Sicily and Al-Andalus. Trade Relationships and Monetary Circulation in the Eleventh Century By Carolina Doménech-Belda

These Sicilian coins are Fāṭimid issues struck in Palermo’s mint when the island was no longer under direct Fāṭimid control but under the rule of the Kalbid dynasty. Unit dirham and dinar were the currency most used in the Fāṭimid Empire; however, most of these Sicilian coins are half- and quarter-dirham and quarter-dinar fractions. This paper analyses the impact of this foreign currency in al-Andalus, its integration into the Andalusian monetary circulation, and the intensity of this phenomenon, which varies from one area to another.
