The review of the RBSA exhibition in the Birmingham Post of 19th April 1886 said of Langley's painting:

Mr Walter Langley's little study 'The Fisher's Daughter', a young woman in a cliff garden, shading her eyes with her hand, as she peers out to sea in the direction of a fleet of fishing smacks, in charming in pose, colour and lighting, and vivid and realistic in effect'.
