Ice-locked research ship forced to head home

The German research ship that’s been deliberately stuck in Arctic sea ice since October will be forced to temporarily leave its post because of the pandemic. Travel restrictions and flight cancellations have disrupted crew exchanges on the Polarstern, part of the epic MOSAiC research expedition to study climate change in the Arctic. The ship will now travel to Svalbard, where it will swap scientists. Although the mission team hopes to refreeze the ship at the same spot after a three-week pause, the interruption will leave a hefty gap in the data set — and researchers might miss the crucial time when the springtime melt begins.
