However, not enough attention has been paid to the way in which Atys is killed, during a boar hunt, which is the key element and climax of the drama. The origin, purpose and complexity of Herodotus' narrative – which is not a simple novella, but an interweaving of (Lydian) history, myth and ritual – can be better understood if we also acknowledge the influence of the Homeric epic and the symbolic and initiatory charge that the practice of boar hunting had in the Greek literary tradition.
