Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin: 5 essential books Natalya Kochetkova Jan 27 2026 Culture

https://www.gw2ru.com/arts/244202-mikhail-saltykov-shchedrin-5-essential-books For a long time, the name of this Russian classic writer didn't exist. It only appeared after its owner's death. There were two people. One was the successful statesman Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov, vice governor of the Ryazan and Tver provinces and chairman of the treasury chamber (Penza, Tula). The second was Nikolai Shchedrin, the fake name behind which Saltykov hid as a satirical writer. This duality became a key feature of his biography: as a high-ranking official, Saltykov studied the state system from the inside, while Shchedrin criticized it as a writer and journalist. Many of his works remain relevant today; we highlight five of his main ones below.

Geschichte und Kritik des ‘Bodenmarktes’ in der Schweiz By Jakob Tanner

https://www.academia.edu/92206514/Geschichte_und_Kritik_des_Bodenmarktes_in_der_Schweiz?email_work_card=title The article highlights how land in Switzerland has been integrated into market-price mechanisms since the 18th century. Since land is a "fictitious commodity" (Karl Polanyi), this commodification and commercialization was politically hard-fought, which is shown by numerous examples. Especially in spatial and land-use planning issues, semi-direct democracy repeatedly proved to be over-braked, limiting political decision-making opportunities. From a historical perspective, the article develops suggestions on how the market and private property could be put in check in land policy disputes. ...

It argues that these judgments are shaped more by contemporary expectations than by historical realities. Greek diplomacy, characterized by public discourse, collective decisionmaking, and the absence of professional diplomats, was uniquely suited to the decentralized, city-state structure of the Hellenic world. Contrary to the centralized and ceremonial diplomacy of ancient empires like Egypt or Persia, Greek diplomacy emphasized persuasion over protocol. It highlights the paradox that a politically sophisticated civilization could develop an ‘amateur’ diplomacy. Finally, it suggests that the emergence of New Diplomacy in the 21st century—plural, open, and participatory—makes the Greek model newly relevant. ...

The publication of Joseph Azize's Gurdjieff: Mysticism, Contemplation, Exercises (2020) opened the topic of religious and esoteric transformative experience which formerly reticent Gurdjieff groups were reluctant to share with non-members. It is clear that these exercises are directed toward growing an astral or kesdjan body, and the selection published and discussed by Azize is far from comprehensive. In the twenty-first century Work teachers utilize the internet (blogs, YouTube, and social media platforms, for example) to instruct pupils, and the methods for soul-growing are emerging more clearly (practicing the Movements, reading Gurdjieff's texts as lectio divina, listening to the music composed with Thomas de Hartmann, and doing the spiritual exercises). My research examines esoteric transformation in the Work from the perspective of aesthetics and ethics, querying the purpose of soul acquisition. ...

Carole M. Cusack, Modern Myth-Making and the Reinvention of Tradition: From Ancient Gods to Contemporary Esotericism By Carole Cusack

https://www.academia.edu/164713355/Carole_M_Cusack_Modern_Myth_Making_and_the_Reinvention_of_Tradition_From_Ancient_Gods_to_Contemporary_Esotericism?email_work_card=title In the twenty-first century West the religious and spiritual landscape is characterised by secularization, individualism, and consumerism. The institutional dominance formerly enjoyed by Christian churches has receded, and multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-faith nations are the norm. Christianity has adapted to wider social trends (Pentecostalism is materialistic, ‘hip’, and engaged with popular culture) and the religious ‘nones’ increase with every census. A numerically small but significant group join new religions (Scientology, ISKCON), and a smaller but more experimental group participate in personal spiritualities, invented religions (based on fictions and announce their status as human creations), and esoteric organisations. Religious creativity now involves mash-ups of mythologies (Greek, Norse, Celtic, and so on) and older religious forms with popular culture (novels, television series, films and online games). Reason and science, as promoted by the Enlightenment, are sidelined and ‘alternative rationalities’ emerge, which meet affective human needs. Modern myth-making is expressed through fandoms and cosplay, new rituals and social practices, and involves subjective forms of cultural memory, elective affinity in creating individual and communal identity, and the location of the sacred in nontraditional sites (gyms and cinemas, stadiums and shopping malls, and the online realm, for example). This lecture discusses the symbols and narratives that are emerging in this space. ...

However, not enough attention has been paid to the way in which Atys is killed, during a boar hunt, which is the key element and climax of the drama. The origin, purpose and complexity of Herodotus' narrative – which is not a simple novella, but an interweaving of (Lydian) history, myth and ritual – can be better understood if we also acknowledge the influence of the Homeric epic and the symbolic and initiatory charge that the practice of boar hunting had in the Greek literary tradition. Keywords: Herodotus, boar-hunting, Lydia, Croesus, Atys, hunting rituals, Homer. ...

Fish, volcanoes and the art of brains: review of John Onians European Art: A Neuroarthistory By Matthew Rampley

https://www.academia.edu/29398064/Fish_volcanoes_and_the_art_of_brains_review_of_John_Onians_European_Art_A_Neuroarthistory What bearing should considerations of human nature have on the study of art? Many might disagree with the basic premise of this question. There is no such thing as 'human nature,' they might state, for we are shaped by multiple social, cultural and linguistic determinations. This rules out the very possibility of talking about human nature in the first place. As Hannah Arendt suggested in a much discussed argument, when stripped of the 'external' predicates of culture and society, what is revealed is not the essence of human being, but something that is hardly human at all, what Giorgio Agamben has since referred to as 'bare life.' 1 Yet the matter is not so easily resolved. Arendt and other promoters of constructionist theories of the self are, after all, offering a thesis about human nature (that it is socially constructed). Moreover, there are many aspects of human being that would hardly be disputed. We are the outcome, it is generally agreed, of biological evolution. The details may remain areas for disagreement and refinement, but the consensus is that our biological character is the result of the processes of natural and sexual selection, that we are endowed with characteristics that conferred some kind of competitive advantage. The disappearance of Neanderthal humanoids, for example, is usually attributed to the fact that they were unable to complete with modern humans for resources, once the latter, with superior cognitive powers and forms of social organization, started encroaching on the same European territory. With the exception of a small number of modern day Cartesians, it is also widely accepted that human mental activity is intimately connected with human physiology. Cognition does not operate somewhere outside of the body. Analysis of the relation between brain functions and mental activity has thrown up remarkable findings; correlations between the two enable scientists to localize a wide range of cognitive functions in the brain. ...

The End of Cuneiform Writing in Uruk, Late Babylonian Astronomy, and the "Phoenix Cycle" By Eckart Frahm

It is tentatively suggested that a cryptic allusion to a 654-year cycle in TU 11 is not concerned with the reappearance of the Phoenix bird, as has been posited, but may rather refer to the simultaneous occurrence of a comet, rain, floods, and an earthquake in some apocalyptic remote future. ...

Anon, Society Events By Carole Cusack

https://www.academia.edu/164640618/Anon_Society_Events?email_work_card=title Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Sydney, Carole Cusack delivered an insightful, yet entertaining lecture highlighting the similarities and differences between two of Wagner's most pivotal and medieval chronicles. The Flying Dutchman (1843) and Parsifal (1882) are united by characters who are doomed to wander the earth as penance for unexpurgated sin (a blasphemous oath by the Dutchman, and Kundry's laughter at Christ on the cross). Both are identified with the the Wandering Jew of Christian folklore, who mocked the crucified Jesus and was doomed to deathless wandering. Both are saved by Christ figures; Senta sacrifices herself to break the curse that binds the Dutchman, and Parsifal baptises Kundry, who dies a saved Christian. ...

Thesen und Überlegungen zu einer transnationalen Geschichte der Schweiz By Jakob Tanner

https://www.academia.edu/44048381/Thesen_und_%C3%9Cberlegungen_zu_einer_transnationalen_Geschichte_der_Schweiz?email_work_card=title Transnational history is a perspective that allows a new understanding of the emergence, consolidation, and the many challenges of nation states, defining them as a product of interactions across boundaries and as an effect of transcultural exchange. Such an entangled history must meet three expectations: Frist, it is necessary to develop an adequate understanding of the dynamics of historical change. Transnational historiography must not be limited to economic and cultural transfers but must consider the interdependent transformation of nation states in the course of their mutual intertwining. Secondly, such an approach must promote a new research practice that combines international mobility and networking and widens the source base beyond national borders. Thirdly, a transnational history requires a complex tram model that makes it possible to overcome rigid epochal boundaries so that the period under study is extended back behind the formation of the nation state. ...

Medievalism and Apocalypticism in Richard Wagner’s Der Ring der Nibelungen By Carole Cusack

https://www.academia.edu/128699710/Medievalism_and_Apocalypticism_in_Richard_Wagner_s_Der_Ring_der_Nibelungen?email_work_card=title Richard Wagner (1813-1883) wrote thirteen complete operas, including the four that comprised Der Ring des Nibelungen (1876). Overwhelmingly, the operas were based on medieval sources (Tristan und Isolde, Parsifal, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung, Rienzi), with two dating to the sixteenth century (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Das Liebesverbot), with only two based on later sources (Der Fliegende Holländer and Die Feen). While medievalism infuses Wagner’s oeuvre, only the Ring Cycle and (arguably) Parsifal are apocalyptic. The Ring traces the triumph and downfall of the gods and is an example of “mythic medievalism” (Eichner 2020). Wagner thought history was a narrative of decline and that an apocalyptic event could transform society, but his youthful hopes for revolution were dashed. The Ring’s world is spoiled by Alberich’s theft of the gold, Mime’s creation of the ring and tarnhelm, and Wotan’s theft of the magical objects. In this paper I discuss the varied apocalypses that can be realized in productions of the Ring, and the how the impact or success of the production reduces or enhances the medievalism of Wagner’s operatic cycle. ...

https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202602/16/WS69926afaa310d6866eb3970b.html Originating in the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Yangliuqing New Year painting is a core northern woodblock printing tradition with nearly 400 years of history. Its subjects include door gods, folk life, folk opera characters, classical stories, and floral and landscape motifs, reflecting both reality and ideals. The production process — outline, carving, printing, and painting — is intricate and highly standardized, earning it the reputation of "China's premier New Year painting". Listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2006, the craft now extends beyond paper, appearing in city marathons, international summits, interactive exhibits, and crossovers with cultural products, games, and beverage packaging, bringing traditional artistry to contemporary life.

Heroes and Villains: Politics and Historical Memory in Late Medieval East Europe The Case Study of the Land of Navahrudak By Kananovich Uladzimir

https://www.academia.edu/49416597/Heroes_and_Villains_Politics_and_Historical_Memory_in_Late_Medieval_East_Europe_The_Case_Study_of_the_Land_of_Navahrudak?rhid=37874368788&swp=rr-rw-wc-164504012&nav_from=cc7d5f42-6072-401b-9d56-15d069a77b6c The paper examines the process of forging a new historical memory in a particular area of the late medieval and early modern Eastern Europe. Because of contemporary intellectual controversy in present-day Lithuania and Belarus over its role in the early Grand Duchy of Lithuania, I have chosen for the study the historical land of Navahrudak. In order to elucidate the role of Navahrudak in the past, I have tried to investigate what a ruling class in Navahrudak did really remember of its past, as well as what was forgotten and why, in the specific conditions of the early sixteenth-century of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. First of all, by utilizing primarily such historical evidence as chronicles and by focusing mainly on the memories of dukes who had ruled in the region, I tried to understand the process of how the region's historical memory was being forged. My research clearly reveals that most of what we actually know about Navahrudak's past appears as nothing else as the sixteenth-century construction, initiated primarily by the contemporary Lithuanian chancellor Albertus Gastoldus and forged by a remarkable team of Renaissance intellectuals employed in the grand ducal chancellery. Their vision of the region's past was greatly influenced by the actual political, social and even personal (familial) considerations and was clearly aimed at glorifying Navahrudak's past, by highlighting especially Navahrudak as Lithuania's first political center, where Albertus Gastoldus had began his political career and where also the political and economical interests of his kin were located. ...

Richard Wagner's Medieval Visions By Barbara Eichner

https://www.academia.edu/47759495/Richard_Wagners_Medieval_Visions?rhid=37874433227&swp=rr-rw-wc-128699710&nav_from=89a6f246-95e2-4070-9541-0037a7aeddf8 This chapter focuses on three aspects of Wagner’s medievalism: the historic medievalism of "Tannhäuser" and "Lohengrin", set in a recognizable historical framework but also invoking the aura of the Middle Ages through marvel and miracle; the mythical medievalism of the Ring cycle where Nordic myth displaces the more familiar sphere of the medieval "Nibelungenlied"; and finally the civic medievalism of "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" where a medieval city is imagined in a way that glosses nineteenth-century issues of German patriotism, nationhood, and the relationship of the creative individual with the community of the people. Instead of focusing on Wagner’s relationship with and adaptation of his medieval sources, this essay will examine the kind of Middle Ages he created. ...

Medievalism and Apocalypticism in Richard Wagner’s Der Ring der Nibelungen By Carole Cusack

https://www.academia.edu/128699710/Medievalism_and_Apocalypticism_in_Richard_Wagner_s_Der_Ring_der_Nibelungen Richard Wagner (1813-1883) wrote thirteen complete operas, including the four that comprised Der Ring des Nibelungen (1876). In this paper I discuss the varied apocalypses that can be realized in productions of the Ring, and the how the impact or success of the production reduces or enhances the medievalism of Wagner’s operatic cycle. ...

Richard Wagner’s ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’: Medieval, Pagan, Modern By Carole Cusack

https://www.academia.edu/1818367/Richard_Wagner_s_Der_Ring_des_Nibelungen_Medieval_Pagan_Modern ""Wagner’s epic operatic tetralogy ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’ welds sources from Scandinavian mythology (the Poetic Edda, Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda), Icelandic sagas (Volsunga Saga, Thidreks Saga), Middle High German epic (The Nibelungenlied), and early modern ballads (Das Lied vom hurnen Seyfrid). Wagner’s ‘Ring’ utilises narrative and thematic concerns from these medieval sources: relationships between gods, giants, dwarfs and humans; hero figures such as Siegmund and Siegfried; oaths, honour and the struggle between love and duty; fate and the destruction of the gods. There is evidence that the poems of the Poetic Edda may have been performed, and when Wagner’s realisation is compared to more thoroughgoing ‘medieval’ treatments of the tale (for example, music ensemble Sequentia’s The Rheingold Curse, 2001), the extent of his innovation and modernisation of the tale becomes apparent (particularly in his portrayal of the tragic deity Wotan and his daughter, the heroic Valkyrie Brunnhilde). ‘The Ring’ also demonstrates the ways that mythology continues to speak to contemporary, technological, post-Christian and (in some senses) post-modern audiences. Myth, as Brisson asserts, is a ‘testimony to a stage of development of the human mind, its discursive organization, and even its logic,’ and in ‘The Ring’ Wagner modernized ancient sources in a manner relevant to his nineteenth century audiences. Successive stagings of the operas have updated this message, and communicate the myth anew to fresh audiences (as in the case of the much criticised 1976 Bayreuth staging by Patrice Chereau, with the Rhine Maidens by a gigantic dam, and the stage set dominated by a huge hydro-electric power station). Finally, Wagner’s cycle can be understood as an example both of secularisation and the death of God, and of re-echantment and the rebirth of the gods, through its status as a polyvalent work of art, which can be interpreted in multiple, contradictory ways. It is a paradigmatic example of secularisation, as the gods of Valhalla give way to the dominance of humanity, symbolized by Siegfried and Brunnhilde. Yet the shifting meaning of texts such as the medieval Eddas, initially containing the stuff of ritual and religion, and later coming to be valued as art and history, rather than for their theological content is fascinating to chart. ‘The Ring’ is an example of re-enchantment in that its performance caused the gods of Germanic myth to live on stage and to inspire modern Pagans, who revived their worship at approximately the same time that ‘The Ring’ first dazzled audiences, at Bayreuth in 1876. The medieval aesthetics of subsequent productions, and the mythic and archetypal significance that the cycle has acquired, along with the ritual dimensions of attending performances of ‘The Ring’ the world over, make it one of the most significant sites of aesthetic medievalism and paganism in modern culture. This paper draws on field research conducted at performances of Wagner’s ‘Ring’ cycle in Australia, Europe and the United States since 2004, and on insights from modern Heathens and Asatruar who approach ‘The Ring’ as a powerful representation of the deities and cosmology of their Pagan religion."" ...

Naming and the Making of Historical Memory: the Politics of Princely Sobriquets in the Wallachian Chancery of the Sixteenth Century By Marian Coman

https://www.academia.edu/164504012/Naming_and_the_Making_of_Historical_Memory_the_Politics_of_Princely_Sobriquets_in_the_Wallachian_Chancery_of_the_Sixteenth_Century?email_work_card=title The present study is the first systematic attempt to explore the Wallachian chancery’s knowledge of the past and memorializing strategies, focusing on the princely sobriquets documented up to the end of the sixteenth century. My main contention is that the first historians of Wallachia were, in fact, the chancery scribes, even though they did not claim to write historical texts as such. Modern historians have rightly pointed out the intertextuality of medieval diplomas, as nearly every novel document of this kind referred to the prior acts of predecessors, thus contributing to a constant reshaping of the past. This way, diplomas served as a kind of memorials of former rulers and the sobriquets ascribed to them can be viewed as a rudimentary form of writing history. ...
