Painted circa 1840-50, this extensive panorama is from the Beyazıt Tower - the fire-watching station built in 1828 on the site of Eski Saray, the palace first inhabited by Mehmet the Conqueror - looking south east over the Sultanahmet district of the city. The marble tower was commissioned by Sultan Mahmud II (1808-1839), who abolished the Janissary corps and founded the New Army, seen training in the foreground.
In the background can be seen the Haghia Sophia and Blue Mosques, and in the foreground, from left to right, the Mahmut Paşa Mosque, the Nuruosmaniye Mosque, and the Beyazit Mosque. Nestled between these three mosques are the domed roofs of the Grand Bazaar. To the far left is the Topkapi palace, and in the distance the Princes' Islands rise from the Sea of Marmara.
