This provided the impulse for a new way of thinking about how humans interact with the environment, and established a strong link between culture, nature, and economic development. The choice was certainly induced by the inclusion of sustainability in heritage conservation and, furthermore, from the fact that in the same year, as one of the resulting documents of the United Nations Conference known as Earth Summit, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development introduced the concept of " sustainable development'.
