How has it been possible to reason with Freud in support of both emancipatory and normalizing forms of modernity? Drawing on six cases studies, this issue compares their historical variants in order to reconstruct their transformations and shed light on the reversibility of this diagnosis of the times. Whether framed in terms of reception, circulation, transfer, or appropriation, studies of Freud have generally relied on a transmission model. While this perspective accounts for the international diffusion of psychoanalysis, it is less well equipped to explain how the same way of reasoning with Freud could support diagnoses of the times that were both emancipatory and normalizing. This special issue proposes to shift the analysis from the transmission of ideas to the transformation of ways of judging modernity. It advances the hypothesis that, in Freud, the articulation of the development of personality, civilization, and morality constitutes a generative mode of reasoning that makes possible divergent yet plausible reassignments. The variants observable in colonial, national, and postcolonial political conjunctures make it possible to reconstruct the intellectual transformations from Poland to New Zealand, through Madagascar, India, Brazil, and Korea.
