of poverty that spans across many Asian countries, the susceptibility towards endemic illnesses, and increasingly dense populations that reside along coastlines and low-lying areas. This chapter focuses on four countries in South and Southeast Asia: Cambodia, China, Philippines, and Vietnam, each with characteristics that make them susceptible to climate change. Cambodia has a high rate of poverty and an agricultural sector that is climate dependent. China is seeing a rapid and massive migration from inland to coastal areas as well as urbanization. The Philippines is an archipelago. The country is not well equipped to respond to effects of climate change partly due to its geography as well as such factors as poverty and poor infrastructure. Like China, 74 % of the population in Vietnam is concentrated along the coastal plains and river deltas with an equally large urban population distributed in low lying areas. How will the Asian population react to the impact(s) of climate change on the physical environment (e.g., food production and water resources, ecosystem degradation, and coastal regions) that have a direct influence on their livelihood and culture? Projection of cultural shift rests on key and significant ...

Call for Papers conference Past and Present Impact of Climate Change in Southeast Asia, Bangkok, July 2-3, 2026 By Paul Erdkamp

The conference will explore the dynamic interplay between climate change and human societies in Southeast Asia, from the start of the Common Era to the present day. As Southeast Asia faces the growing impacts of climate change, this conference aims to investigate both historical and contemporary strategies of adaptation and mitigation. The concept of societal collapse, often invoked in historical narratives, risks oversimplifying the diverse and complex processes that shape societal responses to environmental pressure. Terms such as resilience, vulnerability, and coping strategies have become central to current climate discussions but are frequently used without adequate specificity. By examining the past, we can gain a deeper understanding of these concepts, offering valuable insights that may inform contemporary approaches to addressing the effects of climate change. The conference welcomes papers that address a wide range of themes, including (but not limited to): the impact of climate variability and change on food systems; historical and modern coping strategies; institutional resilience and failure; environmental stress and social inequality; and the broader economic, cultural, and political consequences of climate change in Southeast Asia. We aim to bring together scholars from a wide range of disciplines, including history, archaeology, anthropology, historical geography, environmental science, paleoclimatology, and related fields. ... https://www.academia.edu/145585680/Call_for_Papers_conference_Past_and_Present_Impact_of_Climate_Change_in_Southeast_Asia_Bangkok_July_2_3_2026?email_work_card=title

Relationship with place: a transformative and sustainable pedagogy for the planet Julie Singleton* [1]

https://www.academia.edu/2997-6006/1/1/10.20935/AcadEnvSci7269 The central hypothesis of this conceptual commentary is that place-based educational approaches that use local environments as the learning context could not only provide needed educational reforms but also sow the seeds of sustainable behaviors of future generations. Furthermore, natural environments are offered as an optimal context for the emotional and sensory-rich needs of learning experiences that transform eco-paradigms and develop land ethics. The supporting literature examines the nexus of environmental education, place-based approaches, benefits of nature experience, and transformational learning. Breaking barriers of current economic, political, and educational institutions requires integrative approaches—head, hand, and heart—to transform eco-paradigms. A conceptual diagram is offered to visualize this holistic approach. The rich context of a natural place enhances the esthetic quality of a learning experience and is dependent on the relationships within the community of learners, sensory interaction with the learning context or place, the emotion that arouses, thoughts derived from reflection on the experience, and the depth of engagement and behavior change that ensues. I support the power of place as a learning context through personal narrative. Although place-based education can be applied in any community and educational setting, I offer my own cultural perspective as an American with a critique of the consumer culture of the place in which I reside and the effect of rigid institutions on eco-values. Place-based educational reforms could develop caring for local environments leading to young people striving to preserve the places in which they have learned and come to care about.

The education irony: when college degrees lead to unemployment, mindless thinking, debt, and despair Hershey H. Friedman* [1]

https://www.academia.edu/2997-9196/2/2/10.20935/MHealthWellB7661 Education’s role extends beyond job preparation; it should equally nurture students’ moral character, compassion, and civic duty. This essay argues that many higher education institutions fall short of their educational responsibilities. Instead of producing well-rounded individuals with strong ethical principles, critical thinking abilities, and job-ready skills, some schools may inadvertently stifle creativity and discourage open debate. The author suggests that a limited focus on particular ideological views and an overemphasis on identity politics can restrict students’ exposure to diverse perspectives. Rather than becoming adept at logical reasoning, students have become proficient in harmful binary thinking and pathological dualism—a mindset that is likely to lead to misery.

It also discusses the point made by Hossein Nasr that the absence of the Scientific Revolution in Islam is in a sense a blessing because its rejection of Greek natural philosophy-seen to be essential for the rise of modern science-implied the preservation of Islamic metaphysics. The article continues by discussing the counter-factual question of whether it would have been better for Islamic science to go the way of Western science, or that what had historically happened was indeed the best choice for Islamic civilization. The article ends by looking at the relevance of the above issue to the contemporary practice of science in Islam, especially with respect to epistemology. ...

Almost the whole discourse sustains its validity and relevance from a strong scientific realist stance that is the de facto position within this discourse. However, going by the Sunnī epistemological standards, since only conclusive or certain knowledge (ilmqat'ī or yaqīnī) counts as proof (burhān) in Sunnī theology (kalām), scientific knowledge due to its layers of theoretical presuppositions, is probable and limited; a claim also substantiated by the history and philosophy of science. Scientific propositions cannot be beneficial for theological pursuit such as knowing and appreciating divine attributes or used as a basis for either affirming or questioning and reinterpreting scriptures. In the current Muslim discourse on Islam and modern science, uncritical, unacknowledged, and undefended acceptance of scientific realism has led to the unwarranted use of modern scientific knowledge for such theological and religious purposes ...
