Budapest–Eszék–Zágráb–Pécs, 331–344 This study presents an unexpectedly discovered source, the unknown memorandum of János Marnavics Tomkó, well known in Croatian and Hungarian historiography, on the reestablishment of the Illyrian College (1624). The document is kept in Florence, in the Magalotti Archives, in a volume containing documents related to the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. Cardinal Lorenzo Magalotti was a trusted associate of Pope Urban VIII. He was papal secretary of state between 1623 and 1628, and was also a member of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide. It was in this capacity that he received Mrnavić’s memorandum on the reestablishment of the Illyrian College in Loreto. Founded in 1580, the Illyrian College in Loreto moved to Rome in 1593, where it operated under increasingly difficult conditions. Due to serious problems, the congregation decided in 1624 to relocate the college to the Adriatic coast. In addition to Loreto, the university town of Fermo was also seriously considered as a location. In his proposal, Mrnavić supported the Loreto site and placing the college under Jesuit leadership, and emphasized that, in addition to students from Dalmatia, priests should also be trained for the Ottoman Empire. The college was essentially re-established in 1627 by Pope Urban VIII in accordance with Mrnavić’s proposal. Thus, the petition serves as an important addition to the history of an institution that played a key role in Croatian and Balkan Catholic culture. ...
