Enjoying the child’s play

Those familiar with the work of Poen de Wijs are likely to have found the proverbial red thread - autobiographical elements - in his paintings. The canvases and panels reflect his life, and that is also the reason that every new collection is a surprise, for despite the clearly recognizable signature of the maker - the pursuit of perfection in his realism continues unabated – unexpected twists and turns on his path determine the subject. Time and again, the narrative visual language in his paintings take another form, and a new chapter in the comprehensive 'picture book' is added. Each scene is primarily a feast for the eyes, filled with distinctive characters, rich in detail and full of symbolism which are not revealed when first viewed, hidden by the layering. Many aspects of life are addressed as young and old, death and life, home and travel, heaven and earth, male and female, body and spirit, and of course love. For each play a role, and in the freedom of the painter’s mind they can cross the border of reality, detach themselves from their context and come together in new interactions.
In the collection 'CHILD’S PLAY' the page is turned to the chapter in which children play a major role. Free and uninhibited they enjoy the child’s play without having to worry about the existence, volatile as a chalk drawing in the rain. The jester in the iconographic form of the classic companion of love and youth, precedes the children in a parade of joy, play, music, and hope towards the future.
