THE HOUSE OF CARDS
If anything invites interpretation, symbolism, the representation of metaphors, if anything calls forth imagination, it must be the card game. The traditional card game, which has countless versions, has links with Venice, with characters from the Commedia dell'Arte, with the theatre, the church and the carnival. A Garden of Eden to an imaginative painter such as Poen de Wijs. It was bound to happen that, after his visits to Venice, this beautiful city would become the background to his paintings. The queen of clubs or diamonds, the jack of spades and the joker meet in a scenery of old churches and palaces, where musicians, dancers, exotic children, animals and fortune-tellers play their part in a play of associations and metaphors.
