Rafael Valladares, review of the book El Brasil de Felipe III (The Brazil of Philip III) by José Manuel Santos in Revista Complutense de Historia de América. Two major historiographical lines converge in this exemplary work. The first relates to the reign of Philip III, one of the major protagonists in the renewal of studies on the Spanish monarchy over the last three decades. The second is devoted to Hispanic Portugal (1580-1640) in general and the Portuguese overseas territories in particular, another innovative line of research that has run parallel to the former. This process had yet to cover the Brazilian chapter, until recently mistakenly perceived as an area outside, or almost outside, the America of the Habsburgs.
