It is no secret that the Mongol advance into Western Asia brought sheer violence with them. In response to this violence, the contemporary Kurdish polities and groups in this period resorted to counterviolence, became refugees or stayed largely autonomous and tried to submit to the khan. Although the process and aftermath of their conquest varied significantly across different regions, all were profoundly transformed—a pattern now recognized as a common theme of the Mongol onslaught. In the Cambridge history on the Mongols (2023) the Kurds are only partially mentioned and appear as small contenders in the local political stage. Although this common theme has been researched quite well in the Iranian and Mongol studies, the impact of the Mongols on the Kurds and Kurdistan has received scant attention until recently. Therefore, this paper aims to answer the following question: How did Mongol rule affect the political and social dynamics of Kurdish polities and actors? Using the comparative historical approach, we will examine and compare the impact of Mongol rule on contemporary Kurdish-ruled polities, with focus on Ayyubid Sultanate and specifically the Hazaraspid emirate.
