One of the most important ritualsin Attic tragedy issupplication. In Soph- ocles, they are found in Ajax, Oedipus Tyrannos, Philoctetes, and Oedipus at Colo- nus. InAeschylus, supplication appears in each play of the Oresteia trilogy and one in the Seven Against Thebes. And there are supplications in every play of Euripides, including one named The Suppliant Women. This chapter starts by analysing the structure of supplication and then analyses how the dramatists exploited its dra- matic potential of supplication and used the ritualas a way of structuring both dra- matic time and dramatic space and itsideological importance.
