New correspondence and other source material reveal how Stopes's image was constructed as "the first philosopher of contraception." The publication of Married Love: A New Contribution to the Solution of Sex Difficulties in 1918 made Stopes an influential adviser on sexual matters, but reactions to the book varied and some questioned the author's medical qualifications. In 1923 she published a work on contraception, and it is possible to analyze the way she constructed the book for success and prestige. Attacks on her writing by the medical profession made her determined that her work should appear "scientific," and this shift can be traced in its development. Her appeal was that of a populist and a writer of best-sellers, and she achieved this by casting herself as a professional.
