https://www.academia.edu/176116457/Symposium_40_ans_apr%C3%A8s_la_Charte_d_Ottawa_des_d%C3%A9terminants_sociaux_%C3%A0_l_int%C3%A9gration_dans_le_soin?email_work_card=title Forty years after the adoption of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion in 1986, this symposium examines what has become of the integration of the social determinants of health into professional practices, healthcare delivery, public policies, and health education. The Charter contributed to broadening the understanding of health by emphasizing its social, economic, environmental, and political dimensions, while promoting equity, participation, and the reorientation of health services. Yet the notion of social determinants also raises a lasting tension within the social sciences. On the one hand, it has supported analyses of health inequalities rooted in structural social relations, including class, gender, and racialization. On the other, reducing social relations to measurable factors such as income, education, or housing risks turning structural inequalities into technical variables and policy indicators. The symposium therefore focuses on the institutional question raised by the Charter’s call to “reorient health services”: how do knowledge and concepts developed at the population and policy levels become operative in concrete situations, professional reasoning, clinical decision-making, and training? It brings together approaches from sociology, anthropology, history, political science, philosophy, law, economics, geography, healthcare, and education to examine processes of translation, appropriation, and transformation.
