Primarily known as a genre and portrait painter, Richter gained renown for his sensual depictions of harems and odalisques. In the present work the coy exoticism of his female figures is replaced by a proud, masculine presence. The harem guard's defined musculature and powerful, forbidding stance adds variety and dimension within Richter's Orientalist repertoire.
