The painting depicts the stand of Joseph Blok for the market in The Hague. The brothers Joseph and David Blok had a concept in the Hague antiquarian world, although David (1823-1904) circa 1880 in his bookshop and auction house swapped for a book stall in the Oudemanhuispoort in Amsterdam. Joseph (1832-1905) had a bookshop in the Prince Street in The Hague. Both were weekly with a book stall at Parliament Buildings, and Joseph sold on Monday and Friday also in the Market for Boterwaag.
Jozef Blok has been painted also by Vincent van Gogh in 1882.
