The movie faithfully restages not Homer but a nineteenth-century grand narrative of civilization and its fall. A month of reviews and a billion dollars later, and I'm the only one to have questioned the source and validity of this metanarrative. This post restates my case plainly, and then investigates the media machinery that has installed and sustained this understanding of the shape of history-the genre of "big history", rolled out by academics since the eighteenth century, and now a fundamental component of popular cultural ideologies. Again I flag the question that all the reviews and commentary keep burying: not why civilizations fall, but how any world holds together at all.
