“The four Seasons” shows a cloister of a monastery, separating the inner- and the outer world. This contrast between inside and outside tells something about the life of the artist: he makes his painting in the inner world (his mind, but his studio as well) and when finished the painting goes to the outer world, (the gallery, a client) to be sold. For artists’ the state of mind it is important that these two worlds are strictly separated. The painting also shows the contrast between body (the sensual female figure) and soul (the ogives). And another contrast is given: between culture (the cloister) and nature (the wood and flowers). The wood, visible through the cloister, changes from autumn, via winter and spring, into summer. This cycle is repeated in the flowers that are kept by the female figure.
