Frank O. Salisbury (British painter and stained-glass designer) 1874 - 1962
The Fountain of Youth, ca. 1933
oil on canvas
64 x 49.5 in.
signed and inscribed "Cupid and Psyche at the Fountain of Eternal Youth"
The Maas Gallery, London, United Kingdom
Originally trained as a stained glass artist, Salisbury displayed natural talent for painting, and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools. He excelled at portraiture, for which he is best known now. Here, in a joyous departure from the exacting demands of portrait painting, Psyche, ensconced in rainbows, reaches into the fountain whilst Cupid kneels at her feet, collecting the precious droplets in a clay vessel. The picture was exhibited in 1933.
