Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, the third prime minister of India, and till date the only woman to have had held the position, is popularly considered as one of the most dynamic leaders India has seen. Daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, Gandhi occupied the central figure in the Indian National Congress and was known for her daunting spirit and grit. Although her tenure as the prime minister of India was riddled with controversy and did have political upheavals and setbacks, Gandhi was elected twice and held the post till she was assassinated on October 31, 1980.
