Tishani Doshi on her unhinged protagonist, motherhood and female gaze in Small Days And Nights
Tishani Doshi's Small Days and Nights is a searing tale of displacement, anguish, relationships hinged on tenterhooks and ultimately of an outsider who learns to live by making another survive.
In Tishani Doshi’s Small Days and Nights, Grace, the protagonist, comes to India after her mother’s death only to be told that she has an elder sister, afflicted with Down Syndrome. Grace’s reluctance towards motherhood has contributed in her crumbling marriage in the US. And yet, she chooses to stay back and take responsibility of her sister, Lucia, and in some ways, her own life. What follows is a searing tale of displacement, anguish, relationships hinged on tenterhooks and ultimately of an outsider who learns to live by making another survive.
