The new approaches on the part of archaeologists who focus on contexts (political, social, religious) provide fresh ground for interpretation as more and more humanities disciplines engage with visual culture. The aim of the collection of individual studies assembled here is to demonstrate how Classical Athenian art remains a vital field not just for art historians and archaeologists, but for ancient historians, political and social scientists, anthropologists, and those in religious studies as well. Now as new material comes to light and fresh ideas on old topics are being formulated, it is timely to re-investigate the art generated in the age of Perikles and its aftermath, the Peloponnesian War. This new research is presented here in the hope that upcoming generations of students and scholars will gain a deeper understanding of this seminal period of Greek art and architecture. The five decades (449 to 403 B.C.) covered by this volume begin with the putative "Peace of Kallias", probably an invention of the 4 th century B.C., and end with the demise of Kritias, a pro-Spartan intellectual who ended his political career as one of the notorious Thirty Tyrants. This book comprises the papers presented at the international conference "From Kallias to Kritias. Classical Culture: Athens in the Second Half of the 5 th Century B.C.", hosted in Athens by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens on June 6-8, 2019. The conference followed chronologically in the footsteps of "From Hippias to Kallias: Greek Art in Athens and Beyond 527-449 B.C.", 1 hosted by the Acropolis Museum in May 2017. That conference explored the debates concerning the last manifestations of the Archaic and the emergence of the Early Classical style. This volume, like its predecessor, raises important new issues, triggered by ongoing research on old and new excavation material, by probes into museum storerooms, and by the reshuffling of traditional premises. Bibliographical abbreviations follow the guidelines of American Journal of Archaeology. Abbreviations of ancient authors can be found in the Oxford Classical Dictionary. This area was probably always used as an open courtyard, with few and small structures with the only exception of a big mud-brick wall in east-west direction, probably the northern limit of the sanctuary area in the 6th century B.C. The evidence recovered gives indications about the presence of early archaic and Geometric layers, which should be investigated by future excavations. ...

Found through the use of a metal detector in 2021, the container measures 7 cm in height and 5 cm in diameter. It was handed over in accordance with regulations to the Neamț County Directorate for Culture, which deposited it in the heritage collection of the “Ștefan cel Mare” County Museum in Vaslui. Although many examples of this type of koutrouvion have been found south of the Danube, the Gâdinți ampoule represents a unique discovery for Romania. It most closely resembles a specimen uncovered during archaeological investigations in 1974 at the Stalać Fortress in Serbia. The location where the Romanian specimen was discovered may help explain its presence. Koutrouvia are predominantly associated with military sites, and this example was found near Smeredovo Fortress, which, translated from Slavic, means “Fortress of St. Demetrius”. It was built by Voivode Ștefan cel Mare (1457–1504) at the assembly point for the troops of the Principality of Moldavia ...

"Judaizing the Nations: The Ritual Demands of Paul's Gospel." By Paula Fredriksen

https://www.academia.edu/15573598/_Judaizing_the_Nations_The_Ritual_Demands_of_Pauls_Gospel_ The paper explores the relationship between ethnic distinctiveness and religious practices in the context of Paul's Gospel, particularly focusing on how these ideas influenced early Christian thought. It argues that both Paul and Augustine viewed cult as a marker of ethnicity, and this framework shaped their understanding of the Jewish and Gentile dynamics within early Christianity. By critically analyzing these perspectives, the paper seeks to reconstruct Paul's historical mission and challenges the notion of a 'Lawfree mission' ascribed to him by contemporary scholars, suggesting a more nuanced understanding of his apostolic efforts. ...

This essay challenges that paradigm, and argues that the widest and most sustained Roman anti-Christian persecutions came AFTER the accession of Constantine. ...

‘The Persecution of Christians from Nero to Hadrian' By James Harrison

At one level, interest in the persecution of the early believers and their successors has never waned. The popular book of the English historian and martyrologist, John Foxe (1517–1587), has been in print and read continuously since its original 1568 publication. However, the provocative thesis of Moss, beyond the scope of this chapter to investigate, has grabbed the attention of the popular media and has posed the question anew regarding the motivations for the persecution of the early Christians, the extent of its occurrence under the Roman empire, and the veracity of the later Christian martyrological accounts. Moss argues that Christians “were very rarely the victims of imperial persecution.” In many respects, Moss has revived the famous critique of the Christian persecutions by the Roman historian, Edward Gibbon (1737–1794). This book chapter explores the evidence for the persecution of the first believers from Nero until the reign of Hadrian. ...

Byzantine Religious Art and the Christian Church: An Historical Exploration Cultural Studies By Emeka C . Ekeke

https://www.academia.edu/82081308/Byzantine_Religious_Art_and_the_Christian_Church_An_Historical_Exploration_Cultural_Studies The establishment of the Byzantine Empire by Constantine the Great in AD 330 ushered a new dimension in the religious horizon of the early church. It created a new system of worship and the use of religious art in Christian religious activities. This religious art flourished in the empire until it degenerated into idolatry which led to serious controversy in the Eastern Church. This paper therefore examined the role Byzantine religious art played in the early church. It also considered the historical development of Byzantine art with particular reference to icons and mosaics and their characteristics and finally x-rayed the influence of icons and mosaics on the early church liturgy and theology. Keywords: Byzantine religious art; mosaics; icons; iconoclasm; early church; iconodules. ...

Persecution and Martyrdom of Christians in the Roman Empire from AD54 to 100: A Lesson for the 21ST Century Church By Emeka C . Ekeke

In some religions it is honored and given a prominent place and the martyrs seen as having gone to paradise. In others they go as far as killing themselves in their bid to be seen as martyrs and inherit a place of prominent in the world to come. This study examined persecutions and martyrdom among Christians in the Roman Empire between AD 54 and AD100. It traces the history of persecution of Christians from the time of Emperor Nero to Domitian. The paper also traces brief biography of some emperors and their achievements within the period. The paper concludes with a lesson for the 21 st century church. It recommends among others that Christians today should return to the kind of dogged faith that characterized the early Christians that made them grow in number and in strength. They should not resort to retaliation as has been the case in many instances but to turn vengeance to God if they are to be seen and known as Christians indeed. ...

Why martyrs were such a big deal in early Christianity By Matt Nash

Sittser Christians were persecuted throughout much of the Roman Empire's history, from the early 1 st century AD to the Edict of Milan in 313. As Christianity spread throughout the Empire, it came into ideological conflict with the pagan imperial cult and such practices as sacrifices to other gods and the deification of the emperors. Although persecution and martyrdom was sporadic and piecemeal, it was nonetheless widespread, because Christians as a movement were being persecuted. The causes of these persecutions continue to be investigated by scholars today. ...

The paper integrates both the archaeological evidence and the architectural analysis of the excavated structures, presenting a revised reconstruction of the area during the Nabataean and Roman periods. We will first discuss the spectacular refurbishing of the monumental stairs with white marble in the second c. AD, displaying a rather original design; we will then develop hypothesis and reconstruction drawing concerning the second construction, a luxury Nabataean two stories building. It was centred on a courtyard surrounded by a Doric portico, supporting a Corinthian gallery at the upper level, with screen walls adorned with colonette. Beside this sophisticated courtyard, the monumental gate of the building, with imbricated Nabataean and Corinthian orders, was studied, revealing two main successive construction stages. New perspectives are light out with those discoveries and enrich the debate about its function within the Qasr al-Bint complex. ...

Courts & The Crime: Creating A Christian Martyrdom By Brent Shaw

https://www.academia.edu/145451945/Courts_and_The_Crime_Creating_A_Christian_Martyrdom?email_work_card=abstract-read-more The hypothesis is that the emergence of martyrdom as a core concept of early Christianity was only partially created by the responses of leading Christian ideologues, mostly bishops, clerics, and 'freelancers,' who were themselves often wary of the practice and its consequences. In its original stages, martyrdom also owed a strong debt to values shared by large numbers of ordinary people. No doubt, these Christians interpreted attacks that the suffered by reflecting on sacred stories and meanings in them. But only in part. To shape an idea of Christian martyrdom, they also correlated these notions with ideals of heroic achievement in athletic contests, courage displayed in the circus and amphitheater, and the endurance shown by criminals under torture and punishment. These various ever-changing strands of action and thinking went into the progressive creation of a Christian martyrdom. In addition to inherited and developed sacred values, the social world of Roman courts and the punishments enacted in powerful venues of public execution and entertainment were also a critical component in the forming of the idea. ...

RECENT DISCOVERIES IN CITY CENTER OF PETRA, JORDAN: A PRELIMINARY EXCAVATION REPORT By Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry (MAA)

https://www.academia.edu/39944999/RECENT_DISCOVERIES_IN_CITY_CENTER_OF_PETRA_JORDAN_A_PRELIMINARY_EXCAVATION_REPORT?nav_from=3b97fba1-a4d6-46de-83b6-a82e6d978310 Despite previous and continued excavations at Petra, many questions regarding the city center are still ambiguous for the archaeologists. The ruins on the side of the valley raised many questions about the nature, the function and the dating of these structures. For these reasons an excavation has been conducted at this site. The excavation uncovered an important public building which contained a public bath, used in the Nabataean, Roman and Byzantine periods, an apse and, in front of it, a platform and a structure with marble floor. The connection among these structures is not completely clear. Further investigation and analyses is required. ...

(2019) ICHAJ 14 - On the steps of the Qasr al-Bint: New architectural study on the temple area (Petra) By Fournet Thibaud and François Renel

https://www.academia.edu/38277342/_2019_ICHAJ_14_On_the_steps_of_the_Qasr_al_Bint_New_architectural_study_on_the_temple_area_Petra_?nav_from=fd19d1b3-ae84-4436-9fda-15680451cec8 The works carried out since 1999 by the French archaeological mission in Petra on the temenos of the Qasr al-Bint were complemented by a renew architectural analysis, allowed by the excavation of a peristyle building, located east of the temple (1999-2014), and the exposure of the monumental staircase of the temple itself (2015-2018). New perspectives are light out with those discoveries and enrich the debate about its function within the Qasr al-Bint complex. ...

Jahrhunderts By Jakob Tanner

Against the background of the transformations of global capitalism, this paper analyzes the development of the "national business model" based on a strong currency, a low tax burden and banking secrecy, with which Switzerland has risen since World War I to become a hub of capital movements and a haven for international capital flight. The weakness and difficulties of a left critique of capitalist growth policies in Switzerland are addressed, and some reflections on the prospects for a radical reform policy are offered. ...

Ephesus and the Amazons Remembering or Recreating the Early History of a Greek Polis in the 5th Century BC By Helene Blinkenberg Hastrup

https://www.academia.edu/35609035/Ephesus_and_the_Amazons_Remembering_or_Recreating_the_Early_History_of_a_Greek_Polis_in_the_5th_Century_BC This essay examines the "Amazon monument of Ephesus", because the “meaning” of prominent freestanding Greek monuments was often more explicit than the “meaning” of architectural sculpture. If we want to understand the ancient cityscapes we need to take these monuments into account and rekindle the interest in Roman copies of Greek monuments; not so much as evidence of Greek sculptural style but of the Greek visual landscape. Observations of the ultra-hot super-Earth TOI-561 b suggest that the exoplanet is surrounded by a thick blanket of gases above a global magma ocean. The results help explain the planet’s unusually low density and challenge the prevailing wisdom that relatively small planets so close to their stars are not able to sustain atmospheres.

In one month of observations spread across two years, the survey will unveil tens of billions of stars and explore previously uncharted structures. “The Galactic Plane Survey will revolutionize our understanding of the Milky Way,” said Julie McEnery, Roman’s senior project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “We’ll be able to explore the mysterious far side of our galaxy and its star-studded heart. Because of the survey’s breadth and depth, it will be a scientific mother lode.” The survey will cover nearly 700 square degrees along the glowing band of the Milky Way—our edge-on view of the disk-shaped structure containing most of our galaxy’s stars, gas, and dust. Scientists expect the survey to map up to 20 billion stars and detect tiny shifts in their positions with repeated high-resolution observations, and it will only take 29 days spread over the course of the mission’s first two years.

Two major historiographical lines converge in this exemplary work. The first relates to the reign of Philip III, one of the major protagonists in the renewal of studies on the Spanish monarchy over the last three decades. The second is devoted to Hispanic Portugal (1580-1640) in general and the Portuguese overseas territories in particular, another innovative line of research that has run parallel to the former. This process had yet to cover the Brazilian chapter, until recently mistakenly perceived as an area outside, or almost outside, the America of the Habsburgs. ...

HABITAR LAS CORPORALIDADES. CLAVES PARA TRASCENDER LA VULNERACIÓN By Carolina Irene Márquez Méndez

- I explore some of the ways in which the colonial legacy inhabits us through our relationship with our habitat, in this exercise of transcending it. Through the body, I have been able to construct a heartfelt reflection linked to genealogical and ethnographic experiences in urban, peripheral, and rural areas, where armed conflict occurs constantly or intermittently. Therefore, the purpose of this reflection is to broaden the conditions for developing our capacity to freely determine ourselves. As a student of these communities, I recognize their capacity for sustenance and enjoyment, where the way of life maintains a meaning deeply intertwined with extended corporealities (Márquez Méndez, 2016): bodies of water, the land and its fruits, the territory and its topography, fungi and the connections of the mycelium, the diversity of flora and fauna that, together with human plurality, make up the ecosystem. The body is where it is possible to appreciate the power of life, its resistance to devastation, and its orientation toward sustaining care. We can also account for its reverse side, when life is exposed to harm, through different material and symbolic modes of violation and multiple violence. ...
