This is partly due to the extensive lack of corresponding textual evidence until the later thirteenth century, but is caused especially by the assumption that traces of conversations about faith were to be found primarily in the genre of medieval dialogue of faith. The focus so far has been almost exclusively on independent dialogues of faith from the High and Late Middle Ages. Therefore, it has been overlooked that conceptualizations of the Muslim as a dialogue partner in dialogic and other narrative contexts have been developed since the twelfth century. In order to understand these drafts in an adequate manner, they not only have to be classified in their respective contexts of origin, but also have to be read with the contemporary understanding of imagination and fiction. Such a relecture of the Christian conversation of faith from the perspective of the fictional proves the literary dialogue to be a space for the discussion of everything unspoken or unthinkable. The dialogues, which are constantly being redesigned, develop an intellectual space for encounters between experiences of dialogue from the past and opportunities for discussion in the future, and prove to be a clever means of analyzing and overcoming a blatant religious gap in medieval Christianity.
