Adolph Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel, as his full name after his nobilitation late in the 19th century was, is known mostly for the several hundred illustrations for books on and by Frederick the Great he made in the 1840s. In the 1850s he made a few paintings on themes of Frederick’s era, most famously the Flute Concert in Sanssouci, otherwise the bulk of his work is contemporary.
However, while working on his painting of the Coronation of Wilhelm I in the first half of the 1860s, he spent a lot of time in the armory in the Garde du Corps chamber in Berlin. The series Rüstkammer-Phantasien was one result of this time. This gouache on paper, known as Blindekuh (Blind Man’s Buff), is another one. It was auctioned in 2009 for €97,600
