NASA Study Finds Near-Earth Asteroid Is Actually Comet

https://www.nasa.gov/solar-system/comets/nasa-study-finds-near-earth-asteroid-is-actually-comet/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=nn202628 New research led by scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California has revealed the true identity of a puzzling near-Earth object by precisely tracking its motion through space. The mystery began on Aug. 28, 2025, when the object—known as asteroid 1998 SH2—passed safely within 2 million miles of our planet during its four-and-a-half-year orbit around the Sun. But when 1998 SH2 failed to appear where scientists expected, it became clear that something unanticipated had been influencing the object’s motion.
