This work is a post-doctoral study, financed by the French Republic, the Swedish Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, the Sven and Dagmar Salén Foundation, and the Åke Wiberg Foundation. The publication has been financed by the Association française de l’Archéologie mérovingienne (AFAM). The volume discusses thirty-seven sword pommels and two scabbard sheaths within their archaeological, ideological, and runological context. The volume has the purpose of establishing the foundation for a French runological institute, Institut runologique de France, with its seat at the Musée d’Archéologie nationale at the Château Saint-Germain-en-Laye. By means of this post-doctoral work, the runological education of French archeologists has begun, so that they will in the future be able to publish their own runic heritage within a larger international framework of scientific research."" ...
