It examines the settlement pattern of the island, the architectural character of its settlements, cemeteries and burial customs, pottery production, socio-economic structures, and Thera's relations with the surrounding Aegean world. The research is based primarily on the results of rescue excavations carried out in two caldera quarries, which yielded material dating to the Early Cycladic III and early Middle Cycladic periods: the Chiotopoulos quarry at Ftellos and the Karayorgis quarry at Aghios Ioannis Eleemon. The former revealed a settlement with subterranean structures, while the latter brought to light a cemetery with rock-cut chamber tombs. Reference is also made to evidence relating to these periods from the excavations at Akrotiri. Additional information is derived from a number of Theran vessels of these periods recovered through chance finds, whose precise archaeological provenance remains unknown. ...
