We begin by analysing the papal letters also added to the codex – dating from the eleventh to early twelfth centuries – all of which concern legal disputes and privileges of the archbishop of Narbonne. We then present a transcription of the Chronicon excerpt and provide a detailed analysis of its content. This excerpt focuses entirely on the condemnation of Adoptionism – advocated by Archbishop Elipandus of Toledo and Bishop Felix of Urgell – at the Council of Frankfurt in 794. By situating this text within the context of the church of Narbonne’s subsequent conflicts and legal claims, this study argues that Narbonne’s retrospective engagement with this pivotal Carolingian event was likely motivated by contemporary concerns. Specifically, the late eleventh-century re-establishment of the cclesiastical province of Tarragona – which threatened Narbonne’s erstwhile rights over the Catalan dioceses south of the Pyrenees – likely prompted the archbishopric to bolster its position by appealing to historically grounded legal claims.
