Loin de rechercher l’exhaustivité, il adopte une démarche analytique qui présente la production historiographique par génération à partir des travaux fondateurs de Claude Nicolet et qui cherche à en définir les principales lignes directrices. S’il est illusoire de parler d’une historiographie française, il faut signaler dans le contexte français le poids de l’histoire sociale, le fréquent recours à la prosopographie comme instrument, l’attention portée à l’espace et l’intérêt de plus en plus grand pour l’étude des pratiques politiques. Pour ce qui est de la périodisation, Nicolet et ses élèves ont consacré la plupart de leurs travaux à la période tardo-républicaine, mais plusieurs livres importants ont été plus récemment publiés sur l’époque médio-républicaine et le Ve siècle av. J.-C. L’article se termine par un rapide état des lieux de la recherche sur la République romaine en Belgique. Abstract. This article aims to draw up an inventory of research on the Roman Republic in France. Far from claiming exhaustiveness, it adopts an analytical approach that presents the historiographical production by generation, starting with the foundational works of Claude Nicolet, and seeks to define its main strands of investigation. While it is illusory to speak of a French historiography, the French context necessitates signaling the weight of social history, the prevalence of the prosopographical method, the attention paid to spatial aspects, and the increasing interest in political practices. As regards periodization, Nicolet and his students were mostly concerned with the late republican period, whereas the last few decades spawned several important monographs dedicated to the Middle and Early Republic.
