In the foreground Niels Juel's flagship "Christianus Quintus".
Mølsted has in several of his paintings depicted the battles of the famous Danish naval hero Niels Juel during the Skåne War (1675-79). Among others - as in the present work - the battle in Køge Bay in the summer of 1677, where Niels Juel defeated the Swedish fleet, which gave Denmark the absolute supremacy on the sea. In this work Mølsted depicts the beautiful quiet morning just before hell breaks loose.
