Since 2024, the dissemination of electoral disinformation has been radically changed by the rapid emergence of affordable, easy-to-use generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can create believable-looking images, audio, and video of candidates and public figures saying or doing things that never actually happened. This paper draws upon recent academic research, government reports, and investigative reporting mostly from the past two years to explore the impact deepfakes and AI-generated disinformation pose to democratic processes as they enter the 2026 election cycle. The paper, based on case studies from the United States,
The Threat of Algorithmic Populism: Intelligence Strategies for Safeguarding Democracy Bogdan-George RADULESCU 2025, Intelligence Info

The digital age has facilitated unprecedented transformations in communication, reshaping the way political discourse and influence manifest in democratic societies. Among these transformations, algorithmic populism emerges as a significant phenomenon. This concept, defined by the interaction between political actors, online activism, and algorithm-driven amplification, highlights how extremist or populist political messages gain traction in the digital ecosystem. By analysing this dynamic through the lens of intelligence studies, we have tried to identify the risks posed by algorithmic populism to democratic systems and propose strategies to mitigate its impact. The need for intelligence agencies to address these risks is clear, as they represent not only political but also existential threats to the democratic order.
Algorithmic Politics: AI-Driven Governance, Digital Manipulation, and the Future of Democracy Dr-Godfrey Gandawa 2026, Interdisciplinary Journal of Arts, Politics and Law (IJAPL)

AI systems increasingly influence political communication, voter behaviour, and governance processes. Algorithmic curation, micro-targeting, automated propaganda, and predictive governance have transformed the conditions under which democratic will is formed and expressed. This foresighting paper examines the rise of algorithmic politics as a structural reconfiguration of democratic power, in which digital infrastructures, rather than formal institutions alone, shape political agency and public discourse. It analyses the risks posed to democratic integrity, transparency, and citizen autonomy by data-driven persuasion, platform-mediated public spheres, and anticipatory forms of governance. The paper argues that algorithmic politics cannot be treated as a mere technical development but must be understood as a constitutional challenge that demands new regulatory, ethical, and institutional responses. It proposes a governance framework that safeguards cognitive autonomy, informational integrity, and collective self-determination in an algorithm-mediated political environment.
AI and Cyber-Enabled Threats to Democracy through Algorithmic Manipulation and Generative AI in Undermining Democratic Integrity European Scientific Journal ESJ

The increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into digital platforms has escalated threats to democratic integrity worldwide, primarily through algorithmic manipulation, generative AI technologies, and large language models (LLMs). This study comprehensively investigates how these advanced technologies are systematically leveraged by state and non-state actors to destabilise democracies. The paper scrutinises empirical cases from the United States, European Union, India, Türkiye, Argentina, and Taiwan, analysing the operational mechanisms and socio-political implications of AIdriven disinformation. Findings demonstrate how generative AI, deepfake technologies, and sophisticated behavioural targeting exacerbate polarisation, weaken institutional trust, and distort electoral processes. Despite the growing prevalence of such cyber-enabled interference, regulatory and institutional responses remain fragmented and inadequate. Consequently, this research culminates in proposing a robust strategic implementation framework, emphasising platform transparency, regulatory innovation, technological safeguards, and civic resilience measures.

A silver plate from the Wyvern Collection depicting a Sasanian king hunting ostriches has posed identification problems. It has so far been dated to the 5th-6th centuries. On the basis of stylistic arguments, this paper suggests that it should be attributed to the 4th century and that the king should be identified with Shāpūr II (309-379), depicted in his minority and wearing the crown of his father Hormizd II (302-309). This would be the earliest Sasanian royal plate depicting a reigning ruler. The image was intended to overshadow the intrigues and machinations of the nobility for the succession of Hormizd II, and perhaps to symbolically represent the first military operations of the young Shāpūr II against the Arabs.
