Text: Den Haag dichtbij - January 14, 2013
Sunday, the The Hague artist Poen the Wijs was made a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. The decoration was presented by Jan Franssen, Queen's Commissioner in South Holland. The ceremony took place during a special performance, organized by the “Poen’s Friends”, because he stopped teaching fine art technique after about 40 years. All these years, as a teacher, he transferred his skill, knowledge and experience to many students at home and abroad. By teaching his specialty, the glazing techniques, he has ensured that it will remain, because not many people master this technique.
Poen de Wijs is also known as a painter and lithographer. During the past 40 years , many musicians, pantomimists, acrobats and other artists have been the subject of his paintings. His 'models' often became friends. His admiration for artists manifested in cooperations, for example with pantomimists Fred Delfgaauw and with Mini & Maxi. De Wijs became really famous when, in the late seventies, he made the record sleeves for Flairck.
De Wijs developed his own style of painting, in which he used the ancient, glazing techniques, which is painted layer over layer. Over the years he has exhibited in many countries and he has been on numerous art fairs and exhibitions. De Wijs also dedicated himself all his long career to various social causes.
