Christa Zaat

Philip Alexius de László (Hungarian-born British painter) 1869 - 1937
Evening on the Edge of the Desert, Africa, s.d.
oil on canvasboard
33.1 x 40.7 cm. (13 x 16 in.)

Catalogue Note Christie's
De László regularly painted for his own pleasure during his annual vacations away from the English winter. On at least one occasion he was rebuked by his wife for packing too many canvasboards to take away with him. The present study is not dated but is similar to other landscape studies completed during the artist’s visits to Algeria in 1923, Egypt in 1929, and Morocco in 1934.

We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this landscape, which will be included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online:www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com
