Although it was a secondary territory for the Spanish Monarchy, Portuguese America gradually gained in importance as the 17th century progressed. Trade in sugar, brazilwood and African slaves grew, yet it failed to generate the expected returns. The costs of defending such an extensive coastline were also substantial. When the Dutch set their sights on the prosperous towns and cities of north-eastern Brazil, the Habsburg monarchs had to work hard to defend and recover the occupied areas, which dealt a significant blow to the royal coffers and the prestige of the Monarchy.
