Deathscapes of Dobrudja and Crimea: a comparative approach By Florin Curta

https://www.academia.edu/167690670/Deathscapes_of_Dobrudja_and_Crimea_a_comparative_approach?email_work_card=title The funeral landscapes of Dobrudja and Crimea during Late Antiquity have rarely, if ever, been compared to each other. Funerary chambers used as family vaults appear in both regions, but no chambers with painted crosses and inscriptions are known from 6th-century Crimea. Conversely, the abundant grave goods, especially weapons found in Crimean burial chambers have no parallels in Dobrudja. Moreover, rock-cut cists and secondary burials in prehistoric barrows do not appear in the region between the Black Sea and the Lower Danube. Catacombs like those discovered in Constanța do not appear in Crimea. Nor does the cemetery around the extramural basilica in Histria have any parallel in Crimea. While the funerary landscapes of Dobrudja and Crimea in the 6th century are marked by a thorough Christianization of mortuary practices, Dobrudja was much more open towards new trends and influences than Crimea. ... 2026, Годишник на Софийския университет "Св.
