Archaeology provides us with various indications of wine production in north-eastern Catalonia during the Roman period. In our study of this territory, as well as following a chronological order, we distinguish between three well differentiated areas: the coastal strip of Baix Empordà and La Selva, the hinterland of Empúries, and the inland counties. This allows us to make a distinction between two different rates of development. In the first area, where development was earlier and more intensive, we find facilities (presses, amphora workshops) that were at the peak of their use during the period of Augustus and the 1st century and were mainly used for winemaking and amphora manufacture. Inland, in the towns of Emporiae and Gerunda, the pace was different, later and less intensive, but with more continuity.
