During his nearly four decades in power, Justinian’s armies campaigned widely— with mixed results in the East against the Persians, and more success in the West against the Vandals in North Africa, the Ostrogoths and Franks in Italy, and the Visigoths in Spain. This legacy of conquest and conflict had a lasting impact both during his reign and after his death. Across the Mediterranean and the Near East, powerful generals and military leaders played increasingly prominent roles in both military and civil society. Although much of the contemporary discourse on these military figures was rooted in traditional Graeco-Roman ideals of generalship, there were also many new developments. To explore these shifts, each chapter in this volume focuses on a specific general, whether Roman or non-Roman. This study takes a broader geographical and temporal perspective, comparing key generals to illuminate the social and political changes in the sixth-century Mediterranean world. ...
